Austin Cunningham of Dunleer, a bailiff, process server and civil bill officer (fl 1877).
1 Daniel Christopher Cunningham son of Austin Cunningham of Dunleer born circa 1843, married
Mary Jane Watson (born Armagh circa 1852) on 2 Feb 1870 at Dunleer Church of Ireland Parish
Church. Daniel Christopher was working as a Parish Clerk and was residing at Tenure, Parish of
Moylary, Co Louth. Mary Jane was the daughter of James Watson, a farmer and her residence
was Dunleer Rectory at the time of her marriage. Daniel died 18 Oct 1886 aged 43 at Tenure,
Co Louth. Daniel worked as a labourer/land steward after their marriage and died at Tenure,
Co Louth on 18 Oct 1886. Mary lived at Ardee Street, Collon, Co Louth in 1901 and worked as a
dressmaker. In 1911 she was at the same address with three of her daughters but was a
housekeeper. The couple had nine children of whom eight had survived in 1911. Mary Jane
died on 3 Sep 1923 aged 71 years at Collon.
1 Elizabeth Cunningham born 30 Nov 1870 at Tenure, near Monasterboice, died
26 Apr 1871.
2 George Austin Cunningham born 26 Feb 1872 at Tenure. He enlisted in the Imperial
Yeomanry in January 1900, attesting in Windsor. He was working as a valet in Melton
Mowbray. His service number was 4843, fought in the Boar Wars and received the Cape
Colony medal and the South Africa Medal. His mother was listed as his next of kin. He
discharged himself in June 1900 giving his intended place of residence as 8 Charles,
Street, Mayfair in London.
3 Norah Kathleen Cunningham born 28 Jul 1873 at Tenure working as a dressmaker and
living with her mother at Ardee Street, Collon, Co Louth in 1901 and 1911.
4 Mary Jane Cunningham born 10 Feb 1875 at Tenure. Jane working for Ida Charlotte
Gayer, widow of Canon Gayer of Glendalough, as a domestic in Newscastle, Co Wicklow
in 1901. Jane married John Carroll at Christ Church Delgany on 3 June 1908. John was
a labourer living at Killincarrick and the son of Thomas Carroll a farmer. Their witnesses
were Margaretta Josephine Cunningham & J T McGuinness. John died at Three Street
Bridge, Delgany on 30 Apr 1913.
1 Mary Eleanor (Ellen) Carroll born 27 Mar 1909 at Three Street Bridge, Delgany.
Jane secondly married Francis Plant at Christ Church Delany 28 April 1915. Francis was
a labourer living at Charlesland, Delgany and was the son of Patrick Plant, a labourer.
Their witnesses were Mary J Plant and Michael Golden.

5 Daniel Cunningham born at Tenure, Drogheda on 2 Feb 1877. Daniel James Cunningham
married Sarah Layde at St Brigid’s Cathedral, Naas on 4 Jul 1898. Sarah Kathleen Layde
(born 29 Nov 1875 at Ballybrittas) was the daughter of Patrick Layd, a labourer of
Ballybrittas and his wife Jane Dyer. The couple both give their address as Infirmary House
and their witnesses were Harriet Plant & Thomas Pearson. Daniel James was living at
Westbury by 1900 and was working as a gardener and was an asst gardener at Westbury in
1901. In 1911 he is a gardener/labourer living in a 2 roomed house owned by Frederick
Pilkington of Westbury and only 2 of their 4 children had survived. At some point between
1902 and 1904, Sarah changed religion and no longer identified as Church of Ireland and is
noted as Church of Rome on the census of 1911. James remained Church of Ireland. James
was a herd in 1916 and the family was living at Westbury Lodge in 1931.
