William Pugh Gardner born circa 1809 in Hampshire son of James Anthony Gardner and
Sarah Pugh. William married Jane World of Lurgan on 24.08.1829 at the Church of St Martin's,
Portadown, Armagh on 24.08.1829. He was a Collector of Customs for Leith and was
transferred to the Port of Dublin in 1855. They lived at Thornhill until William was transferred
to Liverpool Port in 1865. Jane died 17.03.1881 at Hoelands, Shaftsbury Road, Southsea.
William retired in 1882 and died at St Helier's, Shaftsbury Road, the home of his son in law
John Grant, on 26.08.1883 at Southsea, Hampshire.
1 Allan Geary William Gardner born circa 1836 in Cumberland. He was with HM 81st
Regiment and attained the rank of captain. He died at Bramley Surrey on
09.12.1874.
2 Eliza Jane Gardner eldest daughter born circa 1843 at Wells, Norfolk married John
Frederick George Grant a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy on 20.12.1864 at Stillorgan
Parish Church. John was the son of John Grant a Captain in the Royal Navy. By
1879 John was captain of the 'Malabar' and they were living at St Helier's Shaftsbury
Road, Southsea. He was appointed to HMS 'Terror', a 16-gun iron screw floating
battery based in Bermuda in1884 and retired in 1894. The family were living at
Williton, Somerset in 1891 and in Malvern in 1901. He was advanced to the rank of
admiral on the retired list on 25.01.1902. Eliza died 20.09.1910 at Villa, Barnards
Green, Great Malvern. John died on 04.02.1916 at The Gables, West Malvern.
1 Jane Gertrude Kent Grant only daughter born 1872 at Rock Ferry, Cheshire
living with her parents in 1891. She married John James Cowan in 1897 at
Dunster.
3 Gertrude Mary Gardner born circa 1844 married William Milner Moger at St Peters in
the Wirral on 05.09.1867. Gertrude died a widow on 10.12.1916.
4 Horatio Nelson Gardner born circa 1846. As youngest son he married Letitia Louisa
Cowell at St Jude’s Southsea on 26.08.1880. Letitia was the only daughter of the late
Lieut Col Cowell of the 2nd West India Regiment. He died in 1929 in Portsmouth.
5 Alice Blanch Gardner youngest daughter born circa 1846 died unmarried on 23.07.1874
at Hastings.
