John Stewart married Harriett Louisa Hamill
John Stewart of Dominic Street married Harriet Louisa Hamill. John was a barrister and
the son of Rev Henry Stewart, DD, Rector of Loughgilly, Co Armagh and his wife Anna
Matilda Hamill. He was nephew of the Right Hon Sir John Stewart, Bart, and of Mrs
Humphrey Nixon. Harriet was the daughter and co-heiress of Hans Mark Hamill of
Ballyatwood, Co Down. John was later deputy Remembrancer of the Court of the
Exchequer.
1 John Thomas Stewart only child born 17 Feb 1819 at Ballyatwood. He graduated
Trinity College Dublin and was called to the Bar in 1846. He married Marion
Hudson on 20.06.1844 at Down Cathedral. Marion was the daughter of the late
Edward Hudson of Loughbrickland, Co Down and Gardiner's Place, Dublin. They
lived at Beverston from 1850 to 1852 and by 1861 the family were living at Fulwood
Park, Cheltenham, England. In 1865 John and his issue was granted by Royal
licence the name Hamill to be used in addition to and before that of Stewart. John
died 10.06.1866 at Cheltenham and Marion died at Kensington 04.12.1904 aged 87.
Both were repatriated and buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Lieut Col John Donald Hamill Stewart born 15.10.1845 at 16 Lr Dominick
Street baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. John of the 11th Hussars
accompanied General Gordon to Khartoum and was murdered on the
Nile on 18.09.1884.
2 Mary Frances Anne Stewart born 14.06.1847 of 16 Lr Dominick Street
baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Mary married Frederick Kevau
Izod of Tipperary son of Lorenzo Izod on 13.03.1880 at Monkstown
Parish Church. Witness Henry E Hamill Stewart.
3 Henry Edward Hamill Stewart born 08.06.1848 at 16 Lr Dominick Street
baptised at St Mary’s, Church, Dublin. Henry married Geraldine Mary
Arbuthnot elder daughter of the Rev Robert Keith Arbuthnot on
03.09.1896 at All Saints Church, Battersea. Witness Harriet Louise
Hamill-Stewart.
4 Harriet Louisa Hamill-Stewart born 08.09.1849 at 16 Lr Dominick Street,
baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Harriet died unmarried on
28.12.1919 aged 69 years of Hartington Place, Eastbourne. Probate to
her sister Ada Letitia Hamill-Stewart.
5 Ada Letitia Hamill-Stewart born 08.05.1851 of 16 Lr Dominick Street
baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Ada died unmarried on 01.02.1922
of 9 Old Orchard Road, Eastbourne.
6 Hans Mark Hamill-Stewart a barrister at law born 22.07.1852 at 16 Lr
Dominick Street baptised at St Mary’s Church, Dublin. Hans died on
02.02.1892 aged 40 years at 20 Jermyn Street, London. Probate to
Lionel McMahon of County Tyrone.