He was working for Samuel Jolly of Merville when he was struck by a motor lorry outside St
Margaret’s (now the Teresian School) on the Stillorgan Road while herding two cows to the
Dublin Cattle Market. James, a dairyman from Dundrum/Roebuck died at Baggot Street
Hospital the following day on 29 Jan 1937 and was buried at Deansgrange as James
Cunningham. Felim Gallagher (son in law) made the funeral arrangements. An inquest
was held by J P Brennan, the south Dublin Coroner on 30 Jan 1937, (this coroner died
shortly thereafter on 4 Feb 1937). James’ death record was changed by his brother (James)
to give his proper name as being Daniel James Cunningham but this is not reflected by either
the headstone or register at Deansgrange. James and his family were living at Corca
Duibhne in Roebuck at the time of his death. Sarah of Queen’s County died 12 Apr 1962 at
St Patrick’s House, run by the Little Sisters of the Poor at Kilmainham and was buried with
her husband at Deansgrange.
1 Daniel George (George) Cunningham born (to Daniel James) 14 Oct 1898 at
Stillorgan baptised at Stillorgan Parish Church. George D Cunningham died at
Westbury on 1 Feb 1903 aged 4 and was buried at Deansgrange.
2 Jane Elizabeth (Jeannie) Cunningham born 17 Nov 1899 was baptised in Stillorgan
Parish Church in February 1900. Jane was living at Westbury Lodge when she
married Felix Gallagher at St Mary’s RC Church on Haddington Road on 18 Jul 1931
Felix, a labourer was living at 42 Mespil Road, Dublin and was the son of Michael
Gallagher, a farmer. Jane’s sister Eveline was a witness of the marriage.
3 Margaret Kathleen Cunningham born (to Daniel James) 21 Feb 1902 was baptised
at Stillorgan Parish Church. Margaret died from croup at Westbury, Stillorgan
26 Nov 1907 and was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Annie Cunningham* born 12 Sep 1905 fourth child was the first of the children to
be christened in the Roman Catholic Church of St Laurence's, Kilmacud in October
1905. Annie married Patrick Thomas on 13 Oct 1926 at RC Church in Ballsbridge.
Patrick was a bus conductor and the son of James Thomas, a tram inspector.
5 Sarah Eveline Cunningham born 1 Jan 1913 at Westbury, Stillorgan was a witness at
her sister’s wedding in 1931. Sarah married Thomas Sweeney, a fireman at SS
Michael & John, Dublin on 25 Nov 1941. Thomas was residing at Iveagh House and
was the son of Patrick Sweeney, a carpenter. Sarah was living at 25 South William
Street. Witness: Anne Lovatt and George J Wisely.
6 Nora Veronica Cunningham born 17 May 1916 at Westbury, Stillorgan married
Christopher Byrne on 14 Oct 1939 at Holy Cross RC Church, Dundrum. Her sister
Jennie Gallagher a witness as was Thomas Fitzsimons. Christopher was a labourer
residing at Belveue (sic), Windy Arbour and the son of Michael Byrne a dairy
proprietor. Nora was a despatch clerk living at Roebuck, Dundrum.
6 Margaret Cunningham born 13 Jan 1879 at Tenure, Co Louth working for Ida Charlotte Gayer
as a domestic in Newcastle, Co Wicklow in 1901. Margaretta was a domestic servant working
for the Fitzgerald family of Kilkea Castle, Mageney, Co Kildare. Margaretta Josephine married
Alexander Eustace Morrison at Mageney Church of Ireland on 11 Apr 1917. Alexander was a
nurseryman and the son of John Morrison a land steward. Their witnesses were James Roger
and Hanna E Jenkins. Margaret died 17 Aug 1935 at Kilkea, Mageney and Alexander died
25 Apr 1968 at St Vincent’s Athy late of Kilkea.
1 Margaretta Jane Morrison born 17 Apr 1920 at Dollarstown Nursery.
7 Sarah Anne Cunningham born circa 1881 in County Louth living with her mother at Ardee
Street, Collon in 1901 and working as a nurse. Sarah was the informant of the death of
her mother in 1923.
8 Elizabeth Christina Cunningham born 23 Jan 1883 at Tenure, Co Louth. Working as a
dressmaker and living with her mother at Ardee Street, Collon in 1901 and 1911.
9 Esther Eleanor (Hester Elena) Cunningham born 27 Jul 1885 at Tenure, Co Louth working as
a dressmaker and living with her mother at Ardee Street, Collon in 1901 and 1911.
