George Lefroy born circa 1823 in Ireland, fourth son of Captain Benjamin Leglois Lefroy of Cardenton
House, Co Kildare and his wife Katherine Tessier De La Nauze. He married Phoebe Buchannan
Baldwin, on 20 Oct 1857 at Toronto, Canada. Phoebe was the daughter of W A Baldwin of
Mathgnotch, Toronto and she was the niece of the Hon Robert Baldwin, CB. George was a farmer living
in Welland, Ontario. Phoebe died in 1891 and George died 30 Oct 1896. Both were buried at St James'
Cemetery, Toronto.
1 Catherine Isabella Lefroy eldest daughter and granddaughter of B L Lefroy born 18 Dec 1858 in
Ontario was in Devon living with her brother Benjamin in 1901. She died 24 May 1905 at
Derrycashel, Co Roscommon.
2 Ernest Baldwin Lefroy born 20 Feb 1861 at Castlemora Gore, Toronto circa 1862 in Ontario died
28 Apr 1927 and was buried at St James' Cemetery, Toronto.
3 Harold Baldwin Lefroy born 14 Jan 1863 in Ontario died 6 Jan 1928 and was buried at St James'
Cemetery, Toronto.
4 Phoebe Isabell Beatrice Lefroy youngest daughter born circa 1866 on Ontario died at Toronto
16 Jan 1957 aged 91.
5 Benjamin St George LeFroy born circa 1865 in Ontario, Canada son of George LeFroy was a
barrister. He is credited with introducing the Pitcher plant into Ireland. Sarracenia purpurea is a
carnivorous plant that has been found in important bog habitats where it now threatens native
plants. He was a member of The Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland and donated a slab of bog
butter found near Dunlavin, Co Kildare to the Museum of Ontario in 1898. Of Derrycashel, Clondra,
County Longford, he married Kathleen Grace Lefroy at St Peter’s Church, Boxted in Suffolk on
19 Jan 1910. Kathleen was born in 1884 in England, the daughter of Lieut Col Augustin Hugh Lefroy
of Carrigglas Manor, Longford and The Lodge, Boxted, Colchester and his wife Isabel Mary
Hebblethwaite. Benjamin a retired barrister was 20 years her senior. They were living at
Derrycashel in 1911 and visited America in 1913 and Canada in 1914 and 1927. They lived at
Baldonnell House, Clondalkin before moving to Gortmore Dundrum from 1932 to 1943 and then
Cedarmount in 1944. Kathleen was Hon Sec and President of the Dublin Branch of the Parents’
National Education Union. The Committee severed their connection with the school due to
mismanagement and the lack of commitment from the owners to guarantee the future of the
School. She set up a new school at Knockrabo in 1941. She was taken to court by Glen Ban School
Ltd in 1942. She lost in the High Court but the judgement was set aside by the Supreme Court on
appeal. Benjamin died 10 Jun 1946 at Cedarmount, Dundrum aged 81 and left 5K in personal estate.
Kathleen died 10 Oct 1971 and left 6K in personal estate.
