The Cave Family of Stillorgan Rectory
Henry Carr Cave born circa 1848, son of Stephen Cave Merchant, married Jane Keightley Hicks,
daughter of Charles Hicks at Holy Trinity Church Cork on 9 Jul 1874. Henry was an accountant
and secretary of The Cork Savings Bank (taken over by TSB and closed in 2012). Henry died
16 Sep 1929 aged 81 at Savings Bank House, Parnell Place, Cork. Jane died 3 Dec 1936 at
Skibbereen aged 93.
1 Henry Charles Cave born 8 Jan 1877 at 9 Anglesea Street, Cork. He attended Trinity,
received his BA in 1902 and MA in 1905. He took Holy orders and was ordained in
1903 and was curate of Harold's Cross from 1903 to 1912. He married Dorothea Guerin,
daughter of Frederick Ledger Guerin, an accountant, at Harold’s Cross Church on
10 Jun 1908. From 1912 to 1917 he was Rector of Clondalkin before moving to
Drumcondra and North Strand. In 1926 he was transferred to the United Parishes of
Malahide, Portmarnock and St Doulagh's. He was Hon Sec of the Hibernian Church
Missionary Society & The Protestant Orphan Society.
He was Rector of Stillorgan from 1943 to 1947. During this time he was Domestic
Chaplin to the Bishop of Limerick and was made a Canon of Christchurch Cathedral. He
died at the rectory on 10 Feb 1947 and Dorothy died 20 Dec 1959, both were buried at
Stillorgan graveyard. A brass plaque at St Brigid’s Church, Stillorgan was dedicated in his
memory.
1 Sylvia Dorothea Cave born 20 Dec 1909 at 16 Garville Avenue, Rathgar married
Kenneth MacKenzie, a surgeon and son of the Rev Roderick Bain MacKenzie on
3 Jun 1930 at St Andrew’s Church, Malahide.
2 Henry Francis Carr Cave only son born at 89 Lower Baggot Street, a nursing home
on 13 Feb 1917. He joined The Royal Regiment Of Artillery and married Irene Jones,
daughter of Mr E Jones of 12 Cromwell Road, Penwortham, Lancashire at the
Garrison Church, Clarence Barracks, Portsmouth in 1940. He was serving in
Germany when his father died.
2 William Francis Carr Cave born 20 Jul 1878 at Anglesea Place Cork, succeeded his father as
secretary of the Cork Savings Bank. He died 6 Feb 1953 at Cork.
3 John Keightley Cave born 22 Dec 1880 at Anglesea Street died 12 Jul 1889.
4 Arthur Meagher Cave born 13 Apr 1883 at Arbutus Lodge Cork. Arthur took Holy orders
and married Eve Eleanor Healy at Kells on 24 Aug 1911.
