John Joseph Esmonde second child was born on 27 Jan 1862 in Drominagh, Borrisokane,
Co Tipperary, son of James Esmonde and Caroline Sugrue. He married Rosina
Magennis on 7 May 1888. Rosina was the daughter of John Magennis. The family were
living at Forest Road, Walthamstow, West Ham in 1901. Rosina died in London on
6 Aug 1901. John Joseph was a GP practicing in Yorkshire and returned to Ireland in
1910.
1 Rosemary Esmonde born circa 1889 in Kensington < London educated at the
Convent of the Sacred Heart, Preston Rural, Steyning, Sussex. Rosemary died
a spinster on 15 Apr 1966 late of Greycot, Brennanstown Park, Carrickmines.
2 Caroline Josephine Esmonde born 23 Mar 1890 at Kensington baptised at Most
Holy Trinity Bermondsey was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart,
Preston Rural, Steyning, Sussex. She was a clerk and died a spinster on
10 Feb 1933 at 49 Lower Leeson Street. Later of 26 Herbert Place.
3 John Lymbrick Esmonde born 15 Dec 1893 was educated in Germany, Belgium,
and at Clongowes Wood College. He was an apprentice engineer at Harland
and Wolfe and served with The Royal Dublin Fusiliers. In 1915 he was elected
for Tipperary North to succeed his father as a Nationalist MP. He later studied
at Trinity College and was admitted King's Inns, Dublin and called to the bar in
1921. He married Eleanor (Lillie) Fitzharris on 4 Sep 1922 Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada. Eleanor was the daughter of Laurence Fitzharris, wine and
spirit merchant of Ringsend, Dublin, and Monread, Co Kildare and his wife May
Moran. The ancestral home of the Edmonde family was Ballynastragh House,
Gorey, Co Wexford and was burned down in 1923 during the civil war. The
family applied for compensation but it was 1937 and John Esmonde who
arranged for a rebuild on the site. He succeeded as the 14th Baronet in 1943
when his cousin Sir Lawrence Grattan Esmonde died. He served as a Fine Gael
TD for Wexford in 1937, 1938 and 1943. He was re-elected as a TD for Wexford
at the 1948. In July 1950, he resigned from Fine Gael. They lived at Merlyn Park,
Merrion Road in 1938 and Ashfield, Stillorgan Road from 1952 - 1953. In 1954
he defended Michael Manning, the last person to be hanged for murder. He
died on 6 Jul 1958 at the Burlington Clinic, Dublin late of 26 The Rise, Mount
Merrion. His funeral mass was held at Therese’s Mount Merrion and he was
buried at Deansgrange. Lady Eleanor died 23 Oct 1982 in Sandyford and was
buried with her husband. No issue found.
4 Frances Mary Esmonde born circa 1895 at Pontesbury, Shropshire was
educated at Mount Anville, Dundrum. She was a garage proprietress and
married Edward Smithers at Holy Cross Church, Dundrum on 18 Apr 1934.
Edward was a motor mechanic and the son of Richard Smithers, a motor driver.
5 Geoffrey Esmonde born 1897 Pontesbury, Shropshire was educated at
Clongowes Wood College. He was killed in action in WW1 serving with the 4th
Tyneside Irish of the Northumberland Fusiliers on 9 Oct 1916 in France. He is
commemorated at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
6 Anthony Charles Esmonde youngest son born 18 Jan 1899 at Ashlett House,
Church Stretton, Shropshire. He was educated in Germany, at Clongowes
Wood College, and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He qualified in
1921 as served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy from 1925 to 1925. He later
practiced in Nenagh, Co Tipperary and Gorey, Co Wexford. He was an Irish Fine
Gael politician, medical doctor and farmer. He married his second cousin
Eithne Moira Grattan Esmonde on 9 Jun 1927 at St James’ Church, Spanish
Place, London. Eithne was the youngest child of Sir Thomas Esmonde, 11th
Baronet. They had three sons and three daughters. Anthony died 17 Mar 1981
in a Wexford nursing home.
John Joseph Secondly married Eily Josephine O’Sullivan on 24 Jul 1904. John Joseph served
as a captain in the RAMC during the war. He died from pneumonia on 17 Apr 1915 and
was buried in his family vault in Terryglass, County Tipperary.
7 Owen James Esmonde 15 May 1905 in England. He married Eira Margaret
Antonia MacKenie on 19 Feb 1938 at Farborborough. He put Drominagh House
in Borrisokane up for sale in 1946.
8 Donal G Esmonde born 27 Jun 1906 in England became a priest. He was
ordained in 1932 and appointed to the staff of St Joseph’s Missionary College,
Freshford, Co Kilkenny. In 1960 he was in Mosili, Kenya and involved in the
building of a new church in memory to his late brother Eugene.
9 John Witham (Witham) Esmonde born 13 Aug 1907 in England married Aileen
Mary Harold-Barry on 29 Oct 1940. Aileen was the daughter of Harold Philip
Harold-Barry and Helen Frances Mary Riddell. He joined the Royal Navy was
awarded the DSO was his part in the attack of the Bismark. He died
28 Mar 1983.
10 James Bartholomew (Bat) Esmonde (twin) born 1 Mar 1909 in England was a
mining engineer and was involved in the Wicklow Mining Company.
11 Eugene Kingsmill Esmonde (twin) born 1 Mar 1909. He was a pilot and Lieut
Commander with the Royal Navy. He was awarded the DSO and was killed the
following day on 12 Feb 1942 when his plane, a swordfish 1 crashed into the sea
after attacking the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during Operation Fuller (Channel
Dash) and was awarded the VC posthumously.
12 Mary Carmel Esmonde born 13 Mar 1912 married Dermot St John Gogarty on
10 Jul 1935 at Terryglass Church, Borrisokane. Dermot was an architect and son
of Dr Oliver St John Gogarty, Senator. Her brother Donal officiated at the
marriage ceremony.
13 Patrick Esmonde born 12 Dec 1914 at Drominagh, Borisokane was a doctor and
served during WWII. He later worked in Uganda.
