Hort Family of Leopardstown Park House
John Hort 2nd son born 8 Aug 1735 and was appointed his Majesty’s Consul-General at Lisbon.
On 8 Sep 1767 he was created a Baronet. Sir John married Margaret Aylmer daughter of Sir Fitzgerald
Aylmer of Donadea Castle in October 1789.

3 Fenton Hort 3rd son born circa 1794 married Anne Collett eldest daughter of Rev Anthony
Collet of Kelsall Hall, Suffolk clergyman in April 1825. Fenton purchased a house near Dublin
called Leopardstown circa 1830. He lived at Leopardstown for part of the year and the rest in
Merrion Square. He was a life member of the Royal Dublin Society, a member of the natural
philosophy committee and a governor of the Foundling Hospital and was High Sheriff of
County Dublin in 1834. In 1837 Samuel Lewis mentions that 'The handsome residence of
Fenton Hort Esq is situated in a demesne of about 200 acres.' In December 1838 the
entire contents of the house, being the property of Fenton Hort were advertised for Auction
and in 1839 the house was sold and the Horts moved to Cheltenham. Anne died 23 Jun 1866
aged 64 at Elkington House, Cheltenham.
1 Fenton John Anthony Hort born 1828 became a Cambridge theologian and was co-
editor of The New Testament in the original Greek. When Fenton was 9 years of age
his father sold Leopardstown. Fenton married Fanny Henrietta Dyson Holland
daughter of TJ Dyson Holland on 14 May 1857 at Cleve, Somersetshire. Fenton died
on 30 Nov 1892 at Cambridge.

of George Charles Bell in 1894 at St Peter and St Paul, Marlborough,
Wiltshire.

Augusta Gordon daughter of Arthur P Gordon on 20 Apr 1897 at
Newtimber, Sussex.

When Fenton Hort visited Dublin fifty years later in 1888 to receive an honorary degree
he sketched a plan of the Leopardstown house and gardens from memory and this was
verified the next day when he visited Leopardstown.
