Nicholas Mahon Power married Margaret Emily Mahon

Nicholas Power elder son of Nicholas Power and Catherine Rivers of Ballinakill was born
circa 1787. He married Margaret Mahon on 06.03.1818 adding her surname to his upon
their marriage. Margaret was the only daughter and heir of Nicholas Mahon a wealthy
woollen merchant of Merchant's Quay, Dublin and his wife Margaret Mahon. Margaret
Emily brought with her a quarter of a million as a marriage portion. Nicholas purchased
Faithlegg a large country house with 150 acres in 1819. His mother Catherine lived with
them and died in March 1831 aged 76. A Roman Catholic, he was appointed High Sheriff
in 1838, later a DL and he represented the County of Waterford from 1847 to 1859.
Margaret's father died aged 95 at Marino in 1841 and her husband was her father's
executor and main beneficiary. Margaret moved out of Faithlegg and separated from
her husband by deed in 1860. Margaret was allowed to keep the jewellery bought by her
but it would remain the property of her husband. She was made an allowance of £1000
pa to be paid quarterly by her husband. Mary died in debt on 20.11.1866 at 62 Mountjoy
Square having pawned her jewellery to pay back loans. Nicholas died 04.02.1873 and was
thought to have been one of the wealthiest commoners in Ireland. He left 200K in
personal estate.

2 Patrick Joseph (Pat) Mahon Power born circa 1826 of Woodlands, Waterford
married Lady Olivia Nugent on 01.03.1859 daughter of Anthony Francis Nugent
the Earl of Westmeath. Pat was a hands-on landlord and did not employ a
steward to run the estate. Olivia, an invalid for many years died on 21.01.1903
aged 64 years at St Vincent’s Asylum, Dublin and was interred in the family vault
at Faithlegg. Patrick took a lease on Temple Hill House in Blackrock in 1875. This
would be used as a Dublin base for the family for the next 30 odd years. Patrick
died on 18.02.1913 aged 87 years at Faithlegg House.
1 Maud Anne Power eldest child born circa 18.02.1860 at Faithlegg House.
Maud wrote a journal of her travels entitled “Wayside India” in 1907. She
was living at Temple Hill House in 1911. Maud died unmarried on
10.10.1938 aged 77 years at 19 Alma Road, Monkstown and is buried at
Deansgrange with her sisters Ellen and Mary.
2 Hubert Power only son born circa 1863 married Marie Therese Aimee
Bourges born in France youngest daughter of M. Alexis Chas Toussaint
Bourges on 06.12.1888 at the Bavarian Chapel, Warwick Street, London.
The family were living at Lansdowne, Sidlands Vicarage Road in
Sidmouth in 1891. Marie died circa 1893. Herbert a widower was living
with his daughter Ellen in 1901 in Killiney and at Faithlegg in 1911.
Hubert died on 19.05.1920 aged 57 years at Faithlegg House. Informant
Ellen Gallwey daughter.
1 Ellen Marie Eugenie Power born circa 1890 in London. Eily married
Dayrell Gallwey of Tramore son of William Gallwey on 07.08.1914
at the Private Chapel of Faithlegg. Witnesses William A Burke and
Gwendoline Gallwey.
3 Ellen Mary Power born circa 1864 living at Faithlegg in 1901 and 1911.
Ellen died on 18.06.1939 at 96 Lower Leeson Street late Davidstown,
Kildare and is buried at Deansgrange with her sisters Maud and Mary.
4 Mary Emily Power born circa 1867 living at Faithlegg in 1901 and with
sister Maud in 1911 at Temple Hill House died unmarried on 03.05.1948
at Davidstown House and is buried at Deansgrange with her sisters Ellen
and Maud.
5 Katherine E Power born circa 1868 living at Faithlegg in 1901. Katherine
married Henry Joseph Gallwey son of Henry Gallwey on 20.08.1903 at the
University Church, Stephens Green. Witness Ellen Power and Michael
Hennessy. An expert horse woman, she was a follower of the hounds.
She was also a founder member of the Dunmore East Nursing Association.
Henry died on 27.06.1912 aged 61 years at Corballymore, Waterford.
Probate to William Gallwey and Hubert Power. Katherine died on
21.02.1938 aged 72 years at her residence Corballymore.
2 Margaret Emily Power born circa 1821. As eldest daughter and granddaughter of
the late Nicholas Mahon of Merchants Quay, she married Denis O’Conor eldest
son of Mathew O’Conor of Mount Druid, Roscommon and Mountjoy Square and
nephew of the late O’Conor Don on 29.05.1841 at Faithlegg House. His sister
Margaret O’Conor had married William Murphy of Mount Merrion the previous
year. Denis died 22.12.1862 at Seafield House, Monkstown late of Mount Druid,
Roscommon. Will proved by Margaret O’Conor widow. Margaret died on
20.08.1900 aged 77 years at Ballingare. Probate to Denis and Owen O’Conor.
1 Charles Mathew O’Conor eldest son born circa 1845 married Alice Hale
eldest daughter of James Hale of Templeview, Sligo after Easter 1894.
Charles, a widower died on 16.05.1917 aged 70 years at 14 Elgin Road,
Donnybrook.
1 Finola Margaret Martin O’Conor born 24.07.1895 at 77 Wellington
Road, Dublin baptised at Haddington Road. Finola died on
22.05.1912 aged 17 years in Rome, Italy.
2 Gertrude Mary O’Conor married Hon Charles Nugent of Flower Hill,
Galway, 3rd son of Anthony 9th Earl of Westmeath on 15.06.1876 at
St Patricks Church, Monkstown. Gertrude a widow died 28.06.1921
aged 71 years at Flowerhill.
3 Eva O’Conor born circa 1850 died on 20.06.1928 aged 78 years at 3
Cambridge Terrace.
4 Owen Denis O’Conor born 24.08.1851 of Ballinagare, Castlerea,
Roscommon died unmarried on 24.03.1906 aged 50 years at
Hermitage, Frenchpark, Roscommon.
5 Denis Albert O’Conor born 03.09.1853 a land agent was living with his
aunt Adelaide Blake at Temple Hill. He died unmarried on
26.05.1906 aged 48 years at Hermitage, Frenchpark, Roscommon.
3 Catherine Georgina Power 2nd daughter born circa 1823 married James Archbold
of Davidstown, Kildare on 07.03.1842 at her father’s residence. They lived at St
John's, Castledermot, Kildare. James died suddenly in 1854.
1 Robert F Archbald born 23.10.44 inheritated the Davidstown Estate.
4 Maria Louisa Power 3rd daughter married Finlay Chester JP of Stone House, Louth
on 19.05.1845 at Faithlegg House. Finlay died on 03.10.1891 aged 69 years at
Williamstown House, Castlebellingham. Maria died on 22.04.1899 aged 86 years at
Palermo, Killiney. Informant Ismay Walsh daughter.
1 Henry Chester died unmarried on 19.09.1899 aged 52 years at Williamstown.

