Charles Blake born 1811 son of Charles Blake. He married Juliana Elizabeth Dunkin on
26 Oct 1843 at Annaghdown Church, Galway. Juliana was the eldest daughter of Lieutenant
Colonel John Johnstone Durkin of the Royal Artillery, 18th Royal Irish Regiment. Juliana’s
uncle the Rev Richard Marlay officiated. His father was a burgess of Tuam and had a
brewery at the end of Shop Street which according to Lewis in 1837, ‘was producing four
or five thousand barrels of malt liquor a year, plus about 600 quarters of malt.’ Charles
and his brother James ran the flour mills beside the brewery. His mother died in 1835
and his father died in 1849. Charles was vice chair of the Tuam board of Guardians and
died 28 Feb 1878 at Bridge House, his son John the informant. Charles had lands in
Galway and Mayo. He left the lands at Knock to his son Charles Henry. Juliana died on
2 May 1880 at Bridge House, Tuam.
1 Charles Henry Blake eldest son born December 1846 married Rose Georgina Blake
18 Aug 1875 in Limerick. Rose was the youngest daughter of Walter Blake of
Meelick. They had nine children of whom seven survived in 1911. Charles died at
Bridge House, Tuam on 1 Dec 1899, the informant his brother John. Rose died
22 Jul 1916.

in 1940.

5 Florence Edith Blake born 2 Sep 1883 at Bridge House, Tuam died a spinster
in 1949.
6 Walter Bruce Blake born 21 Aug 1884 at Bridge House, Tuam died an infant
on 7 Sep 1884.
7 Geraldine Henriette Clare Blake born 6 Jul 1887 at Bridge House, Tuam.
8 Marjorie Pauline Bruce Blake born 29 Jun 1889 at Bridge House, Tuam.
9 Henry St John Blake born 18 Sep 1891 at Bridge House, Tuam.
2 John Dunkin Blake born circa 1850 at Tuam was the second. He inherited lands at
Killeen, Galway on the death of his father. He married Alice Mary Leonard on
12 Sep 1878 at St Jarlath’s Cathedral, Tuam. Alice was the youngest daughter of
Dominic Blake Leonard of the Mall House, Tuam. John was Catholic landlord and
had 400 acres of tenanted land around Tuam and they lived at Brooklawn House.
They had five children of whom three survived in 1911. He was shot in the neck
and back while walking alone to Mass in June 1920. He survived but was seriously
ill for a number of weeks. He had just given 35 acres of land to his tenants for grazing.
He was shot at again and wounded in the leg in 1922. Alice died 23 April 1925 at
Brooklawn. John died 5 Jan 1926 and was buried at Kilcreevanty Burial Ground.
1 Charles Dunkin Blake born 5 Sep 1879 at Brooklawn, Tuam, Galway. He was
working for the Sun Assurance Co in 1901 and took a sea voyage in 1905
where he met Augusta. Charles of Kileen Castle married Augusta (Doodie)
Preston nee Hay, the widow of Dean Preston of Lyndhurst on 7 Oct 1905 at
the Brompton Oratory, London. They afterwards held a large reception at
Batt’s Hotel in Dover Street. Shortly after their marriage they visited Charles'
parents at Brooklawn and were welcomed by neighbours and tenants of
Tuam with bonfires and laurel arches spanning the roads. That evening a
reception for the bride and groom and all local people was held in Brooklawn.
They lived at Murrough House, Galway and moved to Roebuck house in the
autumn of 1906. Augusta died 9 Feb 1907 at Roebuck House aged 36 and
was buried at Kilcreevanty Graveyard, Tuam. Augusta left 14K in personal
estate. Charles took a court case to have administration granted to himself
rather than her brother. A settlement was reached.
Charles secondly married Flora M Barcley at St Michael’s Church, Kingstown
on 16 Feb 1909. Flora was the only daughter of William Barcley and
Margaret Ferguson of Logie-Moir, Udny, Aberdeenshire. Flora was the
grand-daughter of the Duke of Ganton. They spent their honeymoon in
Glendalough. By 1910 they were living at Lytham, England, and Charles was
working for the Scottish Insurance Company. He enlisted in 1914 but was
rejected on medical grounds. He was bankrupt in 1925. By 1934, his wife
and invalid son were living at Guildford and he was charged with being in
arrears of child maintenance charges to a Kathleen Elizabeth Pemberton, a
Lytham girl with a ten year old child. Charles died in May 1936.
1 Jack Barclay Blake born 3 Dec 1909 in Cuckfield, Sussex joined
the British Royal Navy.
2 Manus Leonard Blake second son born 19 Jul 1882 at Brooklawn, Tuam
attended the Lytham Hall School in Oxford. He was an insurance
inspector for the Scottish Insurance Corporation. He married Mary
Edwards Sutcliffe in 1909 and died 4 Oct 1936 at Lytham.

3 Alice Mary Blake born 2 Sep 1884 at Brooklawn, Tuam died 20 Mar 1886
at Brooklawn.
4 Violet Juliana Blake born 14 Feb 1886 at Brooklawn, Tuam died aged 14
days at Brooklawn.
5 Edith Mary Blake born 2 Jun 1887 at Brooklawn married James O’Connell
Sullivan on 16 Jun 1924 at the Pro Cathedral. James was secretary of the
Farmer’s Union and the son of James O’Sullivan, a brewer of Lackan Hall, Co
Kilkenny. He was also a great grandson of Daniel O’Connell.
3 Maud Blake fl 1863.
4 Richard Marley Blake, third son born circa 1854 was an MD and married Anne
(Nannie) Hartigan on 30 Jan 1879. Nannie was the only surviving daughter of
Michael Hartigan, an auctioneer of 6 Georges Street, Limerick. They lived at
Ravensdale, Dundalk and had at least six children. Richard died in 1939.
