Lecky Family of Maesgwyllyd House, Blackrock
The Lecky family were of Scottish origin and were thought to have come to Ireland in the
17th Century. John Lecky married Maria Hartpole of Shrule Castle near Carlow. In 1833
John Lecky of Portarlinton, Co Laois purchased Cullenswood House from Charles Joly.

John Hartpole Lecky of Cullenswood House, Dublin married Mary Anne Tallants circa
11.02.1837 at Newark, Nottinghamshire. Mary Anne was the youngest daughter of W E
Tallants, solicitor at Newark, Notts. Mary Anne died on 31.03 1839 aged 23 years at
Hastings.
1 William Edward Hartpole Lecky eldest son born 26.03.1838 at Maesgwyllyd House,
Newtown Park Avenue. He was educated at Kingstown, Armagh, Cheltenham and
Trinity College Dublin. He graduated in 1859 with a BA and 1863 with an MA. He was
the author of 'A History of England during the Eighteenth Century' which was published
between 1878 and 1890.
William married Catharine Elizabeth Boldewina, Baroness de Dedem eldest daughter
of General Baron van Dedem who was lady-in-waiting to Queen Sophia of Holland on
14.06.1871 at the British Embassy and the Hotel de Ville at The Hague. William died
22.10.1903 aged 65 years. In 1904, money for a memorial was raised by subscription
and a statue by Sir William Goscombe John, RA was erected in Trinity College, Dublin.
The Lecky Chair of History at TCD was endowed by his widow in 1913. Catharine died
23.05.1912.
John secondly married Isabella Eliza Wilmot on 20.04.1841 at Storrington, Sussex. Isabella
was the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Eardley Wilmot. John Lecky died in 1852.
2 Captain George Eardley Lecky born circa 1843 of the 78th Highlanders died 27.09.1874
aged 31 years at 15 Cromwell Place the residence of his mother the Countess of
Carnwath.
3 Blanche Catharine Janet Lecky baptised on 07.11.1847 at Storrington, Sussex. Hon Miss
Blanche was in Torquay in 1888 with her mother. Blanche died unmarried on 04.04.1913
late of 96 Sinclair Road, Kensington and formerly of 99 Coleherne Court, Earls Court.

Isabella then married Thomas Henry Dalzell, the Earl of Carnwath on 02.05.1855 at Taney Church,
Dundrum. Thomas died on 14.12.1867 at Bagnères de Bigorre, France. Isabella Countess of
Carnwath died on 16.10.1902 aged 83 years after a long illness at her residence in Cromwell
Place, Kensington.
1 Henry Arthur Hew of Carnwath Dalzell only child of Thomas and Isabella born 12.04.1858 at
Heidelberg in Germany. Henry died of measles on 13.03.1873 aged 15 years at school in
Harrow.
