Thomas Radford Hope born near Liverpool, and educated at the High School there in its early
days. He had a thorough business training in the offices of Colonial and General Brokers
and was a member of the local stock exchange. He visited the West Indies and almost every
state in America. T Radford Hope was a stock broker, landowner, miller, farmer, property
developer and philanthropist with offices at Bank-buildings, 48 Castle-street. He married
Mary Ann Manning second daughter of John Manning on 15 May 1851 at Belvoir Street
Chapel in Leicester. The family lived in Liverpool and T Radford was proprietor of the Henfryn
Hall estate in Flint in Wales where he also held the Marian Mills. In 1874 the live stock and farm
implements were put up from sale as the Hope were moving to a new residence. Between
1876 and 1879 the family were living at Dunstaffnage and by 1881 they had settled at Redhill
near Reigate. He was president of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1883 and
involved with the Temperance Movement. He was a town councillor and treasurer to the
Liverpool dispensaries. He opened day care centres for young children so that parents could
continue to work. He opened schools and arranged outdoor relief for the poor. During the
strikes of the 1870's T Radford appears to have had a good rapport with his employees. He
believed that love and mutual respect was what worked best between owners and employees
and had no faith in governing workers through fear. In 1879 the family moved to Reigate
where T Radford continued his involvement with borough affairs and his philanthropic works.
