Henry Hildebrand born circa 1806 in Galway. He is thought to be one of the grandchildren of Johann
Heinrich Hildebrand and his wife Anna Sievers of Westphalia, Saxony. Henry lived in various places
including, Boffin Island and Charleville House. His brother George worked as a land agent to the
Marquis of Sligo and lived at Cherry Cottage, Westport with his wife Eliza. George fell out with the
Marquis and sued him in 1855. Henry or possibly his brother George rescued 16 members of the crew
of the Huntley when it floundered off the coast in 1832. While others refused to help them as they
were thought to be suffering from cholera. Henry brought them ashore and brought them to his own
house where it was discovered that they were suffering from frostbite. He also saved the crew and
passengers of the Prince of Seas in 1852 from being wrecked on the rocks off Boffin Island by guiding it
into deeper water and later guiding her into safe harbour. Henry a farmer and manure merchant was
adjudged bankrupt in 1874. His sister in law Eliza, widow of George moved to Dublin with her son
William, she died 20 Apr 1877 at 21 Mountjoy Street and her son William was initially implicated in her
death on 20 Apr 1877 and of stealing money from her. Louisa died 8 Jul 1872 and was buried at
Turlough Church Of Ireland graveyard. Henry died 5 May 1885 at Turlough.

pleasure party on the Shannon River on 9 May 1852.
2 Henry Perry Hildebrand as eldest son born circa 1837 married Frances Jane Shea, only child
of Gartside Shea of Shennenagh, Co Galway at Christ’s Church, Clifton on 16 Dec 1862. Henry
was the station master at Westport before moving as stationmaster to Claremorris, Co Mayo.
Henry died 6 Feb 1897 at Nicolas Street, Dublin. Frances born circa 1835, a widow living at
Baggot Street Lower in 1901. She kept a boarding House.

4 Anna Louisa Hildebrand born 5 Aug 1842 was a frequent contributor to periodicals and
newspapers. She signed herself as ALH. She was the author of Western Lyrics published in 1872
and Lays from the land of Gaels in 1879. She was also author of the poem 'No Irish need apply'.
and penned the lyrics 'The River' for which Henry Pontet wrote the music. She died a spinster
on 3 Feb 1926 at 29 Oakland Terrace, Terenure and was buried at Mount Jerome.
5 George St Clair Hildebrand born circa 1845 in Clifton, Galway. He married Emily Frances
Fetherston of Kanturk at St Peter’s Church Kanturk on 20 Feb 1873. He was a railway Station
Master and later district-inspector of the Midland Great Western Railway Company. George died
on 29 Jun 1902 at Georges Street, Sligo.
1 George Louis Hildebrand eldest son born 12 Dec 1873 at Sligo Railway Station. George
became a DI in the RIC. He married Annie Hamilton younger daughter of Alexander
Hamilton on 19 Feb 1903 at Christchurch, Leeson Park. George, County Inspector of the
RIC for Tyrone died in April 1947.

married Crawford Gordon Rogers on 17 Sep 1924 at Strangford.

a Master Carpenter living at Portraine Demesne in 1901.

