James Robert Garrett from Carroll County, Tennessee moved to the Indian territory when he
was quite young and farmed there. He married Elizabeth Greer 17 Mar 1875 the niece of
Chief T M Buffington who was the last chief of the Cherokee Nation. He was a Mason and
Knight of Pythias and she was a member of the Eastern Star chapter. James was a clerk of
the Going Snake District. Elizabeth died 25 May 1902 and was buried at Tahlequah cemetery
in Cherokee County and James died in 1918 and was buried with his wife.
1 Robert Bruce Garrett, aka Oochalata was born at Old Baptist Mission near
Westonville, Indian Territory on 2 Dec 1876. He graduated from the male seminary
at Tahlequah and became the principal of the Cherokee Orphan Asylum at Saline,
Oklahoma before becoming superintendent of Pryor High School. He married
Cherokee (Cherrie) Dora Edmondson at Craig, Oklahoma on 8 Oct 1903 and they
lived at Pryor, Mayes, Oklahoma where he was involved in farms, farm loans and
real estate. His sister in law Bula Edmondson had married Richard ‘Boss’ Croker
who owned and lived at Glencairn. He visited her in 1920, before moving to live at
Glencairn in 1922 after the death of Richard Croker. The family travelled back to the
USA frequently. Robert died 19 Nov 1947 and was buried at Stillwater, Payne County.
Cherrie died 23 Oct 1972 and was buried with her husband and daughter.
1 Kathleen Butler Garrett born in Oklahoma born 22 Jan 1906 lived at Glencairn
from 1922. She became the first American woman to be admitted to The Bar
of Irish Free State on 25 Jun 1930 and was also a writer of children’s books. She
died 19 Jul 1956 and was buried at Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma.
2 Tom B Garrett, born circa 1892 was living with his brother James in 1910 and married
Spray Elizabeth Hikens in Okmulgee, Oklahoma in 1920.
