George Francis Gamble born 21 Jun 1837 at London, Middlesex son of Frederick Gamble of St
George's Square. He was in the Royal Marine Light Infantry and attained the rank of major in
the Royal Marines. He married Florence Johnston at St Georges', Hanover Square, London on
1 Aug 1866. Florence was the second surviving daughter of Charles Bolton Johnston and
Charlotte Johnston of Mount Jerome and Tudor Lodge.
Florence's father was secretary to the Director and Registrar of the Mount Jerome Cemetery.
Florence accompanied her husband on his various postings abroad. The Major took over the
running of the Mount Jerome Cemetery on the death of his father in law. The couple separated
for a time in 1877 after George accused Florence of flirting with The Rev W H Frazer, who was
employed to carry out funerals at the cemetery. This came to light when the Rev Frazer
brought a case of libel and slander against the Major. George died 22 Feb 1912 at Mount
Jerome House and left 4k in personal estate. Florence died 28 Feb 1921. Both are interred at
Mount Jerome.
1 Charles Gamble born 18 Aug 1867 at Ascension Island graduated Trinity College and
became a solicitor and partner in the firm of Carruthers & Gamble of Fleet Street, Dublin.
He married Ida Gertrude King on 22 Jan 1889 at Christchurch, Kingstown. Ida was the
youngest of the five daughters of John Wingfield King, DL of Sligo. They lived at various
addresses around Rathgar. In 1905 Charles applied and was granted a divorce absolute
by an Act of Parliament on the grounds that his wife was intimate with Charles George
Guy. It was thought that Gertrude was living with him in Canada. He subsequently
applied for damages for criminal conversation and was awarded £3000. In 1906 Charles’
son Vyvian was kidnapped from his school, Woodtown Park in Rathfarnham. It was
discovered that Gertrude had taken the child; she was arrested and taken into custody.
Gertrude secondly married John Harrison Middleton, third son of Alfred Hancock
Middleton on 2 Jun 1906 and was mother to a son named John.
1 Florence Wingfield (Mimi) Gamble born 30 Jul 1889 at Bellview Avenue. She married
Christopher Ward Pemberton on 8 Jun 1909 at Harold's Cross. Christopher was a
civil servant living at Cabra Park and the son of Henry Pemberton, a builder. In
1911 Christopher was a clerk to the Board of Works and they were living at S
Sandford. Chris, a retired asst architect with the Board of Works died at Green
Road, Blackrock on 23 Feb 1953 aged 68 and is buried at Deansgrange.
1 Doreen Elizabeth Kathleen Pemberton born 8 May 1910 at 25 Cherryfield
Avenue, Sandford.
2 Frederick Charles Gamble born 24 Sep 1891 at Bellvilla Avenue was District
Commissioner of the East Africa Protectorate. He married Ethel Melian Frizell on
26 Sep 1919 at Mombasa. Ethel was the daughter of R W Bruchfield Frizell of 44th
Street, New York and the niece of Mrs Herbert Robertson of Huntington Castle, Co
Carlow (aka Helen Durdin). He was appointed Acting Judge in HM Supreme Court
of Kenya in 1934 and Judge in 1935.

2 Michael Richard Gamble 21 Jul 1925 at Nairobi.
3 Vyvyan Webber Gamble younger son born 21 Nov 1896 at Windsor Road was a
lieutenant in the Royal Munster Fusiliers. He was later a colonial farmer and died
a bachelor at Knocksinna on Easter Sunday 16 Apr 1933 after a long illness. He
is buried at Mount Jerome.
Charles was engaged to a Miss Hill, daughter of the Rev Hill who was headmaster and
proprietor of Woodtown Park school in Rathfarnham where his sons attended but
instead married his housekeeper; Hephzibah Mary (Hephsie) Prichard, at all Saint’s
Church, Norfolk Square on 31 Mar 1908. Hephsie was the daughter of Charles Prichard
of Keymer, Sussex. Charles was a member of the Zoological Society and the County
Kildare Archaeological Society. He was the author of ‘Solicitors in Ireland 1607 – 1901’
and was on the standing committee of the RCB and president of the Law Society in 1921.
He was also also a governor of King's Hospital. They lived at Killiney Lodge from 1912 to
1918 and had moved to Knocksinna by 1920. Charles died 9 Feb 1934 at Merrion
Nursing Home late of Knocksinna and is buried at Mount Jerome. The Archbishop of
Dublin officiated at his funeral. Charles left nearly 16k in personal estate and each of
his office staff staff that had been in his employ for ten years or more, were gifted 6
months salary. Knocksinna was put up for sale a couple of weeks after his death.
Hephsie died 8 Apr 1941 at Fieldgate, Ditchling, Sussex aged 79.
2 George Frederick Gamble born 1 Oct 1868 at Brockhurst, Gosport worked with his father
at Mount Jerome. He drowned while bathing in the River Dovey in South Wales on
16 Jul 1898. He was buried at Mount Jerome and G Bernard Shaw is listed as a cousin and
one of the mourners.
3 Florence Gamble born 20 Nov 1876 baptised at Harold's Cross.
4 Alfred Gamble born 11 Feb 1880 baptised at Harold's Cross married Annie Caroline Violet
Rooke at St Mary’s Donnybrook on 19 Jul 1912. Violet was the third daughter of Thomas
Robert Rooke of Brighton Square, Dublin and died at Sefton Place, Liverpool on 2 Oct 1939.
Alfred died at Liverpool on 12 Jul 1961.
1 George Alfred Henry Gamble born 28 Apr 1912 at Lower Baggot Street.
5 Cléonice Gamble born 14 Sep 1881 baptised at Harolds's Cross married Captain William
James Norman Cooke-Collis of the Royal Irish Rifles at Harold’s Cross Parish Church on
30 Jan 1906. William James was living at of 42 Castle Street, Dundalk, and was the son of
Col William Cooke-Collis of Castle Cooke, Kilworth, Cork.* William joined the army in 1900
and served throughout WW1. He attained the rank of major general. James as he was
known by his friends, became ADC to the King and was knighted in 1937. Sir W J N
Cooke-Collis, KCB, CMG, DSO formerly of Tilford Way, Farnham and 21 Cockspur Street,
London died at The Lodge, Dunmurry, Co Antrim on 13 Apr 1941. He left personal estate in
Ireland of just under 3K. Cléonice died at Northampton in 1968.
1 Catherine Patricia Cooke-Collis born 10 Mar 1907 married William Thomas Rhys
Wingfield only son of Major William Wingfield of Strettington House, Chichester at Holy
Trinity Church, Brompton on 5 Jul 1936.
