Bartholomew Hickey born 14 May 1870 at Ballyboden Village to Bartholomew Hickey, and Marjorie
Carroll. His father was a labourer/gardener. Bartholomew married Margaret Burke, daughter of
Thomas Burke, a cabinet maker and his wife Margaret at Roman Catholic Chapel, Rathmines on
5 Jul 1892. Bartholomew was a tailor living at George's Terrace in Ranelagh and Margaret was a
servant living at Sandymount Avenue. In 1895 he travelled to New York to stay with his uncle

According to Valentine Jackson of Tipperstown House, Bartholomew was a member of the IRB and
during a visit by King Edward to Ireland, hung a black flag outside his house which was removed by
the police. They lived at Glenalbyn Cottages from 1903 to 1910. By 1911 they had six children of
whom five survived. In1916 he was arrested and detained at Arbour Hill from there he was
deported to Wakefield prison in England on 6 May 1916. By 1919 he was living at 29 Carysfort
Avenue and by 1920 was a Poor Law Guardian and on the Urban District Council. Margaret was a
tailoress and died 16 Sep 1930 at 29 Carysfort Avenue and was buried at Deansgrange. Bartholomew
died 26 Dec 1934 at Carysfort Avenue and was buried with his wife.
1 Ellen Hickey born 3 Jul 1894 at 3 York Street, Dublin was working as a domestic servant at
Drummartin Lodge in 1911 for the Whitten family. Ellen married John Edwin Gallagher of
Carysfort Avenue at Blackrock RC Church on 16 Feb 1920. John was a railway clerk and son of
Maurice Gallagher, a railway official.
2 Margaret Hickey born 16 Aug 1896 at Donegan’s Cottages on Monkstown Avenue.
3 Annie Hickey died at Cullen’s Cottages, Newtown Park on 19 Apr 1899 aged ten months and
was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Bartholomew Patrick (BP) Hickey born 3 Apr 1900 at Newtown Park. He was arrested by Crown
Forces in December 1920. He was a pharmaceutical chemist when he married Margaret Hanley
at Dunlaoghaire RC Church on 28 Oct 1936. Margaret was the daughter of Denis J Hanley, a
merchant and was living at Killenaule, Co Tipperary. By 1938 BP had a pharmacy at Rush and
was president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.
5 John Hickey (later Sean Hickey) born 1 Feb 1902 at Stillorgan was a postal official. John was
arrested for offences against The State in 1919 and 1920 and taken to Mountjoy. On both
occasions he was released without charge. John married Alice Day at St John the Baptist Church,
Blackrock on 9 Jul 1923. Alice was living at 31 Temple Road and was the daughter of Edward
Day, a postman. Alice died 23 Mar 1948 at 13 St Vincent’s Park, Blackrock and was buried at
Deansgrange. Sean died on 23 Feb 1968 at Eversfield Nursing Home, Sutton in Surrey. His body
was repatriated and buried at Deansgrange.
1 Nula Hickey died 18 Jan 1930 at Seapoint Avenue.
2 Sean Hickey died 18 Mar 1943 aged ten at St Vincent’s Park, Blackrock and was buried at
Deansgrange.
