The Goughs of St Helen’s, Booterstown
Colonel George Gough born circa 1750 married Letitia Bunbury. Letitia died in Dublin on
13 Oct 1828 and George died 9 Mar 1836 at Rathronan House.
1 George Gough eldest son born circa 1775 Ardsallas Co Tipperary. He married
Sarah Croker circa 1814. Sarah was the daughter of Edward Prittie Croker, of
Ballynagarde, Co Limerick. He served during the peninsular wars and attained the
rank of Major. He died 13 Jun 1841 at Dublin, late of Woodsdown and Sarah died
on 14 Feb 1870 at Birdhill, Co Tipperary.
2 Thomas Bunbury Gough was born on 13 Jun 1777. He graduated Trinity College
and took Holy orders. He married Charlotte Bloomfield on 19 Mar 1800. Charlotte
was the daughter of John Bloomfield, of Redwood, Newport, Co Tipperary and the
granddaughter of Lord Jocelyn. Thomas Gough, DD was later Dean of Derry.
1 George Gough eldest son born circa 1802. He became a High Court Judge
in Bengal. He married Anna Maria Birch, in India on 22 Dec 1823. He
secondly married Charlotte Vaughan Hart in February 1827. Charlotte was
the eldest daughter of General Sir George Vaughan Hart, MP, Governor of
Londonderry and Culmore Fort. Charlotte died at sea on 17 Aug 1827.
George thirdly married Charlotte Margaret Becher at the Cathedral East
Indies on 11 Jun 1829. Margaret was the third daughter of C Becher.
1 Charles John Stanley Gough born 1832 in India. He joined the Indian
army and attained the rank of Major. He was awarded the Victoria
Cross in October 1859 for gallantry. It was recorded that this was
the first time that the Victoria Cross had been given to two brothers.
He married Harriette Anastasia de la Poer on 16 Jun 1870 and they
had six children of whom two sons survived to adulthood. He died
6 Sep 1912 in Tipperary and was buried at St Patrick's Clonmel. He
left 33K in personal estate.
2 Hugh Henry Gough born 1833 in India joined the Indian army and
attained the rank of General. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for
gallantry in August 1859. He married Anne Margaret Hill on 8 Sep 1863
and they had five sons and four daughters. Margaret was the daughter
of Edward Eustace Hill and Georgiana Charlotte (Keppel) Magan. In
later life he was keeper of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. He
was knighted in 1896. He died 12 May 1909 and was buried at Kensal
Green Cemetery.
3 Charlotte Isabella Gough eldest daughter born 29 Nov 1835 died
13 Dec 1854 at St Helen’s and was buried at Stillorgan Parish
graveyard.
3 William Gough born circa 1778. He joined the 68th Regiment and attained the rank
of Major. He was reported that he had a short leg. He died when the packet ship
Albion was wrecked off the Old Head of Kinsale on 22 Apr 1822. His body was not
found but his watch and seals were recovered.
4 Hugh Gough fourth son born 3 Nov 1779 at Woodstown, Co Limerick. He was
commissioned into the Limerick Militia in 1792 and had transferred to the 76th
Highlanders by 1795. He fought at the Cape of Good Hope and later at Barossa. He
married Frances Maria Stephens on 3 Jun 1807 at Stoke Damerel, Devon. Frances
born 9 Aug 1787 was a minor but her father General Edward Stevens gave his
permission. Hugh was with the 87th Regiment of Foot (known as Faugh a Ballaghs)
at the siege of Tarifa in Spain and led his regiment into battle with the band playing
the famous Irish tune 'Garryowen' and the Irish jig 'St Patricks Day-. He was knighted
in 1815 and in 1819 Gough was given command of the 22nd Regiment of Foot, which
was sent to Ireland in 1821. He leased Rathronan House an estate in Tipperary in
1826. Major-General Gough and Frances moved to Bangalore in 1837 when he was
appointed commander of the Mysore Division of the Madras Army.
He was involved in the Opium war and instrumental in the negotiation of the Treaty
of Nanking in 1842 which opened up the Chinese market to England. In 1843 Gough
returned to India, where he was appointed commander-in-chief of the British Army
and where he spent the next six years. He led the British Army in annexing the
Punjab and perhaps was even involved in the capture of the famous Kohlnoor
(Koh-i-nur) diamond, which afterwards was presented to the Queen of England by
the British Commissioner. He was made a Viscount in 1849 and voted a pension of
2K pa for him and his next two successors by parliament, and also had 2K pa from
the East India Company. He purchased St Helen’s from Col White in 1851 for 10K.
Frances, Viscountess Gough died on 15 Mar 1863. She was buried in the new family
vault at Stillorgan Parish Church. Hugh died at St Helen’s, Booterstown on 2 Mar 1869,
he lay in state at St Helen’s and with no military honours, as were his wishes, he was
interred with his wife at Stillorgan graveyard. He left 40K in personal estate. On
21 Feb 1880 a statue in his honour was unveiled at the Phoenix Park. Designed by
John Henry Foley and finished by William Thomas Brock, it was created using
gunmetal and canon metal taken capture by his troops, granted by parliament, and
cast by Messrs Mansfield of Chelsea. The statue was frequently vandalised and
eventually blown up by the IRA. Its demise inspired a Dublin ditty by Vincent Caprani.
