Patrick Kennedy married Mary McCann
Patrick Kennedy, a flour and corn merchant and married Mary McCann circa 1856. Patrick is
thought to be the son of Charles Kennedy of Caple Street, a grocer and the brother of Charles
and James Kennedy, corn merchants of Caple Street. Patrick and his family lived at Brookville,
Raheny from 1857 to 1867 and in 1865 Patrick bought out the lease of Brookville. Patrick was
a member of the RHS. They lived at Clonliffe Terrace from 1871 to 1886 and Patrick had land
at Tolart and Aughnagulla near Clonard in Co Meath. Patrick died circa 1897.
1 Mary Joanna Kennedy born at Gardiner’s Row on 2 Jun 1857 baptised at the Pro
Cathedral. Miss Kennedy professed as a novice (Sister Mary) in 1886 at the Convent
of the Good Shepard in Limerick. Christopher Palles was in attendence and she is
described as his niece, but the relationship is probably more distant, and it was
Christopher’s wife that the Kennedys were related to.
2 Charles Kennedy, eldest son born 24 July 1858 at Gardiner’s Row baptised at the Pro
Cathedral died 10 Mar 1867 at Brookville, Raheny.
3 Elizabeth Kennedy (twin) 6 October 1859 at Gardiner’s Row baptised at the Pro
Cathedral.
4 Joseph Kennedy born (twin) 6 Oct 1859 at Gardiner’s Row baptised at the Pro
Cathedral.
5 Constance Anna Kennedy born 20 Aug 1864 at Brookville, Raheny.
6 Francis Charles Kennedy second son born 13 Jul 1867 at Brookville, Coolock. He was
educated at Stonyhurst College and was called to both the Irish and English and Irish
Bar. He married Nina Mary Geoghegan on 17 Jan 1891 at St Mary’s, Harrington
Road, Dublin. Nina was the eldest daughter of Charles Geoghegan and Elizabeth
Kelly of 89 Pembroke Road, Dublin. He was admitted to King’s Inn in 1896. He acted
as Registrar to his uncle Chief Baron Palles from 1899 and was associate of the King’s
Bench. They had 6 children and moved to Longford Terrace, Monkstown in 1901 and
as Lissadell in Blackrock by 1906. His uncle Charles Kennedy of Mount Anville House,
Dundrum died in 1908 leaving his personal estate of 80K to the Jesuit order. The
family lived at Marino Park from 1910 until 1916. Francis contested the Will, he lost on
appeal in 1912 but was granted 25K by the courts. In the early hours of 15 Jun 1916
there was an attempt on his life at Marino Park. Nina was woken by her husband’s
moanings to find a stranger in their bedroom. She grappled with the intruder but he
caught her by the neck. Francis had been hit with a hammer to the head and a deep
wound had been inflicted. Hearing the disturbance three of the children entered the
bedroom, but he rushed them and knocked over furniture as he escaped. The intruder
entered through the dining room window, nothing was stolen and the police concluded
that the intruder held a grudge against Francis, but nobody was charged. Francis
recovered from the attack and continued as a Registrar and retired in 1921. He died
at an Eccles Street nursing home, late of 3 De Vesci Terrace, Kingstown on 5 Apr 1929
and was buried at Glasnevin. Nina died 22 Jul 1929 at the Mater Nursing Home and
was buried at Glasnevin.
1 Mary Nydia (Nydia) Kennedy born 30 Oct 1891 at Dartry Park, Rathmines. She
served as a VAD with the Red Cross from 1915 to 1917 and was living in
Middlesex in 1921. In 1939 she was a matron at the Convent of The Sacred Heart
School, Pembury Road, Tonbridge.
2 Ita Mary Kennedy born 22 Jun 1893 at 55 Wellington Road, Donnybrook died from
TB at the Lourdes Hospital, Kill O the Grange on 18 Dec 1920 and was buried at
Glasnevin.
3 Joseph Patrick Kennedy 23 Nov 1895 at 55 Wellington Road, Donnybrook was
called to the bar in 1942.
4 Charles Michael Kennedy born 21 Jan 1897 at 1 Grosvenor Terrace, Kingstown
attended Stoneyhurst College in Lancashire. He received a commission as
Lieutenant with the 3rd Battalion, Leinster Regiment in 1915. He was a barrister
and died a bachelor at De Vesci Terrace on 13 Nov 1925 from TB and was buried at
Glasnevin.
5 Norman Malachy Kennedy (twin) born 21 Apr 1900 at 1 Grosvenor Terrace,
Kingstown was a chartered accountant working for the Malay government. He died
2 Jun 1965 Leighton Buzzard.
6 Francis Victor Kennedy (twin) born 21 Apr 1900 at 1 Grosvenor Terrace, Kingstown
married Nina Chevers at St Cuthberts, Witherington, Manchester on 11 Jul 1923. He
was a chartered accountant. He was single living at Bracken Hill, Fielden Road,
Crowborough in 1939 and died in 1977.
7 James Kennedy fourth son born 7 Feb 1871 at Clonliffe Parade, Fairview baptised at St
Agathas. He was a solicitor working at Naas and Newbridge. He married Christina
Bridget O’Grady in 1897 and had two children Joseph and Reginald by 1901. He was
agent to Charles Engledow, MP of Kildare. He died from TB on 9 Nov 1903 at Charlemont
Hospital aged 33 having undergone operations in both Dublin and London. His funeral
mass was held at the Jesuit’s Church in Gardiner Street and he was buried at Glasnevin.
A third child Leo was born posthumously.
8 John Aloysius Kennedy born 22 October 1872 at Clonliffe Parade, baptised at St Agathas.
9 Gertrude Mary Josephine Kennedy born 23 Aug 1874 at Clonliffe Parade baptised at St
Agathas.
10 Anna Mary Josephine Madaline Kennedy born 21 July 1876 at Clonliffe Parade baptised at
St Agathas.
