James Cox son of Eliza and Rev William Cox, rector of Kildare and a Canon of the Cathedral born
circa 1820. He went to Tirhoot in India in the late 1830’s to work for an uncle know as ‘Paddy’
Medlicot. He was also known as ‘Paddy’ and became a very successful Indigo and sugar planter
running various factories. His younger brother Frederick returned to Ireland in 1860 for his
health, but died on the passage home. James returned to Ireland in 1861 and lived at The Priory
Stillorgan from 1868 to 1872. He married Charlotte Margaret Adamson on 21 June 1870 at St
George’s Church, Dublin. Charlotte was the daughter of Richard Adamson of River Park, Co
Westmeath. They travelled the same day from Kingstown to Holyhead on honeymoon. They
moved to Connellmore House near Newbridge and John had an Australian pink and grey
Cockatoo. John disposed of his interest in Connelmore House in 1885 and the household
furniture etc was put up for sale. He purchased Thirlestaine Hall, Thirlestaine Road, Cheltenham
in late 1895.
Eliza Wilson and Jane Robinson, servants both from Ireland travelled with the family. John died
at Thirlestane Hall on 7 Aug 1892 and was buried at Leckhampton and a marble Celtic cross was
erected on the grave in his memory. Charlotte and her children travelled extensive around
Europe for the next few years spending months at a time in San Remo on the Italian Riviera. They
used the grounds of their house for fetes and bazaars for various charitable events. Charlotte’s
only brother George A G Adamson died in Westmeath in 1900 leaving her the only surviving
member of the the Adamson family. Eliza Wilson and Jane Robinson who had nursed all of the
children died on the same day in October 1902 and were buried in Cheltenham in a double grave.
Charlotte and her children were the chief mourners. She sold Thirlestaine Hall in 1909 for 30K
and moved to a house on the Old Bath Road and called it Connell more. Charlotte died on
3 Feb 1929 her funeral service was held at St Luke’s Cheltenham and she was buried at
Leckhampton graveyard. She was survived by her four children and seven grandchildren.
1 Elizabeth Graham (Elsie) Cox eldest daughter born at Connellmore, Co Kildare on
15 Oct 1873 married Lyall Palmer Jackson on 18 Aug 1903 at St Luke’s Church,
Cheltenham. Lyall was the only child of George Maver Jackson, JP of Sandford Lodge,
Cheltenham.
2 George Lindsay Cox born 30 Apr 1876 at Connellmore House, Newbridge attended
Merton College, Oxford. He married widow Ada Gwendoline Burton on 9 Oct 1936 at St
Luke’s Church. Lindsay died 6 Jul 1952 and left 49K in personal estate.
3 Ethel Mary Cox born 5 Aug 1877 at Connellmore, Co Kildare died a spinster on
25 Aug 1953 and was buried at Leckhampton with her parents.
4 Mabel Charlotte Cox born 7 Apr 1881 at Connellmore House, Co Kildare married Rev E
Godfrey Burr, Vicar of Rushall in September 1906 at St Luke’s, Cheltenham. Godfrey was
offered the Bishopric of Antigua in 1910 but declined as he did not wish to put his twin
boys at risk. Godfrey died 4 Jan 1952 and Mabel died 26 Aug 1958, both were buried at
Leckhampton with Mabel’s parents.
