Walter Bagenal Gurley second son of Thomas Gurley and Elizabeth McDonagh born circa 1800.
His father was a solicitor, and registrar for the Leighlin District in Carlow. They were a Church of
Ireland family living at Belville. His older sister Hannah converted to Catholicism and was one of
the first teachers at the Presentation convent in Stradbally. His older brother Thomas immigrated
to Canada. Walter married Lucinda Whitcroft in 1829 at St Peters, Dublin. Walter was the owner of
lands in Carlow but they were heavily mortgaged. He lived at Parsons Green, Kilmacud from 1849
to 1852. Lucinda died in 1839. Walter Gurly was the grandfather of George Bernard Shaw.
1 Lucinda Elizabeth Gurly born 6 Oct 1830 was brought up by her spinster Aunt Ellen
Whitcroft after her mother died. She lived at Stillorgan and married George Carr
Shaw, son of Bernard Shaw at St Peter’s Church 17 Jun 1852. George was a clerk in
the Four Courts and later became a partner of George Clibborn of Jervis Street.
Lucinda had £1200 in government stock and she registered a deed/marriage
settlement ensuring that the interest on this stock would be paid to her each year
and her husband would not have access to it. Lucinda’s music teacher was George
John Lee, she joined his amateur musical society and she sang at the theatre royal
and the gaiety in his operas. Lee went to London and shortly after that she left her
husband and moved to London in 1873, she sent for her daughters later that year.
He son George junior joined her in 1876. George died in 1885 and Lucinda died
19 Feb 1913 at Saint Pancras, London.
1 Lucinda Francis Shaw born 26 Mar 1853 actress, musical comedy and light
opera singer married Charles Robert Butterfield at St John’s Church London on
17 Dec 1887 and divorced in 1909. They had no children.
2 Elinor Agnes Shaw born 7 Jul 1855 at Synge Street died 27 Mar 1876 of
consumption at Ventnor, Isle of Wight.
3 George Bernard Shaw, playwright and socialist born 26 Jul 1856 at Synge Street
married Charlotte Frances Payne-Townsend, daughter of Horace
Payne-Townshend of Rosscarbery and Mary Susanna Kirby whom he had met
through the Fabian Society. Charlotte died in 1943 and George died on
2 Nov 1950 at Ayot St Lawrence, Herts. They had no children.
2 Walter John Gurly born 14 Aug 1835 at Highfield, Rathfarnham. He married Emily Jane
Walton on 19 Apr 1875 at Manhattan. He was an MD and died at Essex on 30 Aug 1899.
Walter secondly married Elizabeth Ann Clarke of Hanover Carlow, second daughter of Simeon and
Catherine Clarke of Hanover, Carlow on the 25 May 1852 at St Peters Dublin. They were due to get
married on the 17 May 1852, and invitations were sent to friends and family but Walter was
arrested when buying gloves in Pim's Store on the morning of the wedding and was taken to the
Marshalsea. He transpired that his brother in law had registered a suit against him for the
non-repayment in full of a loan of 4K given on the marriage of his sister, Lucinda Whitcroft in 1839.
Some years later Walter took his ex-brother in law to court as it transpired that the amount left
owing was only 13 shillings and the minimum amount for a charge like this to be granted was £20.
He lost the case on the basis that he was thought to be fleeing the country even though this
transpired to be his honeymoon. Walter died 20 Dec 1885 and Elizabeth died at Athy Road on
24 Aug 1892 aged 62.
3 Catherine Clarke Gurly born 4 Apr 1853 baptised in Carlow died a spinster on
15 Mar 1914 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
4 Arabella Sophia Gurly born circa 1856 in Mayo married John Duke Gilmore on
22 Feb 1881 at Oughterard.
5 Georgina Henrietta Gurly born circa 1858 in Mayo died a spinster on 2 Aug 1911.
6 Charlotte Olivia Gurly born circa 1860 married Edward Rogers son of Eames Rogers
on 28 Feb 1894 at St Anne’s Carlow. Edward was clerk to the County Council of
Carlow.
1 Eames Bagenal Paris Rogers born 12 Mar 1896 at Athy Street, Carlow
immigrated to America.
2 Sabina Geraldine Rogers born 23 Dec 1897 died young.
3 Dorothy Olivia Rogers born 11 Aug 1899 at Athy Road died young.
4 Georgina Elizabeth Rogers born 30 May 1902 at Athy Road, Carlow married
Edward Norman Meredith on 30 Oct 1923 at St Mary Church Carlow and
moved to Dublin.
7 Constance Ann Gurly born circa 1862 in Galway married William Walter Hamilton and
emigrated to America.
