Albert J Irwin MacDonagh born circa 1831 only son of Edward Mills MacDonagh of Elmpark
House, Roscommon. He graduated Trinity College, Dublin and took Holy orders. He
married Anne Ledwich of Monkstown eldest daughter of William Ledwich of Bushfield House
04.07.1861 at Monkstown Parish Church. They lived at Sydney Avenue before moving to St
Aubyn’s in 1877 where they lived for ten years. Albert was a Canon of St Patrick’s and later
rector of Chapelizod. Anna died 21.06.1888 at Donnybrook Retreat, Bloomfield late of
Sydney Avenue, Blackrock. Albert died 13.04.1889 at 10 Trinity College, Dublin late of 2
Sydney Avenue, Blackrock. He left 6K in personal estate. A brass book rest was installed in
Chapelizod Church in his memory.
1 Albert Augustus MacDonagh (MacDonogh) born 01.03.1866 at 4 Sydney Avenue.
Albert of Avoca School, Blackrock married Mary Ruth Fisher, 2nd surviving daughter
of the late George Fisher of Templeoran, Westmeath on 13.01.1899 at Monkstown
Parish Church. He opened a school in Blackrock in 1891, he then founded Avoca
School in Blackrock in 1892 and served for 43 years as its headmaster. The school
was based at Whitehall, Blackrock and merged with Kingstown Grammar School in
1968 to form Newpark Comprehensive School. Albert also at 1 Montpelier Place,
Blackrock died on 31.03.1934 at Kilrush, Broadstone, Dorset. Mary Ruth moved to
the Dargle Road in Bray and died 01.08.1965 at Sir Patrick Dun’s late of 47 Belgrave
Square, Monkstown and was buried at Deansgrange with her husband.
1 Ethel Mary Noel MacDonogh born 03.11.1899 at Whitehall, Blackrock. She
attended Alexandra College and took the Trinity exams in 1921.
2 William Irwin Patrick MacDonogh born 19.12.1902 at Whitehall, Blackrock
graduated Trinity. A keen cricketer, he played Hockey for Leinster and was
capped 29 times for Ireland. He also published a number of books of poetry.
including 'Flirtation'. He worked for Guinness’ and married Ellen May (Maisie)
Connell on 19 Aug 1931 at St John’s, Malone. Maisie was a mezzo-soprano.
They both frequently broadcast on Radio Éireann. Paddy suffered from
depression later in his life and died in tragic circumstances on 22.05.1961 at
Church Road, Malahide.
3 Ruth Isobel (Ida) MacDonogh born 27.11.1904 at Whitehall, Blackrock attended
Avoca School and won the Robert Perceval Graves scholarship in 1921. Ida was
a teacher at Avoca Scholl, her subjects History and French. She died unmarried
and was buried in Deansgrange with her parents.
4 Joyce Rosemary Lois MacDonogh born 30.06.1908 at Whitehall, Blackrock. She
married Percy Faullker at Monkstown Church on 01.09.1933. Percy was resident
at Hampstead, London and the son of Thomas Faulkner, a headmaster.
5 Edith Augusta MacDonogh born 28.08.1912 at Whitehall, Blackrock died a
infant on 01.09.1912 at Whitehall and was buried at Deansgrange.
6 Jack Albert Middleton MacDonogh born 10.05.1914 at Whitehall, Blackrock
graduated Trinity in 1935. He played cricket, and hockey for Leinster and Ireland.
He took Holy orders and was chaplain to Rugby School in Warwickshire and also
taught religion and modern languages. He married Barbara Kathleen Sullivan on
27 Apr 1943 at St Ann's, Dublin. Barbara was the daughter of Edward G Sullivan,
Archdeacon of Dublin. He was appointed Vicar of Twycross in 1972 and retired in
1979. Their son Stephen was the writer, poet, campaigner and proprietor of
Brandon Books.

buried at Deansgrange.

Whitehall, Blackrock and was buried at Deansgrange.

5 Eileen MacDonagh born 28.08.1873 at 14 Sydney Avenue, Backrock was living at 2
Sidney Avenue and married Charles Edward Hilary at St Bartholomew’s Church on
21.01.1896. Charles was resident at 39 Booterstown Avenue and the son of the Rev
Frances Hilary.
6 Mary Kathleen MacDonagh born 19.05.1878 at St Aubyn’s, Blackrock. Mary of
Whitehall, Blackrock married William Jeffrey Cosgrave of Killsallagh, Swords on
12.01.1899 at Christ Church, Carysfort, Blackrock. William was the son of Frederick
Cosgrave and Martha Bullen of Corrstown House, Killsallaghan, Swords. Kathleen
was living with her brother Albert and his family in 1901 at Carysfort Avenue. William
was an official with the South African Railway. He died 02.09.1915 the Glebelands,
Kilsallaghan late of Capetown, South Africa. Martha R Cosgrave his widowed mother
was granted probate.
*Gwendoline Cosgrave nee MacDonagh, the widow of Vincent Cosgrave of Portage La
Prairie, Canada, married Louis Augustus Gordon, on 17.10.1902 at All Saints, Margaret
Street, Marylebone. Her father is given as Albert Augustus MacDonagh, Canon of St
Patricks. However, Albert would have been only 13 at the time of her birth and was not
a clergyman let alone a canon of St Patricks. Louis was born in 1858 and was a Colonel
in the Indian Army. He was the son of Sir Henry William Gordon and the nephew of
Major General Charles George Gordon aka Chinese Gordon. By 1911 they were living
at Hill View Southwater, Horsham, Sussex and they had a daughter Rose. Both
Gwendoline and Louis give their place of birth as County Dublin. Louis died 17.01.1935
at Hove. In 1939 Gwendoline with an address of 22 Elvaston Place, North Kensington
gave her date of birth as 16.05.1879. Gwendoline was killed on 11.05.1941 at 22
Elvaston Place. She was one of the 1400 people killed that night during a Luftwaffe
bombing raid on London. The deaths records note her previous names as MacDonogh
and Cosgrave and her age of 71 which would be a birth year of 1869. Their daughter
Rose Gordon who was with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service
married Douglas Bell at Cairo, Egypt on 14.04.1942.
