Hughes Family of The Grove Stillorgan
James Hughes of Ballinrobe Mayo born circa 1740 married Letitia daughter of the Rev William
Ireland, Rector of Cong Co Mayo, Warder of Galway and Margaret De Courcy in 1774. James died
09.11.1786 aged 46 years.
1 John Hughes born 01.05.1775 married Eleanor Collins eldest daughter of the late James
Collins of Dublin and formerly of Chew Magna, Somerset on 10.05.1806 at St Peter’s Church
in Dublin. John a Secretary of the Irish Barrack Board was elected a member of the RDS in
1802. He was involved in the construction of military roads in Wicklow. John died 09.02.1852
aged 76 years. Elinor died 17.06.1858 aged 72 years. They are buried at Stillorgan graveyard.
1 James Freeman Hughes eldest son born 19.02.1808 of Denzille Street, Trinity
College AB, Barrister at law married Martha 4th daughter of the late William Redfern
of Churchfield Edgbaston on 15.09.1842 at Edgbaston Church, Worcestershire.
James Freeman Hughes joined the RDS in 1840. James died on 29.12.1875 aged 67
years and his wife Martha died on 07.05.1896 aged 83 years. They are buried at
Stillorgan churchyard.
1 Constant Grace Martha Hughes born 02.10.1843 married James son of William
Wilson of Currygrane, Co. Longford on 02.10.1861 at St Brigids Church
Stillorgan. James was born in Belfast on 11.07.1832 and was a JP and DL for
Co Longford, High Sheriff 1864. In the 1901 Census they were living at
Currygrane, Longford.
2 Eleanor Anne Catherine Hughes born 22.01.1845 died of Bronchitis on
31.12.1845 aged 11 months at The Grove.
3 Anna Maria De Courcy Hughes 2nd daughter born 09.10.1846 married
William Bigoe only son of James Ferrier Armstrong of Bal-Iver on 04.04.1866
at St Brigids Church, Stillorgan.
4 Honoria Hughes born 17.07.1848 married James Ferrier Pollock a Physician
son of James Pollock on 17.07.1867 at St Brigid's Church Stillorgan. He was
Medical Officer of the Stillorgan Dispensary from 1862 to 1866. In the
1901 Census they were living at Avoca Avenue, Blackrock.
5 John De Courcy Hughes eldest son born 15.05.1850 died 21.10.1874 aged
24 years and is buried at St Brigids.
6 Martha Rosa Hughes 4th daughter born 06.03.1852 married George Lovett
Bennett (Major) of the Grange Parsonstown son of John Bennett on
04.09.1872 at St Brigid's Church Stillorgan. In the 1901 Census they were
living the Grange, Seirkieran, Kings Co.
7 Edith Redfern Hughes born circa 1854 married Rev John Charles Creed of
Janeville son of John Charles Creed on 02.07.1873 at St Brigid's Church
Stillorgan. Their daughter Rebecca Edith was baptised on 22.03.1877 in St
Brigids. In the 1901 Census they were living at Moyglare, Rodanstown,
Meath.
8 James De Courcy Ireland Hughes born 19.05.1856 a Captain in the Royal Queens
County Rifles married Mary Isabella Hayes, 3rd daughter of Captain Hayes of
Tigroney House, Ovoca and Linden Gardens, London at Castle MacAdam
Church, Ovoca, Wicklow on 12.09.1878. James died on the 18.01.1884 at
Black Hill House, Abbeyleix aged 27 years. Mary died at Frescati, Blackrock on
30.09.1890 she left 2K in personal estate to the Rev John C Creed, the guardian of
minor children.
1 John Redfern De Courcy died at Black Hill 03.05.1881 aged 1 year.
2 Muriel Edith De Courcy, only daughter born 23.11.1881 at Black Hill.
2 Vivian De Courcy Hughes born 14.07.1883 at Black Hill, Abbeyleix.
2 John Emanuel Hughes 2nd son born 08.11.1809 Trinity College AB a Solicitor died
11.02.1889 at his residence 17 Prince Edward Terrace, Blackrock.
3 Henrietta Hughes eldest daughter died at 17 Prince Edward Terrace Blackrock on
12.02.1896.
4 Eleanor Jane Hughes 2nd daughter died 21.09.1825 of Denzil Street, Dublin.
5 Constant Grace Hughes 2nd daughter married William son of William Graves of the
Bank of Ireland on 17.08.1840 at Carlow Church. William was a clerk in the General Post
Office and died 01.09.1851. Grace died 23.01.1866 at Sydney Avenue, Blackrock.

3 James Foxall Graves born 11.11.1849 at 10 Denzille Street.
