William Ledwich of Freemount, Ballinacor, County Wicklow married Elizabeth August L’Estrange
youngest daughter of late Captain Francis L’Estange, 3rd Regiment (The Buffs) on 2 Mar 1835
at St Mary’s Church. They lived at Ranelagh from 1842 to 1849, ‘May Villa’ Ballsbridge from
1851 to 1854, and Bushfield House, Philipsburg Avenue from 1855 to 1857 where William kept
prize winning poultry. Freemount was sold in 1860. William died 7 Sep 1866 and Elizabeth died
at 5 Salem Place Dublin on 1 May 1890.
1 Lydia Anne Ledwich, second daughter born circa 1839 married Arthur Irwin Mahon,
eldest son of the late Robert Henry Downes Mahon of Cavetown, Co Roscommon at
St Mary’s Church in August 1857.
2 William Augustus Ledwich born 4 Dec 1842 Ranelagh baptised at St Peters.
3 George Wilkinson Ledwich born circa 1848.
4 Anna Maria Ledwich born 8 Sep 1849 at Ranelagh, baptised at St Peters.
5 Frances Eleanor Ledwich born 14 Dec 1851 at ‘May Villa’, baptised at St Peters. She
married John Lilly Lane on 19.09.1876 at St Stephen’s Parish, Dublin. John was the son
of John Benn Lane.
6 Sarah Isabella Ledwich born circa 1853, a spinster living with her brother Edward in
1901.
7 Edward L’Estrange Ledwich born 27 Jun 1854 at 'May Villa’and baptised at St Peters
married Lillian Applebee, younger daughter of William D Applebee of Warren House,
Southport on 19 May 1888 at the Holy Priory Church in Southport. They were living at
Fitzwilliam Street in 1901 and Leeson Street in 1911. They lived at Elm Grove, Stillorgan
from 1921 to 1927.
Edward was a physician to Mercer's Hospital, a lecturer and an author and great-
grandson of Francis L'Estrange who had been president of the Royal College of Surgeons
in Ireland in 1796. Edward died at Elm Grove on 18 Jan 1927 and Lillian died 23 Nov 1940
at the rectory at Kilskyre, Kells. Both were buried at Deansgrange.
1 Edward Leyland Ledwich born 31 Oct 1893 at Harcourt Street attended St Andrew’s
College and graduated Trinity. He took Holy orders and was appointed curate to St
Mary’s, Donnybrook in 1924 and to Kilskyre in 1932. He married Elsie May O’Neill,
daughter of Frederick O’Neill a farmer of Lakefield Crossakeil, Co Meath at the
Magdalen Church in the parish of St Ann’s, Dublin on 8 Dec 1841. He became rector
of Dunshaughlin in 1958 and was made Canon in 1964. He retired as Church of
Ireland Rector of Dunshaughlin and Galtrim in 1971. The couple had two sons.
2 Kathleen Lillian Ledwich born 23 May 1900 at upper Fitzwilliam Street lived in
Batterstown Rectory with her brother and died in a car accident and was buried
with her brother at Deansgrange.
8 Augusta Ledwich, youngest daughter married John S Switzer, eldest son of the late Surgeon
Major Switzer, Indian Medical Staff on 17 Oct 1895 at Monkstown Church.
