Engelbert (Edward) Kuss born 1875 at Newcastle upon Tyne son of Englebert Kuss, a
watchmaker and Maria Ruf. Both his parents were from Germany and they lived at Elswick,
Newcastle upon Tyne. He moved to Galway and was working there as a watchmaker
finisher in 1901. He married Maud O’Loughlin on 28 Jun 1909 at Ennis Cathedral. Maud
was a servant and the daughter of John O’Loughlin, a labourer. Maud died 20 Jul 1918
aged 40 at the workhouse in Ennis.
1 Anthony Joseph (Jack) Kuss born 5 Feb 1911 at Brews Hill Navan. He was a
hairdresser and married Bridget Mary Ryan on 6 Sep 1931 at St Michael’s Church,
Tipperary. Bridget was the daughter of Richard Ryan, a horse trainer. They lived
in Tipperary and had a least ten children.
2 Maria Eileen Kuss born 3 Oct 1916 at Brews Hill Navan. Marie was a shop assistant
and married Lorcan Clarke on 2 Aug 1943 at Navan Church. Lorcan was a cabinet
maker and the son of Lawrence Clarke, a clerk. The lived in brews Hill, Navan.
Englebert secondly married Alice Collins on 18 Feb 1919 at the church of Beauparc, Navan.
Alice was a teacher living at Beauparc and the daughter of Patrick Collins. Alice died
19 Feb 1924 aged 35 at Brews Hill, Navan.
3 Gerald Valentine Kuss born 14 Feb 1920 at Brews Hill, Navan. According to an
interview he ran away from Navan home in 1939 with two pence in his pocket and
worked as a lift boy in London. He then got a job as a lift boy before getting a job as
a deck boy on a ship sailing to South America and later to Finland. On 30 Nov 1939,
Soviet forces invaded Finland in what became known as the Russo-Finnish Winter
War. Gerald went to Helsinki where on 3 Dec 1939 he volunteered. He was part of
a unit called the Osasto Sisu (Guts Unit) and was sent for training to Carelia for five
weeks. He served for seven weeks at the front, saw no combat and the war ended
on 13 Mar 1940. He stayed on in Finland and learned the language before being
transferred to Sweden. He returned to Ireland and got a job at the Clondalkin Paper
Mills.
Gerald was a clerk resident at Tyconnell Park and married Alice Saarsteiner on
11 Feb 1946 at St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Donnybrook. Alice was living at
Sandymount and the daughter of Victor Louis Saarsteiner, a waiter and Martha Anne
Archer. They had two sons. Gerald was a journalist, writer and broadcaster. He
wrote the first book on Finland by a non Finn which was very successful. He was a
keen fisherman and wrote humorous stories based on his escapades and experiences
in Finland and these were serialised by the Irish Times. He visited every country in
Northern Europe except Russia and crossed the pole to Anchorage in Alaska giving
lectures on Ireland’s fishing amenities when he was publicity officer for Bord Fáilte.
Gerald died 9 Jun 1969 at South Avenue, Mount Merrion and was buried at St Brigid’s.
4 Alice Josephine Kuss born circa 1923 was a barmaid and married Edward Quinlan
on 2 Aug 1943 at Rathgormack Church, Waterford. Edward was a corporal based at
Longford Barracks and the son of Matthew Quinan, a gardener. They lived in Carrick
on Shannon.
Englebert thirdly married Elizabeth O’Gara on 30 Jul 1925 at St Joseph’s Church, Dublin.
Elizabeth was living at Phibsboro Road and was the daughter of Michael O’Gara, a businessman.
Englebert died 13 Aug 1843 at Howth Terrace. Elizabeth died at the Mental Hospital, Mullingar
on 20 Jan 1961 aged 77.
5 Richard Kuss died a bachelor in 1949 from TB at Peamount Hospital.
6 Kay Kuss married and lived at Stackallen.
