Foley of Brookvale and Tralee.
Peter Foley born circa 1775 of Denny Street Tralee. He was a supporter of O’Connell and
in 1828 he was appointed one of the five census collectors, alongside O’Connell, for
Kerry. This was to determine the parishes in the county, the name of each Catholic
clergyman, parishes who collected Catholic Rent, those not collecting it and the
reason why. He had land at Cloghane mountain and corn stores in Tralee. Peter died
30 Jun 1843 at The Spa, Tralee and his wife died January 1844 at Denny Street.
1 Maryanne Foley eldest daughter born circa 1801 died a spinster at Denny Street
on 29 Nov 1868. Her funeral was held at St John the Baptist Church. She left 3K in
personal estate.
2 Catherine (Kate) Foley born circa 1803. She lived at Denny Street and by 1863, she
and her sister Maryanne had contributed £450 to St John’s Parish fund. She had
property at Castle Street and Day Place, Tralee which she rented out. She died a
spinster at Denny Street on 3 Feb 1871. She left 2K in personal estate and 25
Denny Street was put up for let shortly after her death by her nephew Edward.
3 Trant Foley eldest son born circa 1811 died at Denny Street on 1 Jun 1830.
4 John Foley died unmarried in January 1838 at Kilrush, Co Clare.
5 James Foley was with the 58th Regiment. He married Mary Anne. He died before
1836. Mary Ann died at her Lodgings in King Street on 12 Feb 1853.
1 William Foley of the 16th Regiment, death announced in January 1836.
6 Peter Edward Trant Foley. As only surviving son he married Maria Louisa Howley on
27 Feb 1838. Maria was the second daughter of Edward Howley of Belleek Castle, Co
Mayo. He was appointed a JP in 1840 and moved to his new residence Ballyard
House. The put Ballyard House up for rent in 1843. Maria Louisa died from fever on
13 Feb 1848 at Mount Street. Peter died in April 1849 at his sisters’ residence on
Denny Street, leaving young motherless children.
1 Mary Louisa Foley eldest daughter born November 1840 at Ballyard House
married Samuel Teeling on 8 Aug 1872 at Annagh Catholic Church. Samuel
was the fourth son of Charles George Teeling of Dublin.
2 Peter Trant Foley eldest son born 12 Nov 1839 at Leeson Street, Dublin was
with the 73rd Regiment by 1860 and retired in 1863. He died a bachelor on
28 May 1877 late of 4 Gipsy Hill, Upper Norwood, Surrey.
3 Clara Kate Foley, youngest daughter born 10 Feb 1842 at Ballyard House
married William Kelly on 23 Nov 1872 at Marlborough Street Chapel. William
was a JP of Ashbrooke, Co Kerry. Clare died 19 Dec 1920 at Clarinda Park
and was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Edward Howley Foley born September 1844 at Mount Street, Dublin. Edward
was of Denny Street and Ballyard House, Tralee, Co Kerry. He was a member
of the Kerry Horticultural Society and the owner of over 1600 acres in Co
Kerry in 1876. He married Elizabeth (Bessie) Webster on 25 Apr 1877 at St
George’s, Hanover Square, London. Bessie was the eldest daughter of
Alphonsus Webster of 44 Mecklenburgh Square, London and his wife
Louisa Harrison. Edward died 20 Oct 1888 at St Ann’s Hill, Blarney, Co Cork
and left 1K in personal estate. Elizabeth was living at Greystones in 1901 and
at Brookvale, Stillorgan from 1902 to 1904. She was a border living at Clarinda
Park in 1911. Elizabeth died 15 Dec 1933 at 6 Longford Place, Dun Laoghaire.
1 Violet Elsie Howley Foley born 6 Jan 1879 at Manchester Street,
Manchester Square. London. She was living with her aunt Mary Teeling in
1901. She went to Singapore in 1921. She was looking to get in touch with
her sister in law Maria Esther in 1940. Violet, a spinster and retired
matron died 16 May 1962 at Carysfort Nursing Home late of Claremont
Villas, Glenageary. She was buried with her aunt Clara and mother at
Deansgrange.
2 Daisy Gwendoline Clara Howley Foley second daughter born 13 May 1880
in Tralee. She was a pupil teacher in 1911 and later trained as an nurse.
She served throughout the war. She was working at the Victoria Hospital
Lewes in 1939. She died a spinster 18 May 1954 at Hove Sussex. She left
7K in personal estate.
3 Peter Trant Foley, eldest son born 29 Jun 1882 at Ballyard. He was an
agent for Norwich Life Assurance living at Denny Street in 1901 and was on
the committee of the Kerry Infirmary in 1902. He was also a member of
the GAA and involved with musicals. He joined the Kerry Militia (Royal
Munster Fusiliers) in 1904 and was a captain by 1909. He was a provost
marshal in France by 1916. He married Madam Maria Esther. Major Foley,
OBE died 3 Jan 1936 at Boulogne. He was survived by a widow and four
children.
4 Mary Gladys Corinne Foley third daughter born 15 May 1881 in Tralee. She
was educated at Kilkenny College and trained as a nurse in the Royal
Victoria Hospital, Belfast. She joined the Queen Alexandra Nurses in 1909
and served during WW1 in clearing stations. She was awarded Red Cross
medals and a military medal for bravery in 1917. By 1918 she was entitled
to the 'Mons' Cross. She was awarded the OBE in 1919 for coolness and
gallantry under a shelling attack. Major Mary Howley Foley died a spinster
on 9 Apr 1960 at Hastings, Sussex and left 3K in personal estate.
5 Claude Alexis Edward Trant Foley born 13 Apr 1884 at Ballyard died from
pneumonia on 13 Jun 1884.
6 Winifred Eileen Barbara Esme (Dorothy) Foley born 7 Mar 1886 at St Anne’s
Hill, Cork. She was living with her mother in Greystones in 1901. She married
Robert Steel Coffey on 18 Jun 1913 at St Peter's Church, Dublin. Robert was
a widower and the son of William Coffee a merchant. He was a Presbyterian
clergyman to the military in Mullingar and 42 years her senior.
