Richard Colgan born circa 1811. He was a cabinet maker of Carrick-on-Suir and married
Letitia McHenry circa 1838. Richard died 21 May 1888 at Balally Lane, Carrick-on-Suir.
Letitia was living in Coolballintaggart, Co Wicklow in 1901 and her son was visiting her
on the night of the census. Letitia died 9 Oct 1905 at Coolballintaggart Lodge.
1 Henry Coghlan baptised 22.05.1839 at Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary was living
at Palmerston Park in 1884. Henry and Marion Elizabeth Rawlins were married
by the Registrar on 3 Oct 1892. Henry was Roman Catholic and Marion was
Church of England. This marriage was solemnized at Monkstown Parish Church
on 18 Jan 1893. Henry was an architects officer at the Board of Works and was
resident at Rosario, Temple Gardens, Rathmines. Marion, born in Hampshire
in 1862 lived with grandfather and was resident at the Anglesea Arms Hotel in
Kingstown. She was the only daughter of Charles Mercer Rawlins and his first
wife Mary Elizabeth Clarkson. Henry had 250 acres at Coolballintagart near
Aughrim in Co Wicklow which he leased out. They lived at Caerlyon House in
Killiney and they were living at Rockford House by 1910 and two of their four
children had survived. They were still there in 1918 and by 1921 they were at
Ardmore. Henry died on 9 Jan 1924 at Ardmore House and was buried with his
sister in Deansgrange. Marion died age 95 on 20 Jan 1958 at Dunkerron,
Adelaide Road, Glenageary, her son Brian the informant. She was buried at
Deansgrange.
1 Kathleen Annie Colgan born 25 Oct 1893 at Rosario, Temple Gardens had
died by 1911.
2 Herbert Henry Coghlan born 4 Sep 1895 at Rosario, Temple Gardens,
Rathmines. He was a chartered mechanical engineer and worked in Dublin
railway workshops. In the 1920s he joined the Burmese railways. He married
Margaret Kathleen Frances Anderson on 1 Oct 1923 at the Cathedral,
Rangoon, Bengal. Margaret was the daughter of the late George Rae
Anderson, metal broker of West Ho, Hoylake, Cheshire. They moved to
England in 1926. From the 1930s he worked for a firm of consulting engineers
on a contract for the Indian State Railways and spent much time in Germany.
He lived at Westbrook, Chieveley, Boxford, near Newbury from 1939. He had
an interest in archaeology and metallurgy and published numerous papers on
the subjects. He was honorary curator of Newbury Museum from 1946 to 1977.
Margaret died 7 Dec 1979 at Newbury and Herbert died at Newbury on
27 Jun 1981 and left 212K in personal estate.
3 Brian Coghlan born 12 May 1902 at Elm Hurst, Temple Gardens, Rathmines.
He was an architect and Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
His design for a village community centre won first prize in 1944. He was also
an engraver and painter who exhibited in the RHA and in 1951 the Waterford
Municipal Art Gallery (now the Waterford Gallery of Art) purchased one of his
etchings. He lived at Dunkerron, Glenageary from 1939 to 1958. He moved to
England after the death of his mother to live close to his brother Herbert. Brian
died on 7 Aug 1978 at Speen, Newbury, Berkshire and left 105K in personal
estate. Probate to his brother Herbert.
2 Margaret Coghlan baptised 30.08.1843 died a spinster at Ardmore, Stillorgan Road
on 10 Jun 1922. Her nephew Herbert H Coghlan the informant. She was buried at
Deansgrange.
