Richard MacGovern born 31 Mar 1877 at 6 South Richmond Street son of Thomas Richard MacGovern,
a portmanteau manufacturer and his wife Elizabeth Moran. He was living with his parents and six
siblings at Rathmines in 1901 and was working as a clerk in the cycle trade. He married Anne Ethel
Holmes on 30 Dec 1905 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Richard was a portmanteau manufacturer at the
time of his marriage. Anne was the daughter of Thompson Holmes, a merchant/butcher from England
and his wife Matilda Stanton. Anne was resident at Seafort House, Sandycove Avenue at the time of
her marriage. The family were living at Victoria Terrace, Kingstown in 1911. Richard was variously
described as a merchant, electrical contractor and builder.
1 Noel Richard MacGovern, born 25 Dec 1906 at 4 Martello Terrace, Kingstown. Noel was
educated at King’s Hospital and entered Trinity in 1925 having passed the entrance exam for
the Engineering Department. He was articled to William Albert Dixon and Joseph Vincent
Downes. He worked in Malaya and by 1929 was working for Pembroke Urban District
Council and the Board of Works. He later had a private practice at Merrion Square. He
married Violet Isobel Throwbridge on 19 Oct 1932 at the Methodist Church, Kingstown.
Violet was the daughter of Reuben Rose Throwbridge, a civil servant and was resident at 3
Howth Villas, Sandycove. Noel was an architect and worked for Dublin City Council and the
OPW. The family lived at Mount Salem in from 1959 to 1962 and later one of their sons
would live there. Noel advised on housing in the Somali Republic from 1962 to 1964 for the
United Nations. His main task was to help overcome a housing shortage for low-income
families. He became senior architect in the city architect's department when he returned in
July 1964. He suffered a heart attack whilst driving and died on 12 Aug 1967 in Westmeath.
His funeral service was held at St Brigid’s Church, Stillorgan and he was buried at
Deansgrange. Violet died 22 May 1971 at South Park, Foxrock and was buried with her
husband.
2 Aileen Olive MacGovern born circa 1907. Aileen married Maurice Steele Phillips on
18 Aug 1932 at the Mariners Church, Kingstown. Maurice was a commercial clerk and the
son of Herbert Phillips, a merchant tailor and was resident at 8 Idrone Terrace, Blackrock.
