Edward Torton Corcoran, of Booterstown Avenue married Catharine Casey,
daughter of Andrew Casey on 18 Jun 1844 at St Nicholas. Edward was a corn
merchant living at Arbutus Lodge with offices at 2 Lower Gardiner Street and
116 Great Britain Street. They moved to Parson’s Green, Kilmacud in 1852 and
changed the name of the house to St Margaret’s. Edward died at his residence,
on 17 Apr 1856 and was interred in the Pro Cathedral. Catherine died on
10 Nov 1893 at 19 Raglan Road (now the Mexican Embassy) and was interred in
the Pro Cathedral. She left over 9K in person estate.
The two youngest girls Emily and Kathleen knocked 5 years off their age on the
1901 census but by 1901 they had knocked 20 years off their ages.
1 Mary Catherine (Mary Kate) Corcoran born Apr 1845 at Arbutus Lodge
baptised at Booterstown Church on 13 Apr 1845 married Michael Brett of
Glendalough House, Adelaide Road, Kingstown and son of Jacob and Bridget
Brett on 17 Jul 1882 at St Mary's Church on Haddington Road.
2 Daniel Edward Corcoran born October 1846 at Arbutus Lodge baptised at
Booterstown Church on 29 Oct 1846 married Elizabeth (Lizzy) Downes,
daughter of Thomas Downes, a Miller from Maryboro at Maryborough
Church, Mountmellick on 8 Sep 1875. Daniel was a surgical Instrument
maker trading as McAdams and Corcoran at Bachelors Walk in 1879 and
as D E Corcoran from 1880. He was also the only manufacturer of artificial
legs in Ireland. He moved to 124 Stephen's Green beside the College of
Surgeons in 1885 and starting winning tenders for various Unions around the
country including Sligo and Wexford but by 1896 he had moved his business
to Frederick Street and was living at Lombard Street West in 1896.
He died 15 May 1896 at 3 South Frederick Street. There was an inquest into
his death as prussic acid was found at the scene. The inquest found that the
acid was purchased to put down his dog and that Daniel died of natural
causes although some newspapers mis-reported it as suicide. *
3 Isabella Catherine Corcoran second daughter born 2 Sep 1848 at Arbutus
Lodge baptised at Booterstown Church on 10 Sep 1848. Isabella died at
the residence of her uncle John Casey on 1 Jan 1895 at 19 Raglan Road
leaving 3K in personal estate. She was interred at the Pro Cathedral.
4 Emily Mary Corcoran born August 1850 at Arbutus Lodge, Booterstown
baptised at Booterstown Church on 15 Aug 1850 was living at Raglan Road
in 1909. She died 28 Mar 1831 and was interred in the Pro Cathedral.
5 Catherine Monica (Kathleen) Corcoran youngest daughter born at Parson’s
Green, Kilmacud was baptised at Booterstown 30 Aug 1852 was the
executor of John Casey’s will who let 52K in personal estate in 1909 most of
which was left to her and Emily. She married John Davys, Medical
Practitioner of 26 Westland Row and eldest son of the late Dr Francis Davys,
Coroner for Dublin, at St Kevin’s Church Haddington Road on 22 Oct 1914.
Kathleen, late of the Royal Hibernian Hotel died 25 Aug 1927 at Llandudno
and was interred in the Pro Cathedral. She left 15K in personal estate.
* Edward Joseph Mallins son of James Thomas Mallins and Margaret Alice
Casey was the cousin of Daniel and appeared at the coroner's court.
