Faber family of Annefield, Dundrum
Thomas Faber born circa 1729, vicar of Calverley married Hannah Dixon on 13 May 1769
at St John’s, Leeds. Hannah was the eldest daughter of John Dixon, Alderman of Leeds.
Hannah died in June 1770 at York where she had gone to seek advice from a doctor.
Thomas secondly married Ann Travers of Crofton on 31 Dec 1772. Anne was the
daughter of Rev David Travers. Ann died on 9 Aug 1806 aged 63. Thomas died in
November 1821.
1 George Stanley Faber eldest son baptised at Calverley on 22 Nov 1773. He
graduated MA from Lincoln College, Oxford and appointed a fellow in 1801. He
took Holy orders and married Eliza Sophia Scott Waring on 31 May 1803 at
Marylebone Church, London. Eliza was the daughter of John Scott Waring of Ince
in Cheshire. He vacated his fellowship, and for the next two years acted as his
father's curate at Calverley. He was presented with the living of Longnewton in
1811 and remained there for 21 years until he received the 'Mastership of
Sherburn Hospital in 1832. He was a topologist and prolific writer, his most
famous tracts being the ‘The Origin of Pagan Idolatry’ and ‘A dissertation on the
prophecies, that have been fulfilled, are now fulfilling, or will hereafter be fulfilled,
relative……’. He was a prominent critic of the Oxford movement and is considered
one of the most influential Anglican theologians of the nineteenth century. He was
also a Neologiser and coined the word fabulize. Eliza died at Sherburn House on
28 Nov 1851 aged 76. George died on 27 Jan 1854.
1 William Raikes Faber born May 1806 at Stockton. He was in service with the
HEIC, an ensign in 1825, lieutenant in 1828 and captain in 1835. He had an
MA from Oxford University in 1836. He married 21 year old Mary Anne
Woodroffe on 28 Oct 1847 at Winchester. Mary Anne was the daughter of
Rev T Woodroffe, AM, Canon of Winchester and Rector of St Maurice. He
sailed to Calcutta in 1854 and was in command of the 53rd Regiment during
the Mutiny, including the battle of Cawnpore in 1857, and in the affair at
Seraighat. He attained the rank of colonel with the 71st in 1854 and major
general in 1866. He lived at Annefield, Dundrum from 1864 to 1868 and
later at Slough near Windsor. He was made a companion of the Order of
the Bath in 1875 and general retired in 1877. William died 24 Jun 1879 at
Staplegrove Lodge, Somerset, his wife was his sole executrix. Grace Bone
was their faithful servant for over 20 years and died in 1882. Mary Anne died
16 Apr 1908 at Bournemouth aged 82.
1 Reginald Stanley Faber born 1848 in Durham graduated from Oxford.
He married Elizabeth Vaughan in 1873. They were living in Middlesex
in 1901 with their two daughters. Reginald was Hon Sec of the
Huguenot Society in 1889. He died on 18 Dec 1908 and left 18K in
personal estate.
2 Charles Waring Faber baptised 22 Feb 1805 in Calverley was visiting his
brother William at Little Comberton, Pershore, Worcestershire in 1871. He
was a barrister and died in 1873. He left 30K in personal estates to be divided
between is brother William and nephew Reginald.
2 Caroline Faber baptised at Calverley 16 Feb 1775.
3 Richard Faber baptised at Calverley on 2 Feb 1781.
4 Thomas Henry Faber baptised at Calverley on 1 Jul 1779 married Elizabeth (Betty)
Atkinson. He was appointed secretary to Dr Barrington, Bishop of Durham and
moved with his family to Bishop Auckland.
1 Francis Atkinson Faber baptised at Bradford on 27 Oct 1804. He was a fellow
and tutor of Magdalen College. He accepted the living at Saunderton in 1844
and married Jessie Cust on 20 Aug 1845 at Princes Risborough, Bucks. He
suffered ill health and was unable to undertake the duties of the parish. He
died on 6 May 1876.
1 Henry Mitford Faber youngest son born 1851 took Holy orders. He
married Florence Ellen Colt in 1882 and died in 1917.
1 Geoffrey Cust Faber born 1889 was the founder of Faber & Faber
Publishing.
2 Thomas Henry Faber a barrister of Stockton on Tees.
3 Charles Edward Faber third son baptised on 15 May 1807 at Bradford. He
married Georgiana Bird on 6 Feb 1830 at Madras. Captain Faber was
appointed the superintending engineer of Singapore in 1844 and served in
that role until 1850. Telok Blangah Hill was renamed Mount Faber after him.
He attained the rank of general by 1863 and major general by 1866. Charles
died on the 7 Nov 1868. Georgiana died 6 Jun 1877 at 6 Pitville Parade,
Cheltenham aged 67.
1 Caroline Bird Faber second daughter married Rev John Blanchard MA
of Bridlington Quay, Yorks on 11 Dec 1866 at St Mary’s Church,
Cheltenham. Rev John was the curate of Carnaby. Her brother Arthur
officiated.
2 Rev Arthur Henry Faber, eldest surviving son born 29 Feb 1832. He
was a fellow of New College Oxford and a first-class cricketer. He
married Mary Sophia Faber on 19 Jul 1864 at Northaw parish church.
Mary was the eldest daughter of Charles Wilson Faber of Northaw
House, Herts. He was headmaster of Malvern College in 1866. Mary
died in 1876 and he secondly married Mary Elizabeth Isabella
MacCarthy 11 Jul 1898 at Doncaster. Mary was the daughter of Francis
Bernard Selwood Tresilian MacCarthy, of Kinsale, County Cork. Arthur
died 27 Nov 1910. No issue found.
3 Frederic Dickinson Faber, baptised 15 Aug 1841 at Ridge Green, Surrey.
He was assistant commissary of police in the services of the EHIC. He
took his own life and died 14 Nov 1864 at Raypore, East Indies.
4 Emily Bessy Faber born 27 Apr 1847 in Singapore living with her mother
in 1871.
4 Caroline Faber baptised 30 May 1809 at Calverley.
5 Frederick William Faber baptised 12 Aug 1814 at Calverley near Bradford.
He graduated Oxford in 1832 and took Holy orders in 1839. He was rector at
Elton, Huntingdonshire. He was a poet and friend of Wordsworth. In 1845 he
converted to Catholicism. Father Faber died at the Oratory, Broughton on
26 Sep 1863. He was the writer of many hymns including Faith of our Fathers
and The Pilgrims of the Night.
