Richard Wingfield Hicks born circa 1784 son of Richard Hicks married Ann Eliza Rigney in 1807.
Richard, was a farmer of Kilmacanogue on the Powerscourt Estate. They suffered a major
house fire in 1809 causing 3-4K worth of damage. A new house named Kilmacanogue House
was built in it's place. Richard was insolvent in 1832 and his father Richard died at
Kilmacanogue Cottage in May 1833 aged 90. His mother died on 10 Feb 1837 aged 97. The
house was put up for lease in 1839 and the farm in 1841. Richard died at Beverston, the
residence of his son Richard in 1844.
1 Richard John Hicks baptised at Christchurch, Delgany in 1809. He was involved in the
Cold Blow Lane fictitious votes scandal of 1831 together with his younger brother
Wingfield. Richard of Percy Place and formerly of Wicklow married Maria Figgis of Upper
Dorset Street daughter of William Figgis on 16.05.1835 at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. By
1839 Richard was a paper maker and stationer of 17 Wellington Quay. The paper mill
was located at Loader's Park near Harold's Cross. They lived at Beverston from 1839 to
1845. Richard went into partnership with Hilton papermakers in Lancashire. By 1845
Richard was bankrupt and was ejected from Beverston by Thomas Scully. They lived in
various houses in Dublin including Clonsilla in 1845 before moving to Liverpool in 1848
after the sale of the Harold's Cross mill. Passing himself off as Captain Hicks he applied
through the English courts to be released from bankruptcy in 1849. Maria died at New
Ferry in 1850 and in the census of 1851, Richard was a Widower living with his mother-
in-law Maria Figgis and his five sons in Staffordshire. The case went on from many years
and he built up further debts including school fees. Accusations of fraud were levelled at
him. An arrest warrant was issued but he evaded same by jumping through a widow of
the court house. At the first examination in 1853 he failed to show as he was back in
Ireland and a suit was instituted to remove him from guardianship of his children. His
brother in law Edmund Figgis became the children's guardian by 1857. Richard died from
dropsy at Bonn on 11.10.1869.

4 Arthur Charles Cornwall Hicks born 27.10.1841 at Roebuck and baptised at St Peter’s
Church died in Wales on 26.03.1953.
5 Benjamin Frederick Hicks born 27.05.1843 at Beverston, Mount Anville baptised at
St Peter’s Church was a gunner with the Royal Artillery and 'died someplace about
1862'.

Richard married secondly Margaret Figgis sister of his late wife Maria on 19.04.1854 at
Hackney, Middlesex.
2 Frances Anna Hicks married Edmund Johnston Figgis* brother of Maria and son of William
Figgis on 21.10.1847 at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Edmund died on 24.02.1907 aged 85
years of Glenasmol, Upper Rathmines, Dublin. Edmund was the guardian of his sister
Maria’s children.
3 Wingfield Hicks born circa 1812 was involved in the Cold Blow Lane fictitious votes
scandal of 1831 and moved to London but was back in Ireland by 1836. He died at
Beverston the home of his brother Richard on 25 Jan 1842.
4 William George Hicks born baptised 03.07.1815 was living in Bishopsgate Street in London.
He was an engineer in the service of the East India Company. He was working in Calcutta in
1845.
5 Mary Hicks baptised at Christchurch, Delgany on 16 Feb 1817. She was resident at Beverston,
and married William Blackham of 10 South William Street son of Charles Blackham on
21.07.1845.
6 Robert Hicks baptised at Delgany on 20 Jun 1819.
*Edmond Johnston Figgis of Palmerston Park a Tea Merchant son of Edward Figgis married Emily Edith
Leech daughter of Charles Leech a Barrister of North Great Georges Street on 02.01.1884 at the
Baptist Chapel on Lower Abbey Street.
