William Hickey born circa 1845 son of John Hickey (fl 1885) was a draper. He married
Mary Joseph Kelly, daughter of William Kelly, a merchant of Waterford on 23 April 1882
at Trinity Within Chapel (Waterford Cathedral). He was a partner of Rowe and Hickey,
general drapers and outfitters of 28 North Earl Street from 1877 which was dissolved in
1890. William reopened as Hickey and Company, drapers of 24 North Earl Street and 5
Tyrone Place the same year. William lived at Ardmore in Blackrock, Mary died
4 Dec 1893 of Typhoid Fever aged 36 at Ardmore Blackrock. Her brothers Thomas and
James Kelly TC of Waterford attended her interment at Glasnevin. The premises in North
Earl Street were extended in 1900 to expand the business and to provide sleeping
accommodation for the 130 staff and William had moved to Lucerne on Castle Avenue,
Clontarf.
1 John J Hickey born 13 May 1884 at 14 Spencer Villas Kingstown was educated at
Castleknock College. He succeeded his father in the drapery business. He was a
member of Portmarnock Golf Club. He died a bachelor on 21 Jan 1947 at the Spa
Hotel in Lucan and the funeral was held at St Peter’s Phibsborough.
2 William J Hickey born 12 Dec 1885 at Spencer Villas, Kingstown was educated at
Castleknock College and qualified at a medical practitioner at UCD in 1915. He was
with the RAMC diring WW1 and gained the Military Cross. After the war he joined
P & O Shipping as medical officer followed by some years as a medical officer with
the British Steam Navigations Company. He moved to Bombay where he was the
city’s Principal Medical Officer. He returned to Ireland in 1949 and retired to
Fortwilliam Cottage, Mount Merrion Avenue. He died late of Fortwilliam, at St
Vincent’s Nursing Home on 4 Jun 1954 survived by his daughter. The funeral was
held at Church of St Therese, Mount Merrion.
3 Kathleen Hickey born circa 1886.
4 Thomas Hickey, third son born 1 Jul 1887 at Spencer Villas, Kingstown was educated
at Castleknock College. He was ordained priest in 1917 and joined the staff of
Castleknock College and was Dean of the college until 1922. He left to take up
various other posts and returned to Castleknock College as Bursar in 1926 and
retired in 1952 to St Paul’s College in Sybil Hill Raheny. He died 21 May 1963 aged 75.
5 James Vincent Hickey born 22 Jul 1889 at Ardmore Blackrock, was living at 16 Lower
Fitzwilliam Street when he married Selina (Ina) Egan at Dalkey on 22 Aug 1923. Ina was
the only daughter of the late John J Egan, a merchant of Merton, Dalkey. The couple
lived at Brighton Vale, Monkstown.
6 Matthew Anthony Hickey, fifth and youngest son born on 8 Sep 1891 at Ardmore
Blackrock. He was educated at Castleknock College. Active in the Hickey’s drapery
business with his brother John and James. He married Kathlyn (Kit) Maher, youngest
daughter of Richard Maher, a station Master of Burgh Terrace, Dublin on 19 Nov 1924
at St Paul’s Arran Quay. He was a keen golfer and member of the Heritage Golf Club.
He died 24 Mar 1940 at Cathedral Street and was survived by his wife and two children.
Kit died in 1951 and was buried at Deansgrange.
7 Mary Rose Hickey born 5 Oct 1893 at Ardmore, Blackrock.
He secondly married Margaret Elizabeth Hazelton daughter of Thomas Hazelton, merchant of
Idrone Terrace 17 Nov 1900 at Booterstown Church. William of 23/24 North Earl Street lived in
Clontarf and 75/76 Marlborough Street was a member of Dublin City Council. He died at the
Adelphi Hotel in Harrogate from heart failure late of Lucerne Castle Avenue in Clontarf on
6 Sep 1910 and left 65K in personal estate. He left 5K each to his daughters provided they did
not become nuns in which case they would only get 1K. If a son was a priest or to become a
priest, then he was to receive 5K. After a small bequest to his wife, the residue was to be
shared equally between his sons and he empowered his trustees sons Joseph, William and his
wife Margaret to carry on the business as usual. The business was acquired by Eamon Donnelly
in 1940. Today it is known as Home Focus@ Hickeys.
