John Hawkins born circa 1777. John had offices at Henrietta Street from 1806. John
and his son Anthony were proctors of the Prerogative and Ecclesiastical Courts and were
secretaries of faculties to the primate. John's wife Margaret died at Henrietta Street circa
1 Jan 1832 aged 58 and was buried at St Peter’s. The head registrar for Ireland was
William Stuart who resided in London was paid 1.5K per annum. John and Anthony were
his deputies in Dublin. A court case of 1842 alluded to improprieties in office and that
certain documents had been allowed to be copied within the office. John is appears has
gone blind and his inexperienced son Anthony is in charge. The testamentary jurisdiction
was transferred to the new Court of Probate in 1858 and Anthony was awarded £600
compensation.
1 Maria Elizabeth Hawkins, eldest daughter born circa 1805 died a spinster on
14 Sep 1868 at Bonchurch, Isle of Wight formerly of Leopardstown. Probate to
Elizabeth Reid of 39 Upper Gloucester Street.
2 Anthony Hawkins born circa 1807 was a deputy register in the Prerogative Court
in 1842. He retired in 1857 on full salary (about 1K pa). He lived at Leopardstown
House after the death of his father and won numerous awards for his livestock
and crops. He died 14 Aug 1866 aged 59 at 17 Grove End Road, St John’s Wood,
Middlesex. Probate to Richard Smith, (Record keeper of HM Court of Probate) of
Ballybrack and Dr John Frederick Knipe of Beneavin House, Finglas. He left 1500
in personal estate in England and 25K in Ireland.
3 Margaret Frances Hawkins married Charles Gonzales at Berne at the British
Legation on the 1 Nov 1849. She died in Rome on 2 Feb 1859.
John, a widower secondly married Letitia Margaret Clarke, a widow on 12 Jan 1833 by ML
at St Michan’s, Dublin. From 1835 to 1837 John was on the Committee for the Dublin &
Drogheda Railway, the committee rooms were at 4 Henrietta Street and John and Letitia
lived at Mount Sackville from 1833 to 1838. In 1841 John and Anthony were contacts for
the sale of Lord Castlecootes estate at Leopardstown. John purchased the estate and it
was run as a model farm with an Agricultural College. John a patron of agriculture who
made significant sacrifices for its advancement died at his residence of 5 Henrietta Street
on 1 Mar 1846. After his death 103 private Wills were found in his office and lodged with
the Public Records Office of Ireland. Letitia Hawkins, widow of John Hawkins of
Leopardstown died 10 Nov 1869 aged 72 at 88 Pembroke Road.
