The Crawford Family of Mount Merrion
Hugh Crawford, gardener/land steward living at Chief Stewards Lodge, Mount Merrion Gardens.
This lodge is still extant and is on Trees Road. He was born at Farlie, Ayshire in Scotland, the son
of Hugh and Ann Crawford.
The family were Presbyterian and Hugh worked for the Green family at Kilcronagh in
Co Kilkenny from 1881 to 1889 before moving to Dublin. He joined the RHS and was elected a
member of council in 1894. In 1908 his horse, while in the charge of James Kealy, took fright and
charged through the window of Gibneys in South Great Georges Street. Thankfully there were
no serious casualties.

1 Hugh Morris Crawford born 7 Oct 1881 at Greenville in Co Kilkenny was living in
one of the Pembroke estate cottages working as a gardener in 1911. Hugh died
a bachelor on 25 Jun 1958 at Roebuck Castle where he worked as a gardener.
2 Robert James Crawford born 4 Apr 1883 at Greenville in Co Kilkenny .
3 Herbert William Crawford born 22 Feb 1885 at Kilcronagh, Co Kilkenny
became a commercial traveller and married Elizabeth Constance Woods
at SS Philip & James on 3 Nov 1915.
4 Frederick Hugh (Fred) Crawford born 8 Nov 1886 at Greenvale in Co Kilkenny.
5 Ernest John Crawford born 26 Mar 1889 at Kilcronagh in Co Kilkenny. He immigrated to
Canada in 1911 and enlisted in 1915 at Victoria, British Columbia, in 1915. He was
wounded three times in three years. He married Helemi Nygard a native of Finland at
Vancouver on 15 Mar 1930. He re-joined the 7th Battalion in September 1918
and died in Vancouver on 18 Jan 1953.
6 Arthur Sidney Crawford born 28 Mar 1894 at Mount Merrion, Roebuck, County Dublin,
was an apprentice cabinet maker. He enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Belfast in
Nov 1914. This was absorbed into the 9th Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Private
Crawford was killed in action between 21 and 28 March 1918 during the retreat from
St Quentin in the German ‘Kaiserschlacht’ offensive. Having no known grave, he is
commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial at the Somme in France.
Jane died from Bright's disease on 1 Feb 1910 at the Adelaide Hospital. Hugh secondly married
Blanche J Putland from England at Croyden, Surrey in 1911. Hugh died age 64 on 17 June 1916 at
Mount Merrion.
