John Doherty born circa 1849 at Camlin, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal son of Francis Doherty.
John Doherty a cashier married Mary Combes Henwood on 15 Apr 1868 at The Registrar’s
Office Dublin. Mary was the daughter of John Henwood, a civil engineer. Mary died after
childbirth on 19 Dec 1874 at 36 Serpentine Avenue, Sandymount.
1 Mary Ada Doherty born 1 Jan 1869 at Tritonville Avenue, Sandymount married
Herbert Sands on 28 Mar 1891 at St Alban’s Church, Teddington. Mary died in New
Jersey in 1892.
2 Emily Alice Doherty born 5 Jul 1873 at 36 Serpentine Avenue, Sandymount. She married
Augustus Pinto Leite in 1901. Emily died in Canterbury on 13 Mar 1959.
3 Francis Doherty born 10 Dec 1874 at 36 Serpentine Avenue. Francis died 18 Dec 1874
at Sandymount.
John was a commercial traveller and a widower and secondly married Charlotte Isabel
Clarke at Holy Trinity Church, Cork on 28 Mar 1876. Charlotte was the daughter of Walter
Clarke of Denis Quay, Kinsale. He was a partner in James Walker & Co, Paper mills in 1878.
He was a paper merchant in 1881. He was a manufacturer and lived at Garnaville from
1882 to 1886 and they were in Teddington by 1888. He was as JP and chairman of the
Teddington District Council and by 1907 the family were living at Longford Lodge,
Hampton on Thames, Middlesex and John was a master printer and they were still living
there in 1921. Charlotte died in April 1924 and John died on 6 Aug 1929. His printing
business was taken over by two of his daughters but was liquidated in 1933.
4 Norah Doherty youngest daughter born 5 Mar 1878 at 13 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock.
She married Charles Richard Dacre Fox on 8 May 1909. Both were members of the
Zephyr Dramatic Society in Hampton. Charles was the eldest son of Richard Dacre Fox,
MRCS Eng. Norah was a prominent member of the Women's Social and Political Union
and served as general secretary. Norah joined Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst in
supporting the British cause in the first world war and was imprisoned three times in
Holloway Prison in 1914 for ‘acts of terrorism’ and was forcible fed. She received a
WSPU Hunger Strike Medal with three bars. Norah separated from her husband and
had a child with Dudley Elam in 1922. She and Dudley joined the British Union of Fascists
and Norah fell under Oswald Mosely’s spell. She was sent to Holloway prison in 1940 and
released in 1942. Dudley died in 1948 and Norah died on 2 Mar 1961.
5 John Doherty born 13 Mar 1879 at 13 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock living with his
parents in 1891. He was a member of the Zephyr Dramatic Society and appeared in
numerous plays with his sister Norah. He was a master printer and married Kathleen
Lacy on 12 Oct 1910 at St Peter's, Thanet. Kathleen was the younger daughter of W G
Lacy of Wandsworth Common. They were living at Mortlake in 1921.
6 Francis Doherty born 6 Aug 1880 at 13 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock living with his
parents in Teddington in 1901.
7 Redmond Doherty born 14 Sep 1881 at 7 Waltham Terrace, Blackrock. He joined the
British army in 1901. It is though he emigrated to Australia in 1906 and died in 1940.
8 Maurice Dermott (Dermott) Doherty born 25 Dec 1882 at Garnaville, Stillorgan was
a furniture designer living with his parents in 1911.
9 Hugh G Doherty born 24 Mar 1884 at Garnaville, Stillorgan was in the paper trade and
married Violet Austin Sergeant on 2 Apr 1910 at Kingston and they were living at East
Molesey, Surrey in 1911.
10 Neal Gerald Doherty born 34 Apr 1886 at Garnaville, Stillorgan married Dorothy Louisa
Mary Moon and were resident at Barnes on 17 Jun 1911. Neal was an engineer working
in the motor industry. He served during WW1.
