Robert Harkness married Jane Law, fourth daughter of the Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells,
George Henry Law and his wife Jane Adeane. Robert was appointed to the Vicarage of
Stowey in 1825 and moved to East Brent in Somerset in 1837. Robert died 27 Apr 1839
and Jane died 17 Jan 1843 at Weston-super-Mare. Both were buried at the Law family vault
on the south side of the Lady Chapel in Wells Cathedral. A floor slab remembers the family.
1 William Harkness eldest son born 1824 In Somerset was baptised 30 Apr 1824 at
Marylebone Church. He attended Eton and Cambridge, took Holy orders and was
ordained priest in 1847. He married Sara Anne at St Mary's Church, Dublin on
16 Apr 1853. Sara born circa 1825 was the second daughter of Dr John Peebles, MD,
FRCSI of North Frederick Street, Dublin and Ann Bellingham of Castlebellingham.
William owned land at Garryfine and Temple Athea, Co Limerick and would make yearly
visits. His land agent was Robert Ivers of Castle Ivers. It appears he was quite respectful to
his tenants, reducing rents and in hardship cases giving receipts for rent when no
money was handed over. He also didn't 'charge on tithes. He was curate of Congresbury
from 1849 to 1856 and then curate of Kingsdon from 1859 to 1857. He was appointed
Rector of Windscombe, Somerset in 1859. He died 17 Oct 1863 at Ventnor on the Isle of
Wight. The landed estate was left to his only son. Sara returned to Dublin and was living
at Monkstown in 1865 when her eldest daughter died. She visited schools on her property
in Athea in 1872, where she arranged a prize giving, sports day and banquet for the
children of the schools with the help of her own children. In 1891 she was in Cumberland
living with her daughter Maud. She lived at Brookvale in Stillorgan from 1899 to 1901.
Sara died 24 Oct 1901 at Brookvale and left £800 in personal estate.
1 William Henry Harkness born February 1854 in Somerset as educated at Eton and
after at Trinity College Dublin. William was a Captain in the 1st Dragoon Guards
and the owner of over 4323 acres valued at £1432 in 1876 and had been
appointed a JP. His regiment was posted to South Africa in 1879 and his mother
took over the management of the Limerick estate. He send back instructions to
reduce tenants rents and to deal with individual cases of hardship. In 1886 he
left his residence in Carrigbeg and moved to America but had returned by 1887.
He married Lucy Emily Kiggell daughter of Major Lancelot John Kiggell of Cahara,
Glin, Co Limerick at St Anne's Church, Dublin on 19 Feb 1901. William died at
Bournemouth on 10 Mar 1931.
2 Jane Charlotte, eldest daughter born 1855 at Axbridge, Somerset died 8 Jan 1865
aged 9 at Monkstown.
3 Grace Harkness, second daughter born 8 Feb 1857 at Axbridge, Somerset married
her cousin Thomas Eudo Bellingham, sixth son of William Bellingham of Co Kildare
at Trinity Church, San Francisco on 15 Mar 1882.
1 William Eudo Bellingham born 11 Dec 1878.
4 Maud Bellingham Harkness, third daughter born 1860 in Kerry was living in
Whitehaven Cumberland with her mother in 1891 and at Brookvale in 1901. She died
a spinster on 25 Jul 1940 at 48 Albert Road, Sandycove on 25 Jul 1940.
5 Florence Law born 1862 at Axbridge, Somerset died a spinster at 48 Albert Road,
Sandycove on 25 Jan 1945.
2 George Law Harkness born 5 May 1825 at Wells married Frances Elizabeth D'Alton, daughter
of Major Albert D'Alton and granddaughter of Edward, Count D'Alton of the Holy Roman
Empire on 14 Nov 1849 at St Andrew's Church. Clifton, Gloucestershire.
