William Harvey Ducros born circa 1778 at Ship Street, son of Samuel Peter Ducros and Mary Dawson
He was made Freeman of the City of Dublin in 1804 in the Guild of Smiths. He is noted in the street
directories as a brazier & japanner of 9 Werburgh Street from 1818 to 1822 and from 1824 was
working as a tin manufacturer and lamp maker from Capel Street. He died in September 1836 and
was buried at Clontarf. Harriet Maria died in 1853 and was buried at Clontarf.
1 William Du Cros eldest son married Elizabeth Murphy, eldest daughter of Peter Murphy of
Kilcullen, Co Kildare on 25 Dec 1840 at St Anne’s, Belfast and afterwards in St Patrick’s Chapel.
William died before 1875.

1 William Harvey (Harvey) du Cros born 19 June 1846 at 93 Middle Abbey Street was
educated at King's Hospital. He became a bookkeeper in Brooks Thomas and married
Annie Jane Roy on 20 May 1868 at the Registrar’s Office Dublin. Annie was a confectioner
and the daughter of James Roy, land steward. He became secretary of the Irish
Commercial Travellers' Union in 1869, and was a paper merchant of Northumberland
House. By the time he reached his late-twenties Harvey had formed his six sons into a
team of racing cyclists called The Invincibles. The team rode on solid tyred penny farthing
bicycles. In the late 1870’s Harvey won a number of Irish boxing championships. In the
1880’s he was still playing rugby and captained Bective for 8 years. He was the founder of
the pneumatic tyre industry supporting the innovations of John Boyd Dunlop and he mass
produced Dunlop's tyres. This came about when two of his sons were beaten in a cycle
race by a little considered competitor using John Boyd Dunlop's basic pneumatic tyres. He
was made president of the Irish Cyclists' Association. In 1891 production was moved from
Dublin to Coventry when Dublin Corporation took action against the company for the
smells issuing from the rubber manufacturing plant. In 1896, Harvey sold that company
to a group of people including Ernest T Hooley for 3 million pounds. The business was
then floated to the public as Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in May 1896 and by 1904
employed 3000 workers. That same year Harvey purchased Cornbury Park from Lord
Churchill. Annie died on 5 May 1899 aged 57 at Cornbury Park, Oxon.

Taney was Irish Cycling champion in 1886. He joined his father in Dublin's Pneumatic
Tyre and Booth's Cycle Agency. He married Eliza Davison in London in 1893. He died
12 May 1917 at Ladbrook House, Southampton.
2 Alfred James (Alf) du Cros born 10 Dec 1868 in Dundrum baptised at Taney was an
amateur Trick Rider and became an Irish cycling champion. He joined his father and
brothers in Dublin's Pneumatic Tyre and Booth's Cycle Agency. He was chairman of
the Swift Cycle Company and director of a number of oil companies. He married
Louisa Pemberton Hincks from New Orleans in December 1901 and died in 1946.
3 Arthur Philip du Cros born at 24 Liverpool Road (Portobello Road) on 31 Jan 1871. He
was educated in Dublin and joined the Civil Service. In 1892 he married Maude
Gooding and they had two children. He was elected MP for Hasting in 1908 after his
father retired as MP and lived in Levetleigh House in St Leonards on Sea until it was
burned down in 1913 by suffragettes. He was created Baronet in 1916. He divorced
in 1923 and retired from Dunlop in 1928. He married Florence May Walton King in
Paris in 1928 and thirdly married Mary Louise Joan Beaumont. Arthur died on
28 Oct 1955 at Oxley, he was interred at Finstock and left 28K in personal estate.
4 Harvey du Cros junior born 15 Mar 1872 at Longwood Avenue baptised at St Peter’s.
He scaled Snowdon in a motor car in 1904. He had an affair with Mrs Dorothy Florence
(Betty) Barret in 1914 which led to her divorce. He founded and was MD of the Swift
Cycle Company and also founded the Yellow Cab Company. He secondly married
Dorothy Attewell nee Barrett in 1916. He died 1 Nov 1928 in Maidenhead and was
interred at Finstock.

5 William Ernest (Willie) du Cros fifth son born 5 Mar 1874 at Longwood Avenue married
Anna Maria Reuss in 1905 and Mary Anastasia Murphy in 1936. He died in a London
nursing Home in September 1937.

6 George Herbert du Cros 8 Sep 1875 at Peach Villa, Sandymount baptised at St
Matthew’s Ringsend became a motor car racer. He died in 1946.

Harvey secondly married Florence Ellen Gibbings of Devon in Paris in 1903. He was elected in
the 1906 general election as Member of Parliament for Hastings in East Sussex but retired in
1908 due to ill health. He was conferred by King of Spain with the Royal Order of Isabella the
Catholic in 1910. They lived at Levetleigh House in St Leonards on Sea, he transferred the lease
to his son Arthur and it was burnt down by suffragettes in 1913. Harvey moved back to Dublin
in 1918 and died 21 Dec 1918 at Inniscorrig Castle on Coliemore Road, Dalkey and was buried
at the family vault at Finstock, Oxfordshire. He left 42K in personal estate.

and Fanny died there on 4 Jan 1903 aged 61. For a number of years, the Du Cros's and the Dunlop's
of Talbot House were close neighbours. Edward died 15 Jun 1907 at Timolin Vicarage, Kildare, the
residence of his son in law, late of South Hill, Blackrock. Admin granted at London to Harvey du Cros.
He left £600 in personal estate.
