Patrick Curtis born circa 1781 was an insurance agent based at 42 Dame Street from 1813
and in 1814 secretary to the Hibernia Insurance company. By 1819 he was a stock broker
dealing in Bank and Government Stock and Debentures, and all other Public Securities.
He married Mary Frances Moore on the 20th Apr 1824 at Westmoreland Street and the
marriage was registered at St Andrew’s, Westland Row. Mary was the second daughter
of Henry Moore. They were married by the Most Rev Dr Patrick Curtis. Patrick was the
nephew of Dr Patrick Curtis, college head and Roman Catholic archbishop of Armagh
who died on 25 Jul 1832. In 1817 he put Jubilee House in Old Connaught up for rent and
in 1829 he leased Moorfield in Roebuck from Maurice Hime, he also had a town
residence at 9 Fitzwilliam Square. Patrick later a stockbroker with land at Coolmeen,
Roscommon was an agent to Sun Assurance Co in 1839. He resigned as a commissioner
of the peace in 1843 and was chairman of the Repeal Association the same year. In 1849
he was appointed to the Magistracy and in 1849 when the Encumbered Court was
established, he was appointed an official broker to the court. Patrick Curtis died
11 Apr 1856 aged 75 at his Fitzwilliam Square residence. After his death the lease and
the contents of the house was put up for sale by his sole executrix. Included in the
sale was his library and collection of 90 paintings. These included paintings by Sir Peter
Lely, Peter Paul Reubens and William Ashford. Mary Frances died at Hazelbrook,
Roscommon, the residence of her son on 7 Apr 1863 and was buried at Glasnevin with
her husband.
1 Marianne Curtis eldest daughter born 1826 married William Gernon on
20 Oct 1846 at St Andrew’s Westland Row. William was a barrister and son
of James Gernon, JP of Athcarne Castle Co Meath. In 1851 he authored a book
on insolvency with an introduction to the changes made by the New Code.
In 1858 he was appointed secretary to the Commission for Charitable
Donations & Bequests and in 1860 he was appointed High Sheriff of Drogheda.
Mary Anne died 30 May 1873 at Clyde Road and was buried at Glasnevin.

William Gernon of 53 Landsdowne Road secondly married Anne Mary Barry on
13 Dec 1874. Anne was a widow and the daughter of Timothy O’Donovan.
William died 2 Nov 1903 aged 83.
2 Catherine Hope Curtis born circa 1834 married Harward O’Farrell at the
Roman Catholic Church, Ballybrack circa August 1859. Harward was an MD and
JP of Main Street (opposite the National Bank) and in 1864 moved to Tangier,
Boyle. He was Medical Officer of the Workhouse. Howard was ill in 1870 and
required a leave of absence. Catherine died 18 Feb 1873 at Tangier, Boyle and
was buried at Asylynn. Harward died 25 Nov 1882 aged 71 at Tangier, Boyle.

Roscommon died 12 Mar 1877 at the Convent of St Leonards’s-on-Sea.

3 Thomas O’Farrell second son born circa 1867 died 18 Nov 1894 at
Lanesborough.
4 Harward Curtis O’Farrell third son joined the 7th Bengal Cavalry. He
married Edythe Grace Murray in January 1889 at St Mark’s London.
Edythe was the second daughter of Sir Hamilton Gyll Murray of The
Grange, Northend and granddaughter of Sir Hamilton Gyll of Shenly
Lodge and Salisbury Hall, Herts.
3 Frances Catherine (Fanny) Curtis third daughter married Richard Grace on
11 Mar 1854 at Fitzwilliam Square. Richard was with the 88 Connaught Rangers
and the son of the Late Sir William Grace, Bart of Boley, Queens County. The
marriage was registered at St Andrew’s Westland Row. Richard joined the 43rd
Foot and died on 21 Aug 1855 in Bangalore East Indies aged 26.

4 Anna Curtis youngest daughter married John Nolan on 25 Jan 1857 at the RC
Chapel Carrick on Shannon. John was with the 75th Regiment.
5 William Henry Curtis only son born circa 1835 was a captain in the
Roscommon Militia. He married Maria Charlotte Plunkett O’Farrell on the
22 Aug 1857 at the Roman Catholic Church, Boyle. Maria was the only
daughter of Dr Howard O’Farrell, JP. They lived at Hazelbrook near
Roscommon. Captain Curtis moved to Dublin in 1863 following the death of
his mother and the contents of Hazelbrook was put up for sale. William died
3 Jan 1886 at Mount Alto, Dalkey, his son Cyril the informant.
1 Son born March 1861 at Roscommon who survived but a few hours.
2 Cyril Curtis born circa 1862 at Roscommon. In 1885 three young
gentlemen, named William Murphy, Cyril Curtis and Robert Flynn left
Dalkey harbour in a 26’ open boat. The weather was rough and they
didn’t return. They were presumed dead but a few days later they
returned having been rescued by Captain Jones and the crew of the Bee.
