Hewat of The Elms, Mount Merrion Avenue and Dawson Court
William Hewat born circa 1801 son of Captain Andrew Hewat (c1750 to 1811) of The Florida Rangers.
He worked for the Provincial Bank of Ireland and married Sarah Duxbury in Edinburgh on
13 Aug 1835. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Duxbury, agent and died 8 Jun 1871 at Mount
Pleasant Square and was buried at Mount Jerome. William died on 21 May 1874 at Weirhill Terrace,
Melrose, Scotland and was interred there. His property at Forge Creek, Gippsland was left to his
son John.
1 John Duxbury Hewat eldest son born 7 Jun 1836 at 1 Park Street, Edinburgh. He married Margaret
Hickey and was living at Forge Creek, Australia by 1860.

2 Thomas Duxbury Hewat second son born 8 Feb 1838 at 1 Park Street, Edinburgh married
Alice Jane Hendric second daughter of Hugh Hendric of Dublin on 11 Sep 1862 at the Scotch
Church on Adelaide Road. Thomas joined Thomas Heiton in his Coal Company. Thomas died
on 21 Jul 1868 aged 30 at Mount Pleasant Square, late of 3 Sydenham Terrace, Dundrum and
Alice died on 9 Sep 1868 at Bloomfield House aged 24 years the home of her father. His
children then came under the guardianship of Willian Senior and William junior.

3 William Hewat, born circa 1844 was a bankers clerk living at 41 Grosvenor Road in 1875. He
married Agnes Anna Borrowes at 5 Alma Terrace, Seapoint on 6 Oct 1875 by ML according to
the discipline of the Presbyterian Church. Agnes was the daughter of Samuel Higgins
Burrowes. They lived firstly at Shamrock Lodge, Rathmines and later in Monkstown. William,
a merchant of Westmoreland Street had his marriage dissolved in 1887 after his wife left him in
1885 for George Henry Johnston Lyttle, a farmer. Agnes had a son ( Percy Edward Burrowes
Lyttle) on 3 May 1886 at Manchester and later moved to Algoa Bay in South Africa with George
Lyttle. William had no children with Agnes.
William secondly married Eliza Lambe Pollock on 12 Jun 1889 at Oakshawhill, Paisley. Eliza was
the daughter of Alexander Pollock JP, provost & chief magistrate banker & yarn merchant and
his wife Ursula McAllister of Paisley. William was the MD of Messrs Thomas Heiton & Co Ltd
by 1886 and they lived at the Elms from 1896 to 1908. He was appointed a magistrate in 1898.
William Hewat JP, Iron and Coal merchant died at The Elms, Mount Merrion Avenue, Blackrock
on 6 Dec 1900 and was buried at Mount Jerome. He suffered from Myelitis and underwent
treatment in both Dublin and London. He left 58K in personal estate. His nephew William
Hewat, son of his brother Thomas was left the residue of the estate and became a director of
Thomas Heiton & Co. A memorial tablet was erected at St Andrew's Church on Mount Merrion
Avenue of which he was a founder and benefactor of both the church and the college.
In 1901 Eliza was living at the Elms and her two unmarried sisters Ursulla McAllister Pollock
and Margaret Patison Pollock were visiting. Her nephew Alexander and niece Mary Boyd
Pollock were also staying at the house. Eliza was a founder member of the ‘Donnybrook Fair’
held to raise funds for St Andrews College in 1908 and preformed the opening ceremony. She
was secretary of the Zenana Missionary and travelled to India, Syria and South Africa. By 1911
Eliza was living at Dawson Court alone and was chair of the Women’s Association for Foreign
Missions. She was living in Bristol by 1921. Eliza died at 21 Cavendish Road, Westbury on Trym,
Bristol aged 75 on 3 Feb 1935 and her funeral was held at Canford. She left 4K in personal estate
and her husband’s nephew William was her executor.