2 Ismay Chester born circa 1857 married Richard Walter Walsh a Civil Engineer
of Alverno, Dalkey son of Richard Walsh on 25.10.1883 at the Catholic University
Church, Dublin. Ismay died on 20.01.1937 aged 80 years and Richard died on
03.03.1937 aged 94 years both at Williamstown House. Informant James
Chester Walsh.

6 Frances Emily Mary (Fanny) Power 4th daughter born circa 1831 moved to Temple Hill
House in 1875. She was a member of the RHS and won many awards for her exotic
flowers and rock plants. She opposed the council who wanted to removed the
entrance to Temple Hill House. She died a spinster on 03.04.1896 aged 65 years at
Temple Hill House, Blackrock. Funeral was at Faithlegg and she left 110K in personal
estate.
7 Albert William Power born circa 1832 and died unmarried on 28.03.1874 at Ballinakill.
Albert received an allowance of £400 a year from his father and had lodged with
Captain Power of Ballinakill for the last 9 years but had been ill for some time.
8 Adelaide Mary Josephine Isabella Power youngest daughter born circa 1833 married
John Aloysius Blake MP for Waterford on 07.05.1874. John died 22.05.1887 in London
and his wife Adelaide commissioned a stained glass window in Faithlegg Church to his
memory. She moved to Temple Hill House and continued to battle with the council who
wanted to remove the entrance to the house. Adelaide died on 18.02.1911 aged 78
years at Temple Hill House. She left 102K in personal estate. The entrance to Temple
Hill House was demolished in 1912 to widen and lower the road to accommodate trams.
