Ernest Manico born circa 1855 at Camberwell, London to Ernest Smith Manico and
Elizabeth Calley from Devon. He was a journalist and married Georgiana McLean circa
1879. Ernest was secretary of The Advertising Company Ltd, a company that delivered
circulars, orders etc established in 1885. Ernest Manico published the first edition ‘Irish
Society’ in January 1888 from his premises at Temple Lane, Dublin and moved to D’Olier
Street later that year. By 1893 he had another short lived publication called Figaro.
Ernest lived at Cherbury for a short time before moving to St Elmo Sutton by 1901. In
1902 a skeleton was found in the gardens of St Elmo. A libel case in 1913 brought by
Michael Nugent of the Dolphin Hotel in which Nannie Power O’Donohue aka ‘Candid
Jane’ is mentioned as editor of ‘Irish Society’. Ernest moved to the Colwyn Bay and
named the house St Elmo on Princes Drive. In 1922 in failing health, he went to stay with
his son in California. He returned in 1925 but the sea journey proved difficult and on
docking at Liverpool he was taken to Bootle Hospital. Ernest died 16 Jan 1925, his body
was repatriated and he was buried at Mount Jerome. Georgina died 24 Feb 1948 and
was buried with her husband.
1 Walter Manico eldest son born 15 Aug 1880 at 26 Manor Street, Dublin. He
served with Irish Imperial Yeomanry and as an officer with the Army Service Corps
from 1900. He died 3 Nov 1904 at the Richmond Hospital late of St Elmo, Sutton
and was buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Frank Ernest Manico born 16 Jun 1883 in Sheffield joined the Army. He married
Dorothy Collingwood Borradaile on 21 Dec 1911 at Saltburn. Dorothy was the
eldest daughter of Arthur Borradaile AMICE and the grand-daughter of Harry
Borradaile of the Indian Civil Service of Stokes Hall, Surrey and Rochester House,
Little Ealing. They were living at Church Hill House Church Lane, Haslemere in
1936 and at Northchapel, Chichester in 1942 where Frank was a member of the
local Fascist party and interned. Captain Frank a retired army captain died at the
Royal Hospital, Donnybrook on 21 Jun 1972 late of Swanbrook House,
Morehampton Road, Donnybrook.
3 William Alexander Manico born 24 Oct 1887 at Mount Pleasant Square was a
commercial clerk in 1911. He married Mabel Pearson from Howth Lodge on
4 Feb 1916 at Howth Parish Church. William died 19 Mar 1949 at Craigville, Howth.
1 Dorothy Katheen Manico (twin) born 26 May 1917 at Craigview, Howth
married Joseph Samuel de Beaulieu Bewley on 27 May 1943 at the Friend's
Meeting House on Eustace Street. Joseph was the son of Ernest Bewley, a tea
& coffee merchant.
2 Patricia Mabel Manico (twin) born 26 May 1917 at Craigview, Howth.
3 Phyllis Honor Manico born 16 Feb 1922 at Craig View, Howth married Herbert
George French McDowell of Warren Villa, Howth on 7 July 1943 at Howth
Parish Church. Herbert was the son of William McDowell.
4 Edward Victor Manico youngest son born 26 Jun 1892 at Borcethe in Bray was a
commercial clerk in 1911. He joined the Royal Irish Rifles and was wounded in July
1916. He emigrated to America in 1920.