Trinity College. Christopher married Anna Mary (Nancy) Sayers on 8 Dec 1909 at St
Gabriel’s Church, Sunderland. Nancy was the second daughter of Henry Baker Sayers
of Fethard, Co Tipperary. Christopher a retired teacher died at Sligo on 5 Aug 1963.
7 Percy Cevers Hildebrand born 29 Nov 1883 at Sligo Railway Station was an engineer. He
married Mary McLaren on 15 Jan 1929 at Cooke Centenary Church on 15 Jan 1929.
Mary was the only daughter of J and E McLaren of Ballybrittas, Queen’s County. Perry
died at Belfast on 25 Feb 1935.
8 Seward Hildebrand sixth son born 25 Aug 1885 at Sligo Railway Station married Isabella
Josephine (Jo) Browne at Calry Parish Church, Sligo on 19 Aug 1915. Isabella was the
daughter of Robert Browne, a clerk of John Street, Sligo. Seward was chief stores clerk at
Sligo Railway Station and later agency manager of Norwich Assurance Company. Jo died
6 Jun 1916 and Seward died 7 Jun 1919. Both were buried at Sligo Town Cemetery.
9 Emily V Hildebrand born 9 Aug 1877 at Sligo Railway Station.
10 Alfred William Hildebrand seventh son born 4 Aug 1889 at Sligo Railway Station. He died
7 Aug 1911 at Canada aged 22 years.
11 William Harolen Hildebrand born 28 Jul 1892 at George’s Street, Sligo attended
the Masonic School in Clonskeagh staying on to work there as a teacher. He married
Rubie Johnston on 20 Sep 1915 at Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines. William was a
lieutenant in the Liverpool Regiment 15th battalion and was resident at the Guinness
stores at Grand Canal Quay. Rubie was the daughter of Charles Penrose Johnston, a
merchant. They lived at Sefton, Stillorgan from 1923 to 1925. It is though that they moved
America for a few years before returning to live in Stillorgan at Hopetoun on the Stillorgan
Road. They moved to Dundalk and returned to live in Stillorgan in 1959. Rubie bred long
haired terriers and dachshunds. She collapsed at the RDS Dog show and died 18 Mar 1963
late of The Beeches, Upper Kilmacud Road. Later that day all her five entries won first prize.
After the death of Ruby, William went to live in Newcastle with his daughter Patsy, an
international show jumper. William continued to show dachshunds after Rubie's death
1 Hildagarde Penrose Hildebrand elder daughter married the Rev Stanley Gill,
chaplain to the forces in 1942 at Newcastle upon Tyne. Stanley was the son of
Ernest Stanley Gill of Lemington House, Newcastle upon Tyne.
12 Mabel Millicent Hildebrand youngest child born 20 Feb 1895 at George’s Street, Sligo
attended the Masonic Girl’s School in Dublin. She died 23 Feb 1910.
6 William Hildebrand born circa 1847 in Galway was a post master. He married Lydia
Johnson on 18 Apr 1878 at The Wesleyan Church Ballina. Lydia was the daughter of
Samuel Johnston, Wesleyan Minister. Lydia died 26 April 1884 at High Street Westport.

2 Perry Johnston Hildebrand born 12 Feb 1882 at Westport was a post office worker.
He married Adelaide (Ada) Edge on 14 Sep 1914 at Westport. Adelaide was the
daughter of Robert Edge, a draper of Westport. Ada died 22 Dec 1916 at Westport.
Perry secondly married Mary Crystal Bennett at the Scot’s Church, Queenstown on
28 Nov 1921. Mary was the daughter of Robert Bennett of Queenstown.
William secondly married Martha Honoria Kennedy on 10 Nov 1885. Martha was the
daughter of George Kennedy of Westport. William, a retired postman died 22 Jul 1922 at
Westport.

7 Ellen Hildebrand third daughter born circa 1851 married Alfred Purser on 29 Aug 1872 at
Turlough Church, Castlebar. Alfred was the son of Benjamin Purser and the sister of the
artist Sarah Purser. They lived at Clonmel, then Parsonstown and moved to 12 Palmerston
Park circa 1890 where Ellen died 16 Apr 1925. Alfred was Chief Inspector of National Schools
and died 9 Jan 1925 aged 80. Both were buried at Mount Jerome

2 Elinor Purser born 20 Feb 1880 in Clonmel was a Model School teacher.
3 John Purser born 20 Oct 1884 worked at Birmingham University.
4 Olive Constance Purser born 15 July 1886 at Parsonstown was one of the first women
to be admitted to Trinity College Dublin, entering in the Michaelmas term of 1904.
She was an author, university lecturer and antiquarian. She died 12 Apr 1973.

Nursing Home, late of Oakland Terrace, Terenure.
