Hamerton Family of Belgrove (UCD)
Whereas information has been given upon oath, that in the night of the 14th of March last, John
Hamerton, of Orchardstown, in the County of Tipperary, a farmer, accompanied with about 30
other persons, mostly armed with guns and pistols, particularly by Mary Bradshaw, otherwise
Hamerton, of Mine in said County, sister of the said John Hamerton, did enter the dwelling house
of John Millet, of Knockura, in the said County, Gentleman, and from thence did feloniously take
and carry away, Mary Millet, only daughter of the said John Millet, by force, and without her
consent with an intent that the said John Hamerton should marry or defile the said Mary Millet.
Now we, the Lord Lieutenant and Council, being fully determined to have said offenders brought
to speedy punishment, do hereby publish and declare, that if any person or persons, shall on
or before the 20th of Oct. next take and apprehend the said John Hamerton and Mary Bradshaw,
or either of them, and lodge either of them in any of his Majesty’s gaols in this Kingdom, such
person or persons so apprehending him or her, shall receive as a reward the sum of £50 for each
of the said persons so apprehended as aforesaid.
And we do hereby further publish and declare, that, if any person or persons (except the said John
Hamerton and Mary Bradshaw) do within the time aforesaid, so that he, she, or they be
apprehended and convicted thereof, such person or persons so discovering , shall receive a
reward the sum of £20 for each and every of the three first persons so apprehended and
convicted as aforesaid. And we strictly charge and command all justices of the peace, mayors,
sheriffs, bailiffs, constables, and all other of his Majesty’s officers, civil and military, to use their
utmost endeavours to have the said offenders apprehended.

Orchardstown
John Hamerton married Mary Millett daughter of John Millet of Knockuragh otherwise
Prospect Hall, Tipperary after he had abducted her in 1869.
1 General John Millet Hamerton born circa 1778 a British Army Officer of the 44th Regiment
of Foot. John served in the Peninsular Wars and the Battle of Waterloo. Wounded, he was
left for dead and was saved by Sergeant Ryan who brought him for medical help. Returning
home he was nominated a Companion of the Bath and given a Waterloo Medal. John married
Mrs Eleanor Landy daughter of J Sullivan of Kingstown circa 28.08.1830 at Booterstown
Church and they were at Belgrove in 1846 when their youngest child died. John was
promoted to Colonel in 1848. He died 27.01.1855 at Orchardstown and was buried in the
family vault at Rathronan and Ellena died on 02.06.1858 also at Orchardstown.
1 John Millet Hamerton eldest son born 27.06.1831 at Kingstown and died circa
03.03.1847 aged 15 years at Elm Grove, Ranelagh and is buried at Glasnevin.
2 Marianne Josephine L Hamerton 2nd daughter born circa 1833 died on
13.04.1853 aged 21 years at Orchardstown and is buried at Glasnevin with her
brother Mathew.
3 Susan Anna Olivia Hamerton baptised 02.04.1835 at Rathmines married
Lieutenant Thomas Hill Lucas son of Davis Lucas on 27.01.1861 at the Parish
Church of New Chapel, Clonmel.
4 Georgina Helena Hamerton baptised in 1837 at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral and died
on 25.01.1847 aged 10 years at Elm Grove, Ranelagh and is buried with her
brother Albert who died 2 months later in Glasnevin.
5 Matthew Millett Hamerton 2nd son baptised 06.11.1839 educated at Trinity
College and married Josephine Eliza Parker daughter of Joseph Parker MD of
Molesworth Street on 15.04.1868 at St Anne’s Church, Dublin. Matthew became
Lord of the Manor of Orchardstown on his father's death. Mathew died on
24.08.1919 at Rathronan, Clonmel and Josephine died on 23.05.1925 aged 81
years and is buried with her husband in the Hamerton enclosure.
1 Helena Bessie Hamerton born 01.02.1870 at Orchardstown married Sinclair
Alexander Robinson a Widower and Confectioner of 53 Capel Street son of
William Robinson on 31.10.1900 at St Mary’s Parish Church, Dublin. Sinclair
was originally married to Annie Gray in 1893.
2 John Joseph Thomas Hamerton born 14.07.1871 at Orchardstown and died
unmarried on 30.04.1938 aged 66 years at Auburn House, Clonmel.
3 Matthew Hamerton born 09.05.1873 at Orchardstown and died unmarried
on 21.08.1956 aged 83 years at Auburn House, Clonmel.
4 Josephine Alice Hamerton born 07.08.1875 at Orchardstown and died
unmarried on 24.02.1965 aged 89 years at Medical Missionaries Hospital,
Clonmel
5 Susan Hamerton born 30.08.1875 at Orchardstown and died of Whooping
Cough on 01.09.1879 aged 12 months at Orchardstown.
6 Albert Hamerton born 29.05.1880 at Orchardstown.
7 Robert Hamerton born 19.03.1882 at Orchardstown.
6 Albert Henry Millet Hamerton youngest son born circa 1841 died on 28.11.1846
aged 5 years at Belgrove and is buried at Glasnevin.
