Thomas Downes born circa 1840 to William Downes and May Quigley married Jane Lacey,
daughter of Phelim Lacy and Bridget Brennan at Kilquade Parish Church on 15 Jul 1846. Jane
and her parents were living on the Altidore estate in Kilquade and Thomas gave his address
as Glendara and his parents address as Mayo. Thomas was a gardener and worked at
Athavallie possibly on the Lynch-Blosse estate where his first two children were born. Jane
died at Derry, Co Laois 23 Sep 1880 from consumption.

5 William Downes, born 7 May 1876 at Windmill Hill, Maryboro, Co Laoise. He was a coachman
and was aged 19 when he married Margaret Byrne from Avoca, daughter of Patrick Byrne, a
herd and Anne Doyle at Holy Cross Church, Dundrum on 8 Oct 1894. Both gave an address of
Enderly, a house on Sweetmount Avenue in Dundrum. In February 1905, a 2 acre garden with
cottage at St Kevin's Park was advertised for lease. William and his family moved in and he
worked as a market gardener. Margaret died at the Mater Hospital aged 84 on 22 Jan 1854 and
her funeral service was held at St Laurence's Church, Kilmacud. William died 6 Mar 1962 at 22
Grantham Street, the home of his son John. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Anne Mary Josephine (Annie) Downes born 19 Jan 1895 at Gledswood, Windy Arbour
was an apprentice dressmaker in 1911 married John O'Connor, of Temple Road, Blackrock,
son of James O'Connor, a painter, at Kilmacud Church on 30 Jul 1919.
2 Thomas Downes born 18 Dec 1896 at Temple Hill, Kimmage Road, Dublin enlisted in the
Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1914 and arrived at Gallipoli in July 1915. He was killed in action
on 7 Aug 1915 at Gallipoli.
3 Patrick Gerard Downes born 10 Feb 1899 at Ardavon, Upper Rathgar enlisted in 1914.
He survived the war and was demobbed in 1919. He married Bridget Geraghty, a
laundress from Main Street, Dundrum at the Church of the Holy Cross, Dundrum on
13 Apr 1920.
4 Eileen Mary Downes born 22 Jan 1901 at The Harbour, Naas, Co Kildare married Edward
Saunders of Adelaide Buildings, Blackrock, son of William Saunders, at Kilmacud Church
on 26 Sep 1932. Edward, aged 60, a knitwear technician died on 8 Dec 1966 at St Anne's
Upper Kilmacud Road and was buried at Deansgrange.
5 William Anthony Downes born 5 Oct 1905 at Stillorgan joined the Civil Service. He married
fellow civil servant Margaret Frances Bowman at St Andrews, Westland Row on 12 Dec 1930.
Margaret was the daughter of Thomas F Bowman, a national school teacher.
6 James Downes born 11 Nov 1909 at St Kevin's Park (Redesdale), Stillorgan was educated
at Stillorgan NS. In 1925 he was awarded a scholarship to the De Bear School in Grafton
Street. He moved to England.
7 Maureen Downes born 17 May 1912 at Stillorgan married James N V O'Leary at York in
England in 1932.
8 John Benedict Downes born 5 Sep 1914 at St Kevin's Park, Stillorgan.
6 Anne Downes born 3 Jul 1878 at Derry, Clonalee, Co Laois - possibly the estate of John Wrafter, JP.

Thomas Downes born circa 1855 in County Dublin to William Downes. A gardener, he secondly
married Roseanna Byrne from County Louth, daughter of Thomas Byrne, a herd, at Sandymount
Chapel on 29 Jun 1884. Roseanna was working as a servant at Aylesbury House and Thomas was living
at 2 White's Lane. They were living at O'Briens cottages near Haddington Road in 1901 and in 1911 at
O'Brien Place. Thomas died aged 71 on 28 Jun 1911 at 6 O'Brien Place and Rose died 16 Nov 1932 at
8 O'Brien Place aged 69.
1 Bridget Downes born circa 1885 died of croup at Farm Hill, Dundrum on 20 Oct 1891.
2 Thomas Downes born 16 Apr 1887 at 16 South Richmond Street.
3 Patrick Downes born 8 Jul 1888 at the Back Lodge, Grove Park, Rathmines.
4 John Joseph Downes born 15 Dec 1890 at Farm Hill, Dundrum enlisted under the name John Byrne,
his Will lists his mother Rose as beneficiary. A private with the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, he
was killed in action on 9 May 1915 in France and his effects were sent to his mother at 6 O'Brien
Place.
5 Rose Christina Downes born 2 Jan 1893 at Farm Hill, Dundrum died a spinster on 14 Jun 1964
at 59A Sepentine Avenue age 70.
6 Kathleen Downes born 19 Jul 1896 at 19 Turners Cottages, Ballsbridge.
