John Crosthwaite born 29 Sep 1745 son of John Crosthwaite and Mary Crawley of Athy, Co
Kildare. He married Elizabeth Reynolds in 1769. He was a watch and clock maker based in
Dame Street and was working from 27 Grafton Street (at the King’s Arms) by 1776 trading
as J Crosthwaite. He experimented with 'the pendulum supported by knife-edges on
diamond plates' and published his findings in 1788 and 1800. He was a watch maker to
the Board of Works in 1795 and his plain pocket watches would have sold for around 50
guineas (without chain, fob or seal). His son John, who was his apprentice, was brought
into the business as a partner in 1795 and the business traded as John Crosthwaite & Son.
They made astronomical, musical, steeple clocks and longitude watches for long voyages
all to John’s 'own invention with the latest improvements' and by 1796 they had the Royal
seal of approval.
By 1802 he was in partnership with Frederick Hodges of 138, Capel Street and they moved
the retail shop to No 26 Grafton Street in October that year and traded as Crosthwaite &
Hodges. He bought property around Grafton Street the city which he rented out. He also
bought property in the Vergemount area which he sold in plots for houses to be built. John
died on 30 Jan 1829 at Virgemount in his 84th year. Notable clocks made by Crosthwaite
include a double dial clock in St Columba’s College Rathfarnham, and the Astronomical
Clock at Armagh Observatory.

died circa 1803.
2 Charles Crosthwaite born circa 1770 was a linen and muslin merchant of 21
Merchant’s Quay. He was resident at Grafton Street and married Elizabeth Clarke
of St Werburgh's Parish on 8 Sep 1796. Elizabeth died at Virgemount aged 40 in
1821 and was buried at Donnybrook. Charles died circa 1850.
1 John Clarke Crosthwaite born 11 May 1799 graduated Trinity MA. He took
Holy orders and was ordained Deacon in 1827, and Priest in 1830. He was
resident at Mount Pleasant & Vergemount when he married Elizabeth
Hawkes Todd on 2 Jul 1833 at St Peter’s Church. Elizabeth was the daughter
of Surgeon Charles Hawkes Todd of Mount Street. In 1836 he published a
hymn ‘Praise the Lord, oh my Soul, he was a skilled musician and helped the
11 year Robert Prescott Stewart with his early compositions. That same year
he was Precentor’s Vicar in Christ Church and was collated to the Vicarage of
Doneny and Rectory of Lackagh, in the diocese of Kildare. He was the author
of ‘Modern hagiology: an examination of the nature and tendency of some
legendary and devotional works published under the sanction of the Rev J H
Newman the Rev Dr Pusey’. In 1844 he was appointed Rector of St Mary-at-Hill
and later chaplain St Andrew's, Hubbart, London. Some of his property was for
sale through the Encumbered Court in 1854, this included his house at Cold
Blow Lane and further property was for sale in 1856. John died 29 Jun 1874 at
Tharp Lodge, Hornchurch and Elizabeth died 24 Apr 1878 aged 71 at Tharp
Lodge, Hornchurch.

2 Charles Hawkes Todd Crosthwaite born December 1835 married Sarah
Graham in Bengal, India on 5 Jun 1863. Sarah was the daughter of
William Graham. He was knighted. Charles was Chief Commissioner of
Burma and died on 28 May 1915 at Shamley Green, Surrey and left 12K
in personal estate.
3 Robert Joseph Costhwaite born 17 Jan 1841 at Virgemount. He was the
Judicial Commissioner of Burmah and of Central Provinces and was
knighted. He died in 1917.
4 Alice Crosthwaite born circa 1848 in London.
2 Mary Crosthwaite eldest daughter married Rev Alexander M’Caul of Abbey Street
at St Peter’s Church in April 1823.
1 John Clarke Crosthwaite McCaul married Elizabeth Fanny Curteis at St
Pancras on 12 Jun 1856. Elizabeth was the only child of John Curteis of
Tavistock Square.
3 Charles Crosthwaite ran a boarding school at Vergemouont with his brother John
from 1822 to 1826. He was ordained a priest in 1830 and was appointed vicar
general of Kildare in 1845. He died 20 Jan 1892 at 8 St James’ Terrace, Clonskeagh.
1 Charles Allan Crosthwaite took Holy orders and married Susan Mary Ryan
on 1 Jul 1885 at Donamore near Gorey. Charles was resident in Clonskeagh
and Susan was the daughter of William Ryan, a farmer of Cahore. The lived
at Granite Lodge in Kingstown and later in Kildare.

4 Henry Crosthwaite died after a fall from his horse on 29 Jul 1832 at Vergemount.
5 Louise Crosthwaite born circa 1812 died 7 Sep 1820 and was buried at Donnybrook
with her mother.
