Joseph Farley born circa 1820 married Anna Maria Doyle on 26 Apr 1844 at Francis Street
Church, Parish of St Nicholas Without. Joseph was a Victualler with a shop at 8 South
Great Georges Street, opposite Pim’s Department store. He was contracted to supply the
meat for the Crimean banquet in 1856 which took place in Scovell's Tobacco Bond, Stack A
which is now the chq building. He took over Higgins shop on Merrion Avenue in 1858 and
supplied meat to the surrounding areas. Joseph died at Georges Street in November 1865.
Anna took over the shops and by 1868 was offering a delivery service from Merrion Avenue
out to Monkstown and the surrounding areas. She was also supplying restaurants and hotels
with meat. She closed the Merrion Avenue shop in 1875 and opened a shop at Newtown
Avenue, Blackrock opposite the Town Hall. She died at Montebello, Newtown Avenue on
12 Oct 1891 aged 72 and was buried at Glasnevin. She left 7K in personal estate.
1 Thomas Farley born 1850 and baptised the same year at St Andrew’s, Westland Row. He
was a meat purveyor and farmer. He married Ellen Carton on 16 Jan 1877 at St Joseph’s,
Berkley Street and lived at Montebello on Newtown Avenue. Ellie, his wife was the
daughter of Denis Carton of Halston Street, a successful Inn keeper and fowl broker of the
Linen ward. Her father was given a testimonial in 1846 for providing water from his
premises to the poor for six years when water was undrinkable in Dublin. His firm was a
forerunner of Manor farms which is the largest chicken processing plant in Ireland. Ellen
died in on 14 Oct 1887. Her sister was married to Joseph Downes, a baker of North Earl
Street. Ellie didn't live to see her brother in law knighted in 1900 before the Queens visit
and elevated to the title of ‘Lord Barmbrack' by Dublin Wits.

married Edward Kennedy, a solicitor of Beechmount on Booterstown Roman
Catholic Church on 17 Sep 1906.
6 Thomas Joseph Farley born 31 Dec 1885 at Newtown Avenue was educated at
Belvedere and Clongowes. He was appointed solicitor in 1910 and had offices at
Nassau Street before moving to College Green. He married Norah Butterly,
daughter of Francis Butterly of Homefarm, Drumcondra on 11 Jun 1913 at Francis
Xavier Church. His uncle Charles officiated. He put the Victualler business up for
sale in 1914 and they moved to America in 1927. He died 17 Jan 1966 at Cherry
Hound, Ashbourne Road.
7 Edward Mary born 1 Oct 1887 at Montebello married Mabel H Todd, daughter of
James Todd of Mount Merrion Avenue at Booterstown Roman Catholic Church on
20 Sep 1933. They lived at 7 Crofton Terrace and Cambridge Road, Rathmines.
Edward died 11 Feb 1965 at Rathmines.
Thomas secondly married Catherine (Kate) Butterly, daughter of James Butterly of Grange,
Baldoyle on 24 Jul 1889 at St Xavier Church. His brother Charles officiated at the ceremony.
Thomas had a stud farm at Cherry Hound on the Ashbourne Road and bred racehorses.
He died 14 Sep 1912 at Doncaster where he had been for a few days holiday. His body was
repatriated and buried at Glasnevin. Catherine, late Ardmore, Blackrock who had been
living with her stepson Edward at Crofton Terrace died at Harold’s Cross Hospital on
27 Apr 1952.

3 Mary Catherine Farley, only daughter born circa 1855 died aged 17 at 8 South Great George’s
Street on 31 Jul1872 and was buried in Glasnevin leaving personal estate of £485.
4 Charles Patrick Farley born circa 1859 became a Jesuit Priest and was based at Gardiner
Street. He died in August 1938 aged 80.
