John King, son of Edward King born circa 1851 at Carlow. He was a shopkeeper, merchant and
property owner and married Mary Hogan at Mungret, Limerick on 14 Jan 1891. Mary was the
daughter of Thomas Hogan, a farmer of Limerick. They lived at Colooney Street and in later
years they lived at O’Connell Avenue in Limerick. John died 8 Jan 1935 at Sunnymount, O’Connell
Avenue and Mary died at Limerick Hospital on 19 Mar 1934.
1 Edward Thomas (Ned) King born 29 Feb 1892 at 43 Colooney Street, Limerick. He attended the
National University of Ireland and graduated in 1915 with a degree in medicine and chemistry.
He married Anastasia Lila Catherine (Kathleen) Murphy, daughter of Laurence Murphy and
Bridget Monaghan, Drapers of 134 Baggot Street on 24 Apr 1918 at Dalkey RC Church. They
moved to Ulverton Road in Dalkey where Edward practiced as a GP and they had five boys, one of
whom died in infancy. Edward was a Nationalist and was arrested at his home in April 1921 but was
released weeks later after a campaign to free him was launched. He was the first Army Medical
Officer appointed after the take over of Beggars Bush Barracks from the British, an appointment he
resigned in 1922.
In 1921 he was offered and accepted the position of Medical Officer at the Dispensary in Stillorgan,
an appointment that was only ratified two years later. The family moved to Coin du Chemin,
Westminster Road in Foxrock. He was a consulting visiting surgeon at St Michael’s in Kingstown
and on the committee of The Sunshine Home, often using their home in Foxrock for fundraising
activities. Edward died from enteric fever (typhoid) at the Meath Hospital, late of Coin du Chemin,
Foxrock on 29 Aug 1933 after returning from a holiday on 3 Aug 1933. His funeral service was at the
Carmelite Church at Whitefriar Street and he was buried at Mount Saint Lawrence’s Cemetery in Limerick.
His funeral service was attended by members of the forces and government including Conor Alexander
Maguire, the Attorney General and Sean O’h-Uadhaigh, solicitor and republican. Kathleen had acted in
the Abbey Theatre prior to her marriage, taking parts in the production of 'Mixed Marriage' and 'The
Miser's Gift' in 1916.
After the death of her husband Kathleen moved to Deerpark Road in Dundrum with her sons.
She was involved with The Tree council of Ireland in the protection of roadside trees, she was
also active in the protection of fauna and flora in the Burren, a member of An Taisce she was
their Hon Sec in 1959.

3 Henry Alphonsus (Harry) King born 13 Jul 1895 at Colooney Street, Limerick became a medical
doctor and practiced at Aberfan in Wales. He married Mary Kennedy at St Andrew’s, Westland
Row on 30 Sep 1925. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Kennedy, a barrister at law.
4 Mary Anne King born 15 Aug 1897 at Colooney Street Limerick married Charles Bernard Moloney,
MD of Limerick Mental Hospital.
5 Thomas Gerard King born 22 Sep 1900 at Colooney Street, Limerick graduated from the RCSI and
practiced as a dental surgeon in London. He married Maureen Johanna Spillane at Edmonton in
1931. He died 30 Dec 1954 at 154 Old Oak Road, Acton.
