Dalton family of Golden Hills
Edward (Ned) Dalton was living at Golden Hills in the 1850’s. He was born circa 1799. He
married Eliza Anne Gubbins the eldest daughter of William Gubbins of Ballinacurra, Co
Limerick on 19 Nov 1828. They were married by the Rev John Dalton of Abington.
Edward was one of the few present at the funeral of Sir T J Fitzgerald, Baronet and friend
who took his own life. Some thought that Sir Thomas should not be buried in the
consecrated graveyard of Ballygriffen Church and caused a disturbance. The funeral did
not go ahead until the following day and even then mourners discovered that the grave that
had been dug had been filled with stones. Ned received a letter in advance of Sir Thomas's
demise, in it T J asked that Ned's wife would explain his decision to Lady Fitzgerald.
Edward died on 19 Nov 1864 and his brother Michael Dalton also of Golden died
20 Nov 1867 aged 66. Michael was looking for his son William in 1863 and put an advert in
newspapers. William last heard of in October 1859 when he was with U S Army (1st Regiment
Cavalry at Fort Washita, Indian Territory now Bryan County, Oklahoma.)
1 John Edward Dalton, only son, took over the farm and in 1876 had 161 acres valued
at 23 Pounds. A farmer, he bred horses and was a keen fisherman. He married Kate
Mary Cuffe, daughter of Laurence Cuffe and Bedelia Byrne, at the RC Chapel of
Rathmines 7 Jan 1862. Kate's mother died in 1883 and her father had also died by
this time and they used her parent's house at 1 Alma Tce., Monkstown as their
Dublin residence. John became a JP in 1870 for the county of Tipperary and died in
August 1899. After his death, Kate put the 135 acre farm at Cappaghrattin (held in fee
simple) and the lease on the 135 acres at Ballygriffin up for sale.
1 Lillian born 13 Dec 1863 at Alma Tce, Monkstown married George Cramer Stapelton, a
solicitor and widower of Eglington Lodge on 11 Oct 1887 at St John the Baptist at Blackrock.
Lillian became step mother to Maude and Mary Stapleton, daughters of George and his
first wife Fanny Laura O'Reilly. George died 25 Dec 19 20 and Lilly died 12 Mar 1947.
1 Cecil George Dominick Stapleton born 4 Aug 1888 at Eglington Lodge, Seafield Ave,
became a solicitor and married Nora Grace Roche on 5 Jun 1918.
2 Edward Eric Stapleton born 19 Jun 1901 at Wyvern, Killiney became a stockbroker
and married Maureen Coffey 25 Feb 1932.
3 Madeline Elizabeth Lillian Stapleton born 17 Sep 1904 at Wyvern, Killiney
2 Francis E (Frank) Dalton? born Westland Row 27 Mar 1866.
3 Charles (Charley) Dalton, second son was born 3 May 1867 at Golden Hills. He attended
Clongowes Wood College in Co. Kildare and in I833 he began the study of medicine at the
Carmichael Medical School, Dublin. In 1888 he got his diploma of the Royal Colleges of
Surgeons and Physician. He was a member of the Pembroke Rowing Club and Vice President
of Monkstown RFC and a surgeon at Jervis Street Hospital. He became a Lt. Colonel in the
Royal Army Medical Corps and was wounded in 1900. He joined the Field Army in 1914 and
died 18 September 1914 in Viel Arcy, France of wounds.

5 Adelaide Dalton born at Golden Hills 11 Mar 1870, died 3 May 1871.
6 John Bertram Dalton born Golden Hills 16 Jun 1871.

John Daverin the son of Timothy Daverin on 6 Nov 1895 at Booterstown RC Church. John's family
immigrated to Cape Town in 1858 when he was just a boy. Clotilda moved to Port Elizabeth in the
Eastern Cape. John built a beautiful house called Knockfierna named after a hill near Ballingarry
in Co Limerick where he was born. John died in 1922.
