Thomas Leland born 1722 son of Rev Dr John Leland (1692-1766) and Ann Shannon,
widow of the Rev Thomas Maquay. He was educated at Thomas Sheridan’s School
and at Trinity. He was an academic, priest and historian. He married Maria circa 1750
who died circa 1763. He was appointed senior fellow at Trinity College in 1761,
professor of history in 1761 and professor of oratory in 1763. He was an author and
published a novel ‘Longsword, Earl of Salisbury: An Historical Romance’, in 1762, ‘The
history of the Life and Reign of Philip King of Macedon, Father of Alexander’ in 1768.
He purchased the Annals of Lough Ce (Annals of Kilronan) in 1766 and deposited them
with Trinity College. He served as vicar in Bray, County Wicklow in 1773, of Ardstraw
in 1781 and St Anne’s Dublin in 1783. He wrote the ‘History of Ireland from the invasion
of Henry II’ published in 1783. He was painted by Sir Joshua and later it was produced
as a mezzotint by Henry Brocas. Thomas Leland died 22 August 1785 in Dublin and was
buried in St Ann's churchyard.
1 John Leland eldest son born circa 1757 entered TCD in 1773 admitted Kings
Inns in 1780. He was a barrister in Dublin and married Esther Roe. He died on
20 Dec 1829 at his residence 29 North Frederick Street. The following July, his
extensive library and the lease of the house were auctioned.
1 William Leland eldest son admitted Kings Inn in 1823 died in June 1826 at
North Frederick Street.
2 Henry Leland second son admitted Kings Inns in 1825.
2 Thomas Leland, solicitor of 16 French Street and later of 6 Fitzwilliam Street an
attorney Exchequer. He also acted for the Earl of Granard and was agent to
John Joseph Henry of Tipperary. He married Catherine Franks on 18 Jan 1794 (ML)
at St Peter’s, Dublin. In 1825 their house in Roebuck was broken into and three
gold rings, money and clothes were taken. Thomas died 2 Feb 1836 at his
residence in Roebuck. William Parsons Hoey of 25 Leeson Street was his sole
executor. The household furniture and plate were auctioned over 5 days and
included the painting of his late father by Sir Joshua Reynolds. His land and
house at Roebuck was put up for sale in 1841 by his executor and was
purchased by William Lewis. Catherine died at Woodville, Sandyford on
18 Jan 1846.
1 Catherine Leland eldest daughter married George Fosberry junior on
28 Nov 1829 at St Peter’s Dublin. George was the son of George Fosberry
of Curraghbridge, Co Limerick. Catherine died at the seat of her husband
in Kilgobbin on 3 Jan 1850 and was buried at the Fosberry vault at Adare.
2 Anne Leland died a spinster 26 Aug 1854 at Muckross Terrace, Bushfield
Avenue, Donnybrook.
