James Glazebrook born circa 1850 son of Richard Glazebrook. James was a farmer of Ballinahinch
and married Jane Southern, at Newcastle on 27 Jan 1882. Jane was the daughter of Richard Southern
and was living on the Earl of Fitzwilliam’s estate at Ballyvolan Wood near Newtownmountkennedy
from 1875. James is variously described as farmer, shepherd and coachman and in 1886 Jane was
working as a domestic servant. By 1901 there were living at Stillorgan and James is working as a herd.
1 Elizabeth Jane Glazebrook born 24 Jan 1883 at Ballyvolan, Newcastle, Co Wicklow.
1 Howard Glazebrook born 29 Apr 1903 at Kilgobbin. Present at the the birth was Eliza
Southern. He was baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church on 19 Jul 1903, the register
notes that he was ‘not born in wedlock’. In 1910 Howard was found wandering in
Stepaside with 'no settled abode and no means of subsistence' and was committed to
the Meath Industrial School in Blackrock until he was sixteen. In 1917 the school was
taken over by the British Army to serve as a hospital and the boys were transferred to
Balmoral Industrial School in Belfast. It it believed that Howard stayed in Northern
Ireland, married and had at least three children.
2 Sarah Glazebrook born 13 Jul 1886 at Tomacork, Co Wicklow died at Rathwade, Carlow on
17 Jun 1893.
James’ parents are thought to be Richard Glazebrook of Ballitore, Co Kildare and Elizabeth Mason of
Glasnamullen near Calary in County Wicklow who married at Calary C of I Church on 19 Feb 1846. If that
is the case, he had a sister Eliza Jane born 1848 and brother William James born circa 1851. It appears
this family were living with Elizabeth's father, James Mason in 1851.
Baptism records for Calary were lost in 1922.
A James Glazebrook, labourer and widower was living in Stepaside in 1911 was admitted to the
workhouse on a number of occasions on the basis of being sick and having pains in 1912/3.
