Hatchell family of Wexford and Mount Merrion
Nicholas Christopher Hore Hatchell born circa 1760 was a Dublin banker and later a banker
in Wexford. He married Elizabeth Jacob circa January 1795 in Wexford. Elizabeth was the
daughter of Ebenezer Jacob of Wexford. They had at least eight children. Elizabeth died
at Kilscronan in July 1808. Nicholas died 7 Nov 1822 at Wexford.
1 Eliza Hatchell, eldest daughter married Captain Hippolitus Mitchell of the 97th
Regiment at Castle Bridge, Wexford in May 1816.
2 Ebenezer Hore Hatchell second son born 18 Jun 1798 in Co Wexford. He graduated
Trinity in 1818 and was called to the Irish Bar in 1824. He married Emily McKane in
1829. They lived as Mount Merrion on the Stillorgan Road from 1845 to 1848 and
also had an interest in Fort William across the avenue. He died 30 Nov 1848 at 50
Holles Street and was buried at Mount Jerome. Emily died 18 Aug 1866 aged 60 at
Bray and was buried with her husband.
1 Thomas Henry Hatchell born at Westland Row baptised 8 Sep 1830 at St Marks.
He graduated Trinity and took Holy orders. He was appointed to the curacy of
Killeban in 1852 and ordained priest at Waterford Cathedral in 1855. He
married Eliza Scott on 2 Jun 1857 at Hacketstown. Eliza was the daughter of
the Rev William Scott, rector of Hacketstown. Eliza’s brother the Rev Edward B
Scott officiated. He moved from Thomastown to Staplestown in 1869. He was
a Canon and later Archdeacon of Leighlin and retired in 1912. Elizabeth died
5 Dec 1887 at Ballinacarrig, Co Carlow. Thomas died on 28 Sep 1916 at 67
Lower Leeson Street, Dublin and was buried at Staplestown Churchyard.
2 Elizabeth Penelope Hatchell born 7 Aug 1831 at Newfort, Co Wexford listed as a
imbecile in the 1911 census. She died a spinster at Staplestown Rectory on
21 Oct 1912. Her brother Thomas the informant.
3 Martha Jane Hatchell born 10 Jan 1833 at Westland Row baptised at St Marks.
She died a spinster at Staplestown Rectory on 27 Jan 1903. Her brother
Thomas the informant.
4 Ebenezer John Hatchell born 7 Aug 1834 at Holles Street baptised at St Peter’s.
He attended Trinity College. He was a staff assistant Surgeon, Army Medical
Department and retired in 1869. He died 30 June 1881 at Villa d’Este, Como,
Italy late of Staplestown Rectory.
5 Edward William Hatchell born February 1836 at Holles Street died 1 Apr 1836
aged one month and ten days at Holles Street. He was buried at St Paul’s and
is remembered on the family grave in Mount Jerome.
6 William Hatchell born 6 Apr 1837 died 2 May 1837 aged 1 month buried St
Paul’s and is remembered on the family grave at Mount Jerome.
7 William Brewster Hatchell born 8 Sep 1842 at Holles Street 1842 baptised at
St Peters died 2 Jul 1843 aged 10 months. He was buried at St Paul’s and is
remembered on the family grave at Mount Jerome.
3 Christopher Hore Hatchell joined the 76th Regiment and attained the rank of
captain. He married Editha Hobbs in 1821. Christopher died on the Island of Jersey
in 1849.
1 Edith Hatchell eldest daughter died 22 Dec 1894 at Derby Haven House, Isle of
Man.
2 Christopher Hore Hatchell born circa 1838 joined the 43rd Monmouthshire Light Infantry.
As eldest surviving son he drowned at Queenstown, Cork on 11 Oct 1870.
3 David Thompson Hatchell second son was a Lieut and adjutant 34th Madras Light Infantry.
He was resident of Dalkey and married Eliza Emily Moore Lane at Monkstown Church on
10 Nov 1864. Eliza was the second surviving daughter of the late Thomas Moore Lane of
the Madras Medical Service.
4 Henry Hore Hatchell born circa 1808 admitted Kings Inns in 1824. As his father
was deceased, his brother in law Captain Mitchell signed the affidavit.
