John Fahey a teacher from Glenatallan, Loughrea, Co Galway married Maria Jones from England.
John was a national school teacher as was his brother Thomas. After John’s death, Maria moved
in with her brother in law Thomas who was a bachelor and also had a farm.
1 Francis Patrick (Frank) Fahy (sometimes Fahey) AKA Proinsias O Farthaig born 23 May 1879
at Glenatallan, Loughrea, Co Galway. He was educated at Mungret College, Limerick, and
UCG and graduated BA and H Dip in education and double diploma in science. He was also
called to the Irish bar in 1931. He was a teacher and taught at CBS Tralee, and later at St
Vincent's College, Castleknock, Dublin from 1906 to 1921. He married Hanna Maria (Anna)
Barton from, Clogherbrian, Tralee at St John’s Church Tralee on 8 Jan 1907. Anna was the
daughter of Daniel Barton and Julia Barrett, farmers. She was a metal artist and a member
of Cumann na mBan. They were living at Haroldville Avenue in Rialto in 1911. Frank was a
close friend of Padraig Pearse, Arthur Griffith and Thomas McDonagh and was one of the
founders of the Irish Volunteers and became Captain of ‘C’ Company, First Battalion, Dublin
Brigade. During the 1916 rising he was in command of the Four Courts under Battalion
Commander Edward Daly. He was sentenced to ten years penal servitude but released in
June 1917. He was again arrested in the ‘German Plot’ round up the following year. He was
deported without trial to Reading jail and was released in 1919. While there, he taught Irish
to other prisoners. He was an opponent of the Treaty. He was member of the Dail from its
inception having been elected for South Galway and an Irish language advocate. He was
Secretary of the Gaelic League in 1922 until 1927. Frank was elected Ceann Comhairle of
Dail Eireann in 1932 and retired in 1951.
They lived at Bellevue on the Upper Kilmacud Road from 1936 to 1947. Frank died
12 Jul 1953 at Tudor Lodge, 12 Park Drive, Ranelagh and was buried at Deansgrange. Anna
died on 25 Sep 1974 aged 88 at Kilmacud House, Stillorgan and was buried with her
husband. They had no children.

6 Professor Samuel Joseph Fahey born 1885 at Moore Street, Loughrea married Alice Molloy at
Ballina Cathedral on 19 Jun 1912. He was a prominent member of Sinn Fein was arrested at
his residence where he taught at Tipperary Monastery School in 1919 and interned in Cork.
He was a teacher in Clongoweswood College from 1918 to 1925 and also taught Irish in the
evening at Naas Technical College. A Gaelic scholar, he taught at Blackrock College until his
death. He died at Hume Street Hospital, late of 8 Rock Road on 2 Feb 1939.
