Henry Hitchins born circa 1842 son of Henry Martyn Hitchens, civil servant and Isabella
Kennedy. He was appointed a civil servant to the paymaster's office in 1859. He was
later chief clerk of Paymaster Generals Office, Dublin Castle. His father originally from
Devon was director of the Irish Convict Prisons. He married Mary Eliza (Minnie) Mayne
youngest daughter of Richard Mayne of Glynch House, Monaghan on 29.08.1876 at
Christ Church, Kingstown. They lived at Belmont Villa from 1886 to 1892 and moved
to Crosthwaite Park and later Sandycove Road. Henry retired circa 1905 and died
06.02.1920 at Sandycove Road. He was buried at Deansgrange. Mary died 05.11.1922
and was buried with her husband.
1 Gerald Wilson Mayne Hitchins born 02.04.1879 at 19 Percy Place. Gerald joined
the Royal Navy and served during WW1. As a Master Mariner he married
Maud Waters a widow and daughter of Alfred Jeffries on 20.12.1926 at the
Church of St Matthias Church in South Kensington. He died 20.02.1947 in
Cheshire.
2 Henry Mayne Hitchins born 05.10.1880 at 19 Percy Place. Henry worked in the
Bank of Ireland at the Belfast branch. A second lieutenant with the Royal Irish
Rifles, he was killed in action on 18.08.1918 aged 38 years. He is remembered
at the Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
3 Louisa Mary Hitchins born 23.11.1881 at 63 Upper Leeson Street living with her
parents Crosthwaite Park in 1911. She was working as a hospital sister at the
General Infirmary Chester in 1911.
4 Richard Mayne Hitchins born 23.06.1883 at 63 Upper Leeson Street. Richard
was working as an accountant for Guinness Brewery in 1911. He enlisted on
20.12.1914 to the Royal Marine Artillery and served as a driver with the
Expeditionary Forces in France. Richard married Muriel Large, daughter of
Thomas David Large of Ingleside, Carrickmines on 03.03.1927 at Tullow Parish
Church. Witnesses Thos D Large and D E Mayne Hitchins. Richard died on
27.06.1958 aged 75 years at Wendy’s House, Delgany and Muriel died on
04.08.1965 and they are buried at Delgany.
5 William Mayne Hitchins born 04.02.1885 at 63 Upper Leeson Street. William a
surgeon married Eva Blanche Loibl daughter of Emil Loibl on 18.08.1924 at
Greystones Parish Church. William died on 19.12.1932 at Inglewood,
Winscombe, Somerset.
6 Dorothy Edith Mayne Hitchins born 11.02.1887 at Belmont Villa, Dundrum was
baptised at Taney. She was a competitive gymnast and was principal of the
Ling Gymnasium and Swedish Institute from 1918 to 1929. She was also the
drill Instructress at the Boy’s High School in Harcourt Street. Dorothy was living
in 1921 at 1 St Chad’s Terrace, Blackpool and later lived on the Isle of Wight.