The statue was removed from the park in 1957 and sold by the OPW in 1986. It now
stands in Chillingham Castle, Northumberland.

2 Letitia Mary Gough eldest daughter born circa 1814 married Edward Supple
on 27 Feb 1836 at Rathronan Church. Edward was the heir of John Collis.
3 George Stephens Gough only surviving son born 18 Jan 1815. He married
Sarah Elizabeth Palliser on 17 Oct 1840 at Florence. Sarah was the daughter
of Col Palliser of Comeragh, Co Waterford. Sarah died in Italy in September
1841.
He secondly married Jane Arbuthnot on 3 Jan 1846, Jane was the daughter
of George Arbuthnot, 1st Earl of Elderslie. He gained the rank of Captain in
the Grenadier Guards. They resided at Lough Cutra Castle which was
purchased by his father in 1854. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant of
Co Galway and was a magistrate at Gort. George became the 2nd Viscount
on the death of his father in 1869 and moved into St Helen’s. He was a
director of the Midland Railway. Jane died 3 Feb 1892 at St Helen’s and was
buried in the family vault at Stillorgan. George died 31 May 1895 at St Helen’s,
Booterstown. He was buried with his wife in the family vault at Stillorgan
graveyard. He left 71k in personal estate.
1 Frances Anne Mary Gough born circa 1848 died 23 Jan 1855 at
Rathronan House.
2 Hugh Gough eldest son born 27 Aug 1849 married Lady Georgiana
Francis Henrietta Pakenham on 5 Oct 1889 at St Georges, Hanover
Square. Georgiana was the eldest daughter of the late Earl of Longford
and his wife Selina Rice-Trevor. He became the 3rd Viscount on the
death of his father in 1895. Hugh was Secretary of the Legation in
Stockholm and was with the Diplomatic Service from 1873 to 1907. He
put St Helen’s up for sale in 1897. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Co
Galway. He died 14 Oct 1919 at a Dublin nursing Home, late of Lough
Cultra and was buried in the family vault at Stillorgan. Georgiana died
in England on 30 July 1943 and was buried at St Mary’s, Chichester.
1 Katherine Gough born 6 Oct 1890. She married Edward Sturdy
in London in 1910 and died 21 Apr 1949.
2 Hugh William Gough born 22 Feb 1892 at Harcourt Street. He
married Margaretta Elizabeth Maryon-Wilson. He fought in the
First World War, was wounded twice and lost his arm. He was
awarded the Military Cross. Margaretta became the heiress to the
Maryon-Wilson estates on the death of her brother in 1938. Hugh
died 4 Dec 1951 in Inverness, Scotland and was buried at Stillorgan.
1 Shane Hugh Maryon Gough born 1941 was only ten when
he inherited the titles. 5th Viscount Gough never married
and the titles extinct by his death this year include Baron
Gough of Chin Kang Foo, Baron Gough of Maharaj Poret &
Sutlej. He served with the Irish Guards from 1962 to 1967
and was later a stockbroker. He was a director of Barwell
Consulting and a benefactor of St Luke’s, Charlton, London
which he contributed to, having new bells installed and the
replacement of the roof and tower repairs. He was president
of the Midlands Branch of the Irish Guards Association.
3 Hilda Frances Gough born circa 1893 died 5 May 1893.
3 George Gough second son born 25 July 1852 in Co Tipperary.
He married Hilda Moffat and they had six children. He was
Assistant Military Secretary to the HQ Curragh Camp from 1887
to 1889. He died on 28 Mar 1900 at Norval’s Point in South Africa.
4 Eleanor Laura Jane Gough born 13 Oct 1854. She married Robert
Algernon Persse on 29 July 1886. She died 21 Feb 1935.
5 Hugh Rudolph Gough born 11 Jan 1856 was a Lieutenant in the
Coldstream Guards and fought in the Zula wars. He died
19 Apr 1879 in South Africa.
4 Gertrude Sophia Gough second daughter baptised 10 Nov 1816 at
Colchester. She married Archibald Francis Arbuthnot at Bangalore in
May 1838. Archibald was the fourth son of Sir William Arbuthnot.
5 Jane Eliza Mona Gough baptised 28 Mar 1819 at Beaumaris, Anglesey,
Wales. She married Gregory Haines on 24 Oct 1840 at St Mark’s,
Bangalore. Gregory was a lieutenant in the 18th MNL and assistant to
the Commissioner of Mysore. He was the eldest son of Gregory Haines
Commissary General of Ireland.
6 Frances Maria Gough youngest daughter married Major Patrick Grant,
Deputy Adjutant on 17 Sep 1844 at Simla, Bengal. He was later a field
marshall.
5 Catherine Jane Gough eldest daughter married Lieut Col Richard Lloyd in May
1810 at Kilsennon Church, Limerick.
1 Letitia Bunbury Lloyd only daughter born circa 1813 died at Ardsallagh,
near Fethard on 3 Aug 1834.
6 Eliza Gough second daughter born circa 1788 married Benjamin Frend of Boskil,
Co Limerick in March 1810.
