John Malcolm Gillies son of Archibald Gillies, publisher of the Aberdeen Journal and Mary Robertson
was born circa 1848 at Dundee, Forfarshire (Angus), Scotland. Mary was the daughter of Thomas
and Jane Robertson. He grew up at Surrey Street, Govan, Hutchesonton, Lanarkshire. His mother
died while he was quite young and his aunt Jane Robertson acted as the family housekeeper. John
was a journalist for the Aberdeen Journal and moved to London to work for the Freeman’s journal.
He married Alice Maud Nash in 1875 in St Pancras, London and was transferred to Dublin in 1878
as manager of the Freeman’s Journal and the Belfast Morning News. He was appointed manager of
the Daily Express in 1900. John was a member of the Bee Keeper Association from 1886 and later its
chairman. He was author of Stepping stones to Bee Keeping which became recommended reading
for people seeking expert certificates in apiculture. He travelled the country giving lectures on bee
keeping. He was vice president of the Irish Amateur Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association in
1890 and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a director of Dunlop from its
formation in 1889. In 1896 he was one of the first car owners having imported a German Benz.
By 1903 he was lecturer on bee keeping under the Department of Agriculture and Technical
Instruction. John and his wife were Presbyterian but most of their children became Catholic. John
died 2 Jan 1913 at Cluny, Clontarf and was buried at Kilbarrack. Alice died 23 Sep 1916 at Cluny
House, Clontarf and was buried with her husband.
1 Jane Josephine Malcolm (Jeannie) Gillies born 23 Aug 1876 at 24 Mount Pleasant Road,
Hornsey, Middlesex, England. She married Matthew Joseph Hynes in Bangor in 1894 and
was baptised as an adult at Donnybrook Roman Catholic Church on 22 Jul 1897. Matthew
was a librarian and civil servant. Jeannie died from TB at 27 Apr 1910 at 59 Hollybank Road,
Clontarf, Mathew and the children were living with his parents in law in 1911.

He was an engineer and married Sophia M Bouvie from Germany on 21 May 1899 at
Dublin Registrar’s Office. Sophia was the daughter of Arnold Bouvie. Archibald died
8 Aug 1950 at 4 Eagle Hill Avenue, Terenure and Sophia died 1 Jan 1963 aged 86 at same
place. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.

3 Patrick James Thomas Malcolm (Thomas) Gillies born 5 Mar 1879 at 57 Rathgar Road,
Dublin. He was baptised at Donnybrook Roman Catholic Church on 22 Oct 1896. Patrick
was an electrical engineer and married Sarah Byrne at Rathmines RC Church on
21 Nov 1912. Sarah was the daughter of Michael Byrne, a farmer. Thomas took part in
the 1916 rising, was interned and secured his release under general amnesty. He died a
widower at Rathdrum on 9 Apr 1965.
4 Cathleen Lavinia Gillies born 21 Jun 1881 at 57 Rathgar Road, Dublin was baptised at
Donnybrook Roman Catholic Church on 22 Jul 1897. She joined the Gaelic League and
married Patrick Moore on 24 Jun 1924 at St Lawrence O’Toole Church, Dublin. Patrick was
a civil servant, involved with the Howth Gun running and a member of the GPO Garrison
in 1916 for which is deported to Frongoch. Cathleen died 6 Nov 1947 at East Wall Road
and Patrick died on 28 May 1950.
5 Nora Maggie Mary Malcolm Gillies born 12 Aug 1883 at 2 Clapham Villas, Terenure was
baptised at Donnybrook Roman Catholic Church on 22 Jul 1897. She married James
Daly on 16 May 1910 at Drumcondra RC Church. James was a fitter/plumber of Belview
Terrace, Dollumount and the son of James Daly. They lived at Wharf Road in East Wall,
Dublin. Nora joined the Gaelic League and was a founding member of the Fairview
branch of Cumann na mBan in 1914. On Easter Monday 1916 Nora O’Daly reported to
St Stephen's Green garrison which was under the command of Michael Mallin and
Countess Markievicz. She was imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol and later wrote an
account of her time there. During the Civil War she was a judge in the Sinn Féin courts
in Fairview/Ballybough District. She supported the Treaty of 1921. She died at 'Clooncoora',
Jobstown on 10 May 1943 and was buried at Saggart. She is remembered on the ‘77 Women
commemoration quilt ‘ created by The Yarn Project.

Gillies. She married Patrick (O) Daly 16 May 1910 at Drumcondra RC Church. Daisy and
Patrick were living with Archibald Gillies in 1911. Patrick was a carpenter and the son of
James Daly. Margaret joined the Gaelic League. Margaret died on 31 Mar 1919 at the
Hospice, Harold’s Cross late of 5 Marino Avenue, Fairview.

Nora died 11 Jun 1936 and Paddy died on 16 Jan 1957. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
8 John Robertson Brown Nash Gillies born 24 Sep 1889 at Runnymede, Dundrum was a
horticulturist in 1911. He died a bachelor at East Wall Road on 30 Sep 1971 and was buried
at Kilbarrack with his parents.
